A solid batting performance from the Indian Under-19 team, with three players making half-centuries, took them to 311 for 6 at the end of the first day of the opening Test against their English counterparts at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
After choosing to bat first, the Indian colts were given a rapid start by Robin Uthappa, who raced to 59 in 54 balls with the help of 11 fours, and took the score to 95 within the first 15 overs. Shikhar Dhawan, the other opener, was relatively sedate and held the innings together along with Ambati Rayudu, the captain. Dhawan, who starred in the Under-19 World Cup in Dhaka last year, took 112 balls for his 69 before he was stumped off Mark Lawson, the legspinner from Yorkshire.
Faiz Fazal and Mayank Tehlan, who is Virender Sehwag's cousin and reputed to have a similar attitude to batting, fell cheaply, but Rayudu and Manoj Tiwari shared a valuable 65-run stand. Both fell as stumps approached and England clawed back into the contest. Andrew Miller was the most successful bowler with 2 for 62 while Ben Harmison, Steve's brother, finished with 0 for 26 from his nine overs.
