A virtual quarter-final - the winner progressed to the semis, the loser went out - was again decided by Sri Lanka's spinners, who derailed a promising run-chase. Mendis deceived Taylor and Styris (two of several New Zealanders carrying niggling injuries) in his second over to start a collapse in which eight wickets tumbled for 46. New Zealand had started well enough, Redmond spanking most of the 20 which came from the second over, bowled by Jayasuriya (who was earlier out first ball), but he spooned Malinga's slower ball to midwicket in the fifth over. After that, only the lanky Guptill survived for long. Sri Lanka had also struggled a little on the slow pitch, only just exceeding the average Trent Bridge tournament total of 155, despite another sparkling display from Dilshan, who brought up the fifty with three fine fours in a Mills over, and a patient run-a- ball knock from Sangakkara. Vettori, feeling his shoulder injury, overstepped in his third over: Jayawardene stroked the resultant free hit back for a huge straight six, and in the final over he reverse-swept Oram for four using the back of the bat.
