New Zealand in West Indies 2013-14 June 29, 2014

Gayle rested for T20s against New Zealand

ESPNcricinfo staff

West Indies opener Chris Gayle has been rested from the two Twenty20 internationals against New Zealand in Dominica, while allrounder Dwayne Bravo remains unavailable due to injury. Allrounder Kieron Pollard, who has not played internationals since July 2013 because of a knee injury but has played domestic cricket since, is set to make a comeback.

Bowling allrounder Christopher Barnwell, and batsman Darren Bravo are the new inclusions in the 13-man squad. The three missing from the group that travelled to Bangladesh for the 2014 World T20 are allrounder Marlon Samuels, fast bowler Ravi Rampaul and opener Johnson Charles.

Samuels had scored only 86 runs in five innings during the World T20 and was also dropped from West Indies' Test squad after making a pair in the first match against New Zealand in Jamaica. Neither Rampaul nor Charles played a game during the tournament in Bangladesh. Dwayne Bravo has been sidelined ever since he hurt his shoulder during the IPL in April.

The T20 matches will be played at Windsor Park on July 5 and 6.

Squad: Darren Sammy (capt), Samuel Badree, Christopher Barnwell, Darren Bravo, Sheldon Cottrell, Andre Fletcher, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Andre Russell, Krishmar Santokie, Lendl Simmons, Dwayne Smith

Without Gayle, West Indies' batting order is flop.

The only thing that is missing in this team is some speed, I know that Cottrell is there but he is on proven and Santokie is slow/medium pace. I would have like to see a Rampaul, Roach, Taylor or even Edwards.

It looks a balanced side , the West Indies selectors should see that the young and energetic team is required in keeping view of fortcoming world cup

Leave Blackwood alone and let him build his appetite for long innings in test cricket. West Indies need to build test batsmen or we will never advance our poor ranking.

Hopefully this means that WI are finally looking beyond Gayle but they should have done that for the tests and played him in the T20s which is all that he is suitable for now. The inclusion of Russell is absolutely amazing! The bowler with the worst bowling figures in world T20 and the one who cost WI a place in the latter stages of the world cup (though it was Sammy's folly in bowling him) gets a place ahead of someone like Carlos Brathwaite or a genuine fast bowler. Once again they seem to be playing names as against the best players available. And why two keepers. Ramdin is surplus. Should have included another batsman. Having humiliatingly lost the test series, to lose the T20 series too would add gloom on top of gloom. Let's hope Sammy and the other senior players can rouse them to do something special.

I really just don't understand how these things get done at the WICB. Gayle is a way better player in the T20's at his age than he is in Test matches. If Gayle needed rest because he recently had an injury that needed attention in Germany then he should have been left out of the test team. That would have given him enough resting time so that he could be ready for the T20's. As a cricket fan and an addict to WI cricket I will keep staying up all night to watch them play if i have to, but the selectors and that WICB awa. My vote is that of no confidence.

Can't understand the logic behind resting Gayle. At this juncture in his career, T20 is the only format he can hope to make a match winning contribution. If he plays for 10 overs, then WI is most likely to win the match.

Good that Samuels was dropped that was well overdue however he should have been replaced by Ashley Nurse who can bowl decent off spin and then smash it at the end, if they were just going to replace with a batsman it should have been Blackwood instead of Darren Bravo.

Gayle has been useless for a couple of years now. Hopefully he has been dropped.

Also agree with someone else above where is Kevan?
