Quinton de Kock's 135, the highest one-day score by a South African against India, all but blew the tourists off the park. His opening stand of 152 with Amla was the team's first century partnership for the first wicket in 68 games. It helped South Africa to 358 for four, their second-highest total against India, after 365 for two at Ahmedabad in February 2010. The rest of the job was done first in a stand of 105 off 46 balls between de Villiers and Duminy, then by McLaren and Steyn, who shared six wickets. India slipped to 65 for four in reply, but Dhoni was dropped on 18, and made the most of the reprieve by staying until the 41st over, when Steyn bowled him for 65; Kohli, dropped on two, was the only other Indian batsman to pass 30. Without a warm-up match to prepare for the series, India were plainly out of touch, and went down to their second-heaviest defeat by South Africa in the format. South Africa, still under the cloud of their first one-day series loss to Pakistan - at home, no less - needed an emphatic performance. This was it.
