West Indies v New Zealand
At St Vincent, June 16
15-Apr-2003
At St Vincent, June 16. West Indies won by four wickets. Toss: New Zealand.
West Indies clinched the series off the last ball amid confusion and controversy. They needed
15 off the final over, which had to be bowled by Tuffey after a scoring muddle misled Fleming
into believing his preferred choice, Hitchcock, had not been bowled out. Tuffey's first two balls
yielded a single and a bye; then Chanderpaul, just back from hospital after an X-ray on his arm,
which had been struck by Bond, hit three fours and the winning single, which would have reached
the boundary too but for the charge of the celebrating crowd. Fleming and Nevin had set New
Zealand on the way to their second-highest total against West Indies, adding 89 - including 26
in one over from Collins. Then McMillan and Vincent maintained the momentum with 139 in 22
overs. Gayle, who claimed four wickets, launched West Indies' reply with another half-century;
the middle order kept them on course until Chanderpaul provided the breathtaking finish.
