The lucky/unlucky error
In the fourth over of Kings XI Punjab's innings, Manan Vohra attempted an upper cut against Morne Morkel. He swayed out of the line and arched his back but failed to time the shot as well as he would have liked. The ball lobbed to Piyush Chawla at third man, on the bounce, much to Morkel's frustration. Chawla's throw, coming out of the low floodlights of Mohali, took Robin Uthappa by surprise, and he fumbled the collection to concede an overthrow that brought Vohra back on strike.
The next ball, Morkel made sure Vohra didn't get another chance. He banged one in on a good length and Vohra flicked it uppishly and straight to Shakib Al Hasan at square leg.
The external protective assistance
Sunil Narine took his first wicket of the season when he had Wriddhiman Saha caught behind in the 11th over. However, replays suggested Uthappa may have inadvertently lobbed the ball onto his helmet while completing the catch.
Law 32.3, regarding the validity of a catch, reads: "It is not a fair catch if at any time after having been struck by the bat and before a catch is completed, the ball has touched a protective helmet worn by a fielder." Replays weren't conclusive, but the third umpire should probably have been consulted.
The captain's exasperation
Kings XI were 120 for 8 in 19 overs when Andre Russell came on for his first over. He leaked 15 off the first five balls, but Gautam Gambhir still kept his composure. That changed when Kyle Abbott drove the last ball to long-on. What should have been one turned into two as Suryakumar Yadav fumbled. What should have been two turned into three as his throw ricocheted off the stumps at the bowler's end. Gambhir soon left the field. Fuming.
The switch-end rejection
At the start of the game, Morne Morkel marked his guard to bowl to an in-form M Vijay. Just when Morkel was ready, Gambhir asked him to change ends. Off went the bowler to the other side. The umpires intervened, though, rejecting Gambhir's wish. Back went Morkel.
