Warner made his first century of the tour, while Shaun Marsh gave a reminder of his credentials in case Chris Rogers - still troubled by inner-ear problems after his dizziness at Lord's - did not recover. Both openers retired after reaching 101, though none of the later batsmen made a compelling case for inclusion in the Third Test. Clarke, not in fear of losing his place but in need of runs, had made 16 when he became a memorable maiden first-class victim for 19-year-old seamer Will Davis, who finished with three for 63. Both teams rested left-arm spearheads: the Australians left out two Mitchells, Johnson and Starc (as well as the right-armer, Josh Hazlewood), while at England's request Derbyshire omitted the incisive Mark Footitt. Cummins, called up when injury forced Ryan Harris into retirement, claimed a wicket two years after his previous first-class match, though Mitchell Marsh grabbed four. In what turned out to be his last first-class game, Haddin relinquished the gloves to Nevill. After two sessions of the second day were lost to rain, Derbyshire slipped to 129 for seven on the last, but were rescued by Palladino's belligerent 82. There was time for Clarke to tiptoe towards fluency.
