South Africa v Australia, 2016-17

Wisden's review of the second ODI, South Africa v Australia, 2016-17

15-Apr-2017
At Johannesburg, October 2, 2016. South Africa won by 142 runs. Toss: Australia. One-day international debuts: J. M. Mennie, C. P. Tremain.
South Africa bullied the bowling on a flat, fast pitch to set up their second-biggest victory over Australia by runs; they had won by 196 at Cape Town in March 2006. Du Plessis's sixth ODI hundred provided the bulk of their 361, while the tourists' inexperienced seamers bore the brunt of the assault: Joe Mennie conceded 82, the most by an Australian on debut, and Chris Tremain 78, which equalled the old record (held by Steve Smith). The in-form Rossouw, retained as opener despite Hashim Amla's availability, relentlessly pierced the off side until departing in the 25th over.
Then, du Plessis and Duminy, who required only 58 balls for his 82, combined power and placement to put on 150 at more than eight an over. Australia needed a similar partnership to get close, but the biggest they managed was 69 for the sixth wicket, and by then they were out of it. Despite the efforts of Head - who scored his first international half-century - wickets fell too frequently. Australia hit six sixes to South Africa's four, but 142 fewer runs.
