In a match of twists and turns - almost a mini-Test - Sri Lanka eventually triumphed, sentencing Australia to an early exit after two defeats: not the Ashes build-up they had envisaged. Sangakkara took the match award for a well-paced 55, but the main destroyer was Mendis, whose spin variations the Australians were encountering for the first time. In his opening over he bowled a nervous-looking Ponting, who had been orchestrating a recovery after the first-over dismissal of Warner. Next over Mendis trapped Watson, who missed a sweep; he returned to deceive Michael Hussey just after his brother David, back at his old home ground, had tonked him for six. From 94 for six off 14.5 overs, the Australians batted resiliently to hit 65 from 31 balls. Johnson spoiled Muralitharan's figures - 21 came from his last over, including two slog-swept sixes. After Jayasuriya's quick departure to Warner's backward-leaping catch, Dilshan improvised well, reaching 50 in 26 balls by flicking the ball over his shoulder for four, as if tossing a pancake: it soon became his signature shot. A late wobble was overcome by Sangakkara, who hit two sixes in Hauritz's final over, and finally by Mubarak, who tucked into an obliging length and wafted Lee for two huge sixes. The end came when the first ball of the last over, bowled by Johnson, was a leg-side wide.
