At P. Saravanamuttu Stadium, Colombo, July 20, 2007. Sri Lanka won by 70 runs. Toss: Bangladesh.
Heavy showers in the lead-up ensured seamer-friendly conditions, and Bangladesh capitalised
on this with a disciplined display from Mashrafe bin Mortaza and Syed Rasel. Only eight runs
were scored in the third powerplay (bowled by Rasel and Abdur Razzak) as Sri Lanka stuttered
to 68 for three from 20 overs. But the fielders could not back up their quick bowlers' fine efforts,
dropping early catches off Tharanga, Sangakkara and Jayawardene, and Sri Lanka clawed their
way back into the game thanks to an 83-run stand between Tharanga and Silva. A modest target
of 235 gave Bangladesh a chance of an upset, which looked even better as the openers put on 45
in 11 overs. However, Fernando started a slump of five wickets for 11 in 28 balls, and Sri Lanka
closed down the game.
Man of the Match: C. R. D. Fernando.
