Sri Lanka v West Indies, 2011

Wisden's review of the third ODI, Sri Lanka v West Indies, 2011

15-Apr-2012
At Colombo (SSC), February 6, 2011. Sri Lanka won by 26 runs. Toss: West Indies.
Sri Lanka rested three key bowlers - Malinga, Muralitharan and Kulasekara - but still came out on top to secure a 2-0 series victory. Set 278, West Indies lost Gayle first ball and Barath, also for a duck, next over, only to recover through a 125-run partnership between Darren Bravo, who batted attractively during a 91-ball stay, and Sarwan. But Herath trapped Sarwan, and Chanderpaul followed soon after. West Indies began to fall behind the required rate, and Mendis's spell of three for eight in 11 balls during the batting powerplay settled the matter. Earlier, Sri Lanka built a competitive total around Sangakkara's well-paced 75 in 105 deliveries after West Indies had opted to bowl first on the pitch used for all three games. He added 95 for the third wicket with Jayawardene after Tharanga and Dilshan had opened with a stand of 54 in eight overs. A mid-innings slump of six for 57 removed some gloss, but a 22-ball 36 from Mathews reapplied it before Sri Lanka's weakened attack completed the job.
Man of Match: K. C. Sangakkara. Man of the Series: W. U. Tharanga.
