At R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, August 6, 2005 (day/night). West Indies won by 33 runs. West Indies 5 pts, Sri Lanka 1 pt. Toss: West Indies.
Sri Lanka's first defeat in ten one-day internationals at home, stretching back just over a year, was inflicted by gradually improving opponents. West Indies protected their modest total with some disciplined bowling, especially by Daren Powell and off-spinner Banks, in his first match of the series. There were also some imaginative tactics by Joseph, who took over the captaincy after a viral infection kept Chanderpaul indoors when Sri Lanka batted. Opening for the first time in the series, Chanderpaul had earlier scored a laboured but important 57. Daren Powell's opening spell of seven overs for 14 runs and Sangakkara's wicket put early pressure on Sri Lanka, then wickets from successive balls by Smith and two more in quick succession for Banks made sure.
Man of the Match: O. A. C. Banks.
