Cullinan: Pakistan's spinners key

Match facts

March 21, 2014
Start time 1930 local (1330 GMT)

Big picture

There was a time when India-Pakistan matches, no matter where they were being played, no matter what tournament they were part of, brought two entire countries to a halt for days. All the people could talk of days, weeks, months in advance was "the match". Sachin Tendulkar didn't sleep properly for 12 nights leading into India's World Cup match against Pakistan in 2003. He said he was made to live that match a year in advance. Pakistan players were believed to find extra powers when they played India. All sorts of myth surrounded the match. That India couldn't beat Pakistan on a Friday was a fact nobody contested.

This match hasn't that kind of anticipation. And it's not as if there has been a glut of India-Pakistan matches to make this less significant. It is just that times are changing. Even warm-up matches are live on television. It all means less time for the mind to build up to the big one. It doesn't help that for the first time in the history of tournaments of five or more teams that India and Pakistan are playing the first match of the main draw. It is like asking Bruce Springsteen to be the opening act on a rock concert. A bit like shahi paneer or butter chicken at the start of the buffet.

It can't be such a bad thing, though, that there isn't much hype attached to this match. As it is there will be nerves and edginess at the start of a big tournament; it can do without unwanted, at times uncricketing pressures. And if the match is good enough - like another supposed-to-be-nondescript one 19 days ago was - it will capture the people's imagination.

The modern, almost classical by now, differences between India and Pakistan will be on show. India stable, at times to the point of stubbornness but still stable. Pakistan happy to chop and change, their captain's neck always under the block. India with their batsmen. Pakistan with their bowlers. India with their love of the chase. Pakistan defence. With a warm feeling, nonetheless, of two of their best chases of recent times - the Test against Sri Lanka in Sharjah, the Asia Cup ODI against India in Dhaka - and the dew almost certain to play a role in this evening game. Don't worry about the absence of hype; this match will be all right by the time MS Dhoni and Mohammad Hafeez walk out for the toss at 7pm on Friday. And, by the way, many of the players on these teams are young enough to not even know of the Ghost Of The Friday.

Watch out for

R Ashwin v Saeed Ajmal. On slow and low pitches much like both spinners' home conditions, these offspinners with deliveries that go away in their repertoire will be a contest to savour. Ajmal, in particular, has given India much grief. Even Tendulkar couldn't pick his doosra. The Indians now are facing unorthodox net bowlers to simulate Ajmal. In two Twenty20 matches against Pakistan, Ashwin has conceded only 44 runs for three wickets. So there is evidence to suggest both raise their game against each other, a traditional barometer of the quality of a cricketer from India or Pakistan.

MS Dhoni v Shahid Afridi. India-Pakistan matches sometimes come down to which of the leaders led a calmer team; others to which leader roused more emotion. It is just the timing and the feel. Pakistan have traditionally enjoyed the emotion in order to bring the best out of them, India have tried to play it down because they believe it allows them to handle games better. India prefer the Dhoni-like match-winning six in the last over, Pakistan the Afridi version.

Team news

India haven't given any indication that they will use Ajinkya Rahane, who opens in the IPL, at the top of the innings. In the warm-ups, Rohit Sharma, who bats in the middle order in the IPL, and Shikhar Dhawan have opened. India haven't actually ruled out Rahane as an opener, but India are not known to be flexible with their plans. If Rahane doesn't open, his participation in the match depends on how many bowlers India play. If they can rely on Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and Rohit Sharma to be the fifth bowler, there could be space for Rahane. Or even Stuart Binny if India want a better batsman than a specialist bowler and still some extra assurance with the ball. Given the dew, a third spinner might be ruled out.

India (possible): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Yuvraj Singh, 6 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 7 Ajinkya Rahane/Stuart Binny/Amit Mishra/Varun Aaron/Mohit Sharma, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Mohammed Shami.

Kamran Akmal has made a strong case for himself as opener with a fifty against New Zealand in the warm-up game. If he does come in, he replaces Ahmed Shehzad and relieves brother Umar of wicketkeeping duties. Shoaib Malik is a good chance, too, for his India-slaying capabilities if nothing else.

Pakistan (possible): 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Sharjeel Khan, 3 Mohammad Hafeez (capt.), 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Sohaib Maqsood, 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Bilawal Bhatti, 9 Sohail Tanvir, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Saeed Ajmal.

Pitch and conditions

Dew remains a big concern, but this being a Twenty20 starting at 7.30pm the side batting first will be disadvantaged a little less than otherwise. Expect turn too.

Stats and trivia

  • Pakistan have never beaten India in a World Cup match
  • MS Dhoni has never scored an international Twenty20 fifty

Quotes

"I feel it has mellowed down to some extent, whatever the reason maybe, you do not see many altercations on the field. But still you see very competitive cricket, which I feel is very important."
MS Dhoni feels the rivalry has lost a lot of its ugliness, and he doesn't mind it

"History does not really bother us. Irrespective of whether it is good or bad, it is history. All days are not great days. You should be ready for the next day."
Mohammad Hafeez is not losing sleep over Pakistan's winless record against India in World Cups

India's big worry has been their opening. Neither Dhawan nor Rohit Sharma has fired in the warm-up games and their form since the South Africa tour hasn't been inspiring either. Kohli and Dhoni have been in sublime form. Yuvraj has been in good form in domestic cricket and does well in T20Is so it might just be just a matter of time until he fires. Raina was the big concern but he's been the big scorer in both warm-up games. Ashwin has been doing well and our bowling has looked pretty good as of late. We have a good side but it all depends on who plays well on the day.

  • on March 21, 2014, 13:48 GMT

india vs pakistan has always been pakistan's bowling vs india's batting...!! The fact that when these sides meet, the matches have been won out of last over and even last ball which has made the fans waiting for them..!!

We should start looking at jadeja to open with shikhar in all three formats. Jadeja misses opportunities when sent so late in the innings. He is one of best strikers of the ball and shares a world record 3 triples in first class with pujara

  • 87_Pravin on March 21, 2014, 12:01 GMT

Now a Days MSD doing politics very well. It's non sense going with Rohit to open. even Nepal, HK won't pick him as opener for any format. Instead of Rahane why he is going with Rohit.??? Even Ashwin s a better opener than Rohit. Stop this non sense Mr.MSD.

  • Cric_Info1987 on March 21, 2014, 11:50 GMT

without prejudice to my other comments:

    1. India has a record to beat Pakistan in every major league. 2. T20 being dominated by Batsmen gives advantage to a batting line up like India which bats with all-rounder uptil 8th-9th wicket. 3. India has no scarcity of part-time bowlers which can be used to shuffle in a 20-over match (though insufficient in a 50-over match). 4. A Captain like Dhoni 5. Two Batsmen like Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina who have been regularly destroying opponents. 6. India cant be beaten in Home Conditions (bangladesh is like second home) 7. Afridi is a threat, but it is set-off against Yuvraj Singh and the Balance tilts in favour of India. 8. R.Jadega and R. Ashwin are two all-rounders playing in addition to the existing all-rounders like Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Surat binny , Rohit Sharama, and Virat Kholi. (7 all-rounders for T20 format) 9. India has the best wicket-keeper who does not make false appeals. So, do you still think Pakistan can win ? I doubt that

  • on March 21, 2014, 11:47 GMT

Since both the teams are well balanced,i wish both the teams play well and we see some good cricket.

kamran akmal and shoaib malik should me match winners today because both playing their 5th world cup both have a good experiene inshallah pakistan beat india today

  • Imad_K on March 21, 2014, 11:38 GMT

Not sure what these experts are talking about. The fact is India struggle when they play outside of the sub continent on quick bouncy tracks against quick bowlers - even though their last tour against South Africa was successful because they have improved much more with these news guys who look considerably more comfortable against the short ball than the guys they replaced. So I'm sure if you look at when India did well in the T20 or one day World Cup cricket those matches were probably played in the subcontinent. India would probably be the favourites to win playing in Bangladesh - but with T20 if one batsmen has a good match you basically win the game.

  • Crick_Expert on March 21, 2014, 11:26 GMT

PAK should work hard to win this match. INDIA will play with 15 players. 11 indian plyers+2 umpires+Shaib Malik/Soail Tanvir.

  • on March 21, 2014, 11:20 GMT

Team Pakistan will definitely get more chances to win if the include Zulfiqar Baber. He is known to be a "Secret Weapon" to team Pak. There should not be Sohail tanveer in playing eleven.

  • Cric_Info1987 on March 21, 2014, 10:09 GMT

    I am sure all the Indian fans are expecting 1. that PAK is all out 78 (14.4 overs) and IND makes 79/0 (VK 74*) 2. IND 212/2 (Dhoni - 100* and R.Jadega - 100*).........PAK 50 all out in 15.4 overs (R.Jadega 6-10 and R.Ashwin 4-10)

I am sure all the PAK's fans are expecting: 1. that PAK achieves 437/0 (20 overs) ..........IND is allout for 37 (10 overs, Ajmal 4/7, Gul 3/6, Tallah 5/7, Afridi 6/8, Junaid 5/8) 2. IND 69 all out (11 overs) .......PAK scores 72/0 in 1.2 overs (Hafeez 75* of 8 balls)

guys. realistic expectations are better lived up by the respective teams. It's pointless making such exaggerated claims about your teams which can't even perform outside the sub-continent.

It is India's batting vs Pakistan 's bowling. India is a far better fielding side. Dhoni is a better keeper. india has a slight edge.

  • CheerforUnderdogs on March 21, 2014, 9:58 GMT

Kohli is new Sachin for Pakistan. He will ensure that record in WC remains intact.

PAK opted to chase against India in Asia Cup to nullify Kohli's effect in chases but same plan to chase will backfire today.

  • on March 21, 2014, 9:57 GMT

India seriously needs to work out a feasible opening pair. Dhawan can open, even though he has failed in the warm ups, as he gets going very quickly and these subcontinental conditions suit his style of play. Rohit Sharma is one of the best lower order batsmen in t20s and hence should come in at 4 or 5. India tried opening with Kohli once in a limited overs game and it failed. But the conditions were different in New Zealand and Kohli has opened once in an IPL game and was unbeaten at 50 odd in an 8 overs per side game. It would be interesting if India try it out with Kohli and Dhawan this time. I remember watching Kohli coming in at 3 in an ODI game against Pakistan 2 years ago after Gambhir got out after 2 to 3 balls in Bangladesh, and made a match-winning 183.

The perfect line up for this match would be: 1. Kohli 2. Dhawan 3. Raina 4. Yuvraj 5. Rohit 6. Dhoni 7. Binny 8. Jadeja 9. Ashwin 10. Bhuvneshwar Kumar 11. Mohammad Shami/Varun Aaron

    PAK XI: 1 Shehzad 2 Sharjeel 3 Hafeez (C) 4 U Akmal (WK) 5 K Akmal 6 Maqsood 7 Malik 8 Afridi 9 Gul 10 Ajmal 11 Junaid

    * Don't give the wicket keeping to Kamran Akmal. He's a long list of missing catches, stumping & run outs. The worst keeper. Play him as a batsman. U Akmal is a better keeper than K Akmal. Don't underestimate Shehzad. He's powerful.

Also back to back games over weekend between gap of 5 days can go either way. India will win against PAK not sure if they will qualify or not ??

  • on March 21, 2014, 9:40 GMT

Sharjeel and ahmad Shehzad must open the innings, they are the moral breakers of indian fast bowlers. as india is thinking about dropping bheneshwar khumar. and all other players of pakistan are very good players of spin so. game is 60% in pakistan's favour i think so. India cant defend even 160 with this bowling line up.

Drop Shahzad, he has to learn to rotate the strike, he wastes too many deliveries. Sharjeel is a real t20 player, he has to go out there and blast right from the word go.

The problem with pakistan cricket is that they do not pick players on merit and ability, to not pick a player like Imran Nazir for a major tournament is a crime and a loss for pakistan cricket and its fans or is it that his face does not fit with the likes of Mr Hafeez and co for most cricket followers its a shame as he is the only opening batsman pakistan have that would solve their opening problem a void left for so long by Saeed Anwar.

play binny in place of bhuvanesh..u get a gud slow medium pace with a batsman.mishra in place of ashwin as his batting is not gonna do any heroics if he cant bowl well.so aaron+shami+binny+jadeja+mishra

  • nkoch on March 21, 2014, 8:34 GMT

come on Dhoni, make right changes. Rahane for Rohit/Dhavan and Mishra as 3rd spinner. You got to play Mishra. He'l take wickets. and Ranahe because opening partnership is weak and he's probably best fielder in the side right now.

  • tanstell87 on March 21, 2014, 8:33 GMT

Dhoni has to play at 4 or 5....enough of him coming at 6 and playing the HERO role always...why cant he bat up the order and control the innings till the end...

had the same number of opportunities would have given to Yusuf Pathan or Robin Uthappa in International cricket, India would have been firmly sitting at top in both ODIs & T20Is...but Dhoni has certain favorites & he sticks with those, irrespective of the results...Ashwin-Jadeja-Raina & Rohit..

I am pretty sure Stuart Binny wont find place in next ODI series India play in England...but there would definitely be Raina

Ideal 11 for todays match should have been

    Gambhir-Dhawan-Kohli-Dhoni-Yuvraj-Raina-Yusuf-Jadeja-Bhajji-Aaron-Shami...

Pakistan are certainly looking favorites after their performance in Asia Cup and certainly have moral high after Afridi clicking for them on crucial moments, But T20 is a funny format any team can win on given day. If Pakistan rely on past performances then they shouldn't forget Pakistan never beat India in WC matches. So I hope both these teams play in present and don't brag about Past. I hope better team wins. Best wishes to both India and Pakistan. A last ball thriller will certainly will make anybody's day no matter which team wins.

Posted by Muhammad Ali on (March 21, 2014, 4:43 GMT) I have one question for both Indian and Pakistani fans. why India always find great batsmen when they do not have quality bowling at home to play against. and why Pakistan fails to find good batsmen when they have quality bowling to face at home. ? why?

VERY GOOD Q,ONLY ANS SEEM TO BE: TO INSURE GOOD RIVALRY,WHICH IS POSSIBLE ONLY WHEN BEST BATSMEN ARE AGAINST BEST BOWLERS...

Playing XI Shehzad,Kamran,Hafeez,Sohaib,Umer,Malik,Afridi,Bilawal,Ajmal,Gul,Junaid. Junaid should be preferred over Tanvir and Talha as he can bowl yorkers consistently and also has pace to beat the batsman. It will also release some pressure from Gul. Bhatti should be utilized with the new ball.We only need 1 or 2 good overs from him

  • on March 21, 2014, 8:24 GMT

India to win by 20 runs

  • on March 21, 2014, 8:24 GMT

Players XI should be : Dhawan,Rahane,Kohli,Raina,Yuvraj,Dhoni,Jadeja,Amit Mishra,Ashwin,Bhuvi,Shami...I think Indias main problem is bowling not batting...so India should go with three spinners...Rohit is not a goood opener and in middle order Raina & Yuvi will giv allrounder option with good fielding...so better to choose Mishra over Rohit......

  • DAKayani on March 21, 2014, 8:21 GMT

  • SachinRao on March 21, 2014, 8:21 GMT

I am in favour of Rohit and Mishra. The 2nd seamer slot with the lack of opportunity to Mohit should rest with Aaron as Bhuvi looked out of sorts. I think its important to unsettle hafeez and attack the powerplays as the wickets tend to get slower and the ajmal wd be difficult to negotiate. Either we send Ashwim at the top or at 3. He shd be given a license to kill. We have too msny leftoes which shd suit ajmal and hafeez.

  • on March 21, 2014, 8:18 GMT

i dont see any reason of playing shoaib malik , instead of him bhatti should play . pak should attack kohli with ajmal n afridi with slip in place , in all previous outings i have seen so many attempted drives from kohli on spinners going in slip cordon. if hafeez captains the side wisely its a must win for pak .. :)

  • Cricket_Man on March 21, 2014, 8:03 GMT

I am a 100 percent sure that Ahmed Shehzad would make the playing 11. Sharjeel would miss out because he hasn't had any solid performances yet. Secondly, I think the hype is pretty much there, at least in Pakistan. People started anticipating this match right after the victory over India in the Asia Cup. Probably that's not the case in India.

  • 2477 on March 21, 2014, 7:59 GMT

    Pakistan 11 should be 1.Ahmed Shezad. 2.Kamran Akmal. 3.Hafeez. 4.Umar Akmal. 5.Sohaib Maqsood 6.Shahid Afridi. 7.Bilawal bhatti 8.Umar gul 9.Junaid Khan 10.Saeed Ajmal 11.Mohammed Talha

In this team you 4 fast bowlers and 3 spinners so there is no need of Shoaib Malik and Sohail Tanvir

  • muba85 on March 21, 2014, 7:55 GMT

Today's match is the perfect start to this t20 carnival. India Vs Pakistan matches have always had lots of hype around it. As far as this match is concerned, it is no different from yesteryears! PRESSURE PRESSURE and PRESSURE for the fans more than the players :) Everyone keeps on predicting in favour of India or Pakistan, but what matters is that 'CRICKET' should win ALWAYS!!! Keeping aside the tensions that had been growing between these two countries, let us hope SPORTS can bridge the gap and make the world a better place where everyone can be independent and enjoy the SPORTS to its fullest.

I am an Indian and I would say its again 50 50 game for both the sides.. Shorter the version of this game gives edge to Pak team. Concern for Pak.. 1) Batting is unpredictable, Sharjeel, Maqsood & even Fawad didnt impress me at all. 2) Biggest worry is their fielding & running b/w the wickets. 3) Plus point is their A+ bowling attack Concern for Ind.. 1) Dhoni's obsession with his Jijaji Rohit who is gud for nothing and does put pressure on Dhawan as well... 2) Bowling is like 3rd grade bowler of any cricketing nation. Its understandable that u dont ve speed in your bowling but u can bowl with line & length. 3) Plus point Virat Kohli along with raina.. Hope for a good match and best of luck for both the teams..... Its my humble request to all the Indian players (specially Virat) please learn how to respect the game & Players of the opposition team from SIR RAHUL DRAVID..

One these wickets, India should play bowlers who can take the pace off, and let the batsmen use their blades. I would be tempted to open the batting with Rahane and Dhawan and drop Rohit Sharma down the order. Kohli, Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Sharma, Dhoni, Jadeja, Ashwin, Shami and Bhuvanesh Kumar, complete my XI, in that order

  • dunger.bob on March 21, 2014, 7:40 GMT

Pakistan are banking on their spinners because the pace bowlers haven't had much form recently. India are banking on the bloody-mindedness of Kohli and the calm of Dhoni to get through them. It should be interesting.

There are reports of rift within the Pakistan team and if performance in warmup against SA are any indications the rift is playing itself out.If India wins today it wouldnt be because of good performance but disjointed effort by Pakistan.Lets face it its much more crucial game for India than Pakistan, Pak can afford to drop points against India, since they have firepower to beat the rest of guys in the group handsdown but if India go down today(unlikely as it is) they would struggle to get out of the group

  • AHKhan121 on March 21, 2014, 7:30 GMT

India has better chance today as Dhoni has rejoined along with Raina. Youvraj is another threat for Pakistan as his previous performances against Pak jubilant Indian spectators. I am sure that it's a interesting game for World T20 or Pakistan and India india also beaten pakistan in all ICC Big Event, but past id past, because New game is new game, and pakistan is must to beat india this time, india has poor bollowing attack, but pakistan have average batsmen and good Bollowing side, i want to play with Zulfiqar Babar (Left arm spinner) is surprise package for Indians with two pacers like gul and Talha. My Pakistan Team is (kamran, shahzad, hafeez, umar akmal, shoaib maqsood, Malik, afridi, gul, talha, saeed and Zulfiqar) is best side for playing. INSHA ALLAH PAKISTAN WILL WIN TODAY

  • Rags57 on March 21, 2014, 6:44 GMT

It is difficult to imagine India winning this match because, on paper, Pakistan are a far better side. They have quality players both in bowling and batting. Barring some terrible batting collapse or terrible fielding, Pakistan should win easily. What may help India is winning the toss and having Dhoni and Raina shepherding the chase in the last few overs. Dhoni needs to shed his conservative captaincy image if he is to become better and more successful. Let us hope he does for the sake of the one billion fans.

    PAK vs IND

    Expert Opinion

Arch-Rivals meets again in BD with history Favouring IND.

On a Slow Pitch Team with better spinners should bat first and defend 140.

Spin-trio of Pak (Ajml,Afr,Hfz) give them slight advantage in a close game. Except for Jadeja Pak should deal IND weak bowling comfortably to balance IND-batting power Ignore the History and technically Pak should win

    Chances PAK 55% IND 45%

  • on March 21, 2014, 6:30 GMT

Pak batting is always fighting a war within themselves and indian bowling is way below par. So it always is between indian batting and pak bowling. Somehow indian batsmen seem to struggle and dont bat with authority (they still score good though )against pakistani bowlers, credit should be given to paki bowlers for dat. Key for india today will be yuvraj, kohli, ashwin and Dhoni others must chip in and contribute For Pakistan Hafeez, ukmals, Malik, boom boom and ajmal (if they all click no need for others to contribute pak will win).

  • on March 21, 2014, 6:27 GMT

  • on March 21, 2014, 6:21 GMT

Pakistanis have to come out with responsible attitude rather than a demolishing India attitude? The talent is there is there but the aggression sometimes lets them down.

  • on March 21, 2014, 6:12 GMT

Infact pak did manage to tie the durban game from t20 2007 wc, only crapy.misbah can explain y we didnt win! Plz dont play avg players like tanvir n sharjeel, kamran, they are not honest n play from heart players. Sharjeel is poor in th field, looks over weight and wont score more than 20 runs. In th warm up game against sa sharjeel the big striker scored 3 of 9 deliveries. Hafeez needs to play at better rate, his too slow to begin with and puts lot pressure on other batsmen.

  • rickyvoncanterbury on March 21, 2014, 6:10 GMT

Of course this game is low on hype, you have one side who are a very well balanced team who are good at T20, and the other is not.

  • on March 21, 2014, 6:07 GMT

t/20 is just a matter of butchering the bowling so the team selection should be of those players who have the ability to go on a rampage straight away and a few strike rotaters that compels me to say that the selection for the w/c should have been dhawan kohli rahane yuvraaj raina ypathan utthappa sehwag sbinny dhoni rjadeja ashwin ipathan rdhawan mshami in these conditions this a perfect mixture which can spoil any opposition plan in a matter of few overs and the final 11 should have been selected according to the conditions and against which opp we are playing

  • on March 21, 2014, 6:07 GMT

Though I am tensed but I treat this as one of the regular matches. Considering strength and past records, India should not find any difficulty beating Pakistan this time also. MSD's presence makes all the difference. Had he been there in just concluded Asia Cup, India would have been winner. I give India 7 out of 10 and Pak 5 out of 10. I am optimistic that INDIA is clear favourite to win this ICC tournament. Best of luck MSD and co.! WAZIR

Irrespective of what happens today, it is Pakistan who start as clear favourites because of the versatility in their bowling department. It is best India bats first and sets a total of 160+ and then get a couple of early wickets and allow the spinners to take control.

Today's result will MAINLY depend upon one BIG question: Who will commit LESS number of errors (unintended or intended; doesn't matter)? So, true cricket fans from either side should not get worked up about the outcome.

Winning a cup gradually has become less important than many other considerations !

  • cricket_fan_1980 on March 21, 2014, 5:18 GMT

Hafeez did well as captain in the last T20 WC, first two games he scored 40s against NZ and Beng in wins. Actually, in Pakistan's tournament opener against NZ, he also opened the bowling with figures of 0/15 in 4. Bit of a shame that Nasir Jamshed lost his place in the side so quickly. Talented batsman. In Pakistan's 3rd game, Hafeez picked up 2 against SA, captaining well for another win. It was Kohli in Pakistan's 4th game, if anyone remembers, who bought Hafeez's revamped T20 outfit to its knees. Pakistan next put in a really stellar performance against Australia, with Kamran and Razzaq nerves saving the game for Pakistan, along with a great Jamshed innings. Hafeez bowled really well in this game too. Anyway, point is, Hafeez has a really good record as a T20 WC captain, which bears well for Pakistan's progress in the tournament. The writer, Mr Monga, mistakenly assumed Shehzad would be replaced instead of Sharjeel, that was amusing. Also, bad choice for series opener.

  • sergio11 on March 21, 2014, 5:14 GMT

I think PAK s favorite this time..simply because of the quality in pace bowling...ind is unfortunately having a spin based attack, considering the fact that dew will be around..i think ind is having a big problem..and also the form of there openers...i would like to see Kholi opening..simple because,we dont want to lose too many wickets early...so team must be like 1.Dhawan 2.Kholi 3.Raina 4.Rohit 5.yuvi 6 Dhoni 7 Jaddu 8.Ashwin 9.Varun 10.Bhuvi 11 shami

  • checkOnCricket on March 21, 2014, 5:02 GMT

still on paper ind look a better side than pak. in form players... but the inclusion of kamran and shoaib gives pak a huge advantage because they are match winners and change the game in a jiffy...

Pak's opening has been stabilised by kamran's inclusion but ind's opening pair still have a long way to go to prove at this stage(T20)...

MSD will go with below XI- As my prediction 1)Dhavan 2)Rohit3)Virat4)Yuvaraj5)Raina6)Dhoni7)Jadeja8)Ashwin9)Amit10)B Kumar11)Shami , There is no place for Rahana and Binny for todays match. he cant satisfy each and every fans, If win everyone says great win but loss everyone will say MSD's Mistake, he knows what to do, suppot team india to bring T20 World cup home(India).

  • AnoMaLy on March 21, 2014, 4:55 GMT

@Albert_cambell - You should be the coach of pakistan team with such brilliant accurate analysis. Good luck to pakistan coz they will need it looking at the Ind vs Pak WC stats.

  • Sandasiri_Asitha on March 21, 2014, 4:52 GMT

I feel, Misbah is still a capable T20 batsmen than Shohib n Hafeez in BD conditions with his monster hits. Will be a good game, but clearly favor of Pakistan cz, they really unlikely to collapse against Indian attack.

  • rpaddu on March 21, 2014, 4:50 GMT

Match may not be a cracker or thriller as hyped. It looks like a dull one with India ending as winner..Let us see..

  • sandeepgla on March 21, 2014, 4:49 GMT

I see this match like this 1) if india bowls first chancing of winning 100% 2) bat first 50% chance of winning.

  • Junaid.baig on March 21, 2014, 4:47 GMT

Whatever the outcome. We want good cricket and thrilling contest.

  • on March 21, 2014, 4:43 GMT

I have one question for both Indian and Pakistani fans. why India always find great batsmen when they do not have quality bowling at home to play against. and why Pakistan fails to find good batsmen when they have quality bowling to face at home. ? why?

  • Haider-pak-awsome on March 21, 2014, 4:41 GMT

With the current form of Pakistan and also the fact that current form of India (mainly loosing most of the matches) Pakistan should be through in this match. The other plus point for Pakistan is their world class bowling. Pakistan is definately favourite today.

  • Asif-Nawaz on March 21, 2014, 4:38 GMT

A very bad choice if Ahmad Shehzad dropped and sharjeel picked. Junaid khan should be in, in place of Tanvir

  • on March 21, 2014, 4:30 GMT

In big clashes like this there is always something more to the game then what we fans perceive. This is partly the reason why Pakistan have not defeated India in WC matches despite being the stronger team in most of the clashes. Being a Pakistani fan, I hope there is not much at stake tomorrow, but highly unlikely specially after some horrific incidents after the recent match between these two. I won't go into details. Best of luck to both the teams.

  • on March 21, 2014, 4:28 GMT

i think india is favorites for today's game due to strong batting line

  • Albert_cambell on March 21, 2014, 4:24 GMT

Lets summarize the Indian team for this world cup. 1.Shikar(FTB) 2.Rohit(IPL bully) 3. Kohli(Best batsman in the team and also the best fast bowler in the team!) 4. Yuvraj(Another FTB. On his way to make record for scoring most number of ducks) 5. Raina( Cant even play short balls in flat tracks) 6. Dhoni( Best finisher in the world, but only in subcontinent) 7. jadeja( Specialist fielder) 8.Ashwin(I am still waiting for him to turn the cricket ball) 9. Bhuveneshawar( Another praveen kumar in the making) 10. Shami(Best replacement for Ishant. Can win matches for the opponents on his own) 11.Mishra( Another IPL bully) 12. Rahane(Only against minnows).

  • on March 21, 2014, 4:22 GMT

We have to look for two solid openers. ASAP.

Meanwhile, at least for this tourney, chose any two of the following three: Rahane (with better technique, IPL experience & willingness to rotate strike), Ashwin (better technique, good defense & previous opening experience in 1st class cricket), and Virat Kohli (anyway, he effectively opens in many matches, as Dravid used to do wen the 1st wicket falls too early).

But, I wonder whether Dhoni & Uncle Duncan have the flexible mind-set to do it? That is a $3 million dollor (better than the highest ever bid in IPL) question?

  • Kashif.Anwar on March 21, 2014, 4:15 GMT

I think Sidharth Monga got it wrong for Pakistani openers. In case Kamran Akmal plays, Sharjeel Khan or Shoaib Maqsood will be left out and not Ahmed Shahzad, even though Sharjeel has a better strike rate. In bowlers/bowling all-rounders, Sohail Tanveer is the worst to have in team, I would rather go with Muhammad Talha.

  • on March 21, 2014, 4:07 GMT

    1).MS dhoni 2).V kohli 3).S raina 4).yuvraj 5).Rohit 6).Rahane 7).jadeja 8).shami 9).mohit sharma 10).Ashwin 11).B kumar this line up will be better for India

  • on March 21, 2014, 4:01 GMT

  • on March 21, 2014, 3:56 GMT

In india pak game you cant predict who is favorite as on thenmatch day every one give 100 % if we look at record india r favorite but pakistan is more balanced side than india due to quality all rounder afridi hafeez bhatti but india had some excellent batting dhoni virat yuvraj

  • on March 21, 2014, 3:52 GMT

Today is india day today india opening with rahane and shikar so rohith can play middel india give chance to binny he can danger in death overs

  • USA_Raj on March 21, 2014, 3:49 GMT

Here's hoping Dhoni's quote on "the lack of altercations" seeps into the psyches of not just the players from the Indian and Pakistani teams but also their most rabid fans. MSD continues to impress not just with his captaincy but also his uncanny grasp of saying the right things at the right time.

I am so looking forward to a highly competitive game of cricket from two very talented teams. And thanks to Cricinfo, ESPN and the Internet, I will be watching the T20 game live for the first time - ever!

  • on March 21, 2014, 3:42 GMT

i think on paper indian team looks much better as compare to pakistan, and they also perform well today, india will have an edge because they never loss any match in t20 world cup, only batting perform a vital role on this pitch, who will bat well, they will win today, india is much favorite for today

  • IndianCoolGuy on March 21, 2014, 3:27 GMT

I used to completely believe in MSD and his tactics. but now a days my heart says to believe in him but not my mind. The total world is able to find the fault but not MSD. my straight question to MSD is "Is a player important than a nation ?" Hope you understand whom I am referring to. (Mr.Rohit Sharma) What he is doing at opening when he is not a natural opener? At least send Ajinkya Rahane instead. MSD, if you do not believe in Mishra, then at least push Ajinkya to opening and place Rohit in middle order.

    MSD's favorite players are : 1.Rohit 2.Jadeja 3. Raina 4.Ashwin MSD's unlike list : 1.Yuvi 2.Mishra 3. Rayudu 4.Ishwar Pandey MSD's neutral list: 1. Dhawan 2.Kohli 3.Ajinkya 4.Bhuvi 5.Shami

MSD, if you do not want to drop your favorite players, then at least think about this below order

    1.Dhawan 2.Ajinkya 3. Kohli 4.Raina 5.Yuvi 6.MSD 7.Rohit 8.Jadeja 9.Ashwin 10. Bhuvi 11. Shami

PK have not been able to win a single match with India in any WC format. Most of time PK has better side than India but still they lost.

  • alipk52 on March 21, 2014, 3:26 GMT

I would have rather opted for Abdul Razzaq than this mediocre Shoaib Malik, india are clear favourites here because of the fact that majority of them are All-Rounders, Shoaib Malik fails to deliver every now and then, still gets regular chances, poor Razzaq real injustice for him, even I would have rule out Hafeez for Razzaq, after all Hafeez apparently ended his career, I am sure Shoaib Malik will fail again, he was use to be good when he was captain, playing under another captain always proved failure with Malik, we lack finisher big time here, India has Yuvraj, Dhoni, Raina & Jadeja who can finish well, Pakistan only has inconsistent Afridi, though he has the impact on bowlers mind which results in them feeling heat whenever Afridi comes to bat!

  • on March 21, 2014, 3:18 GMT

I wonder why they are giving chances to sharjeel he failed several times why dont you open it kamran and hafeez. opt out malik its a waste bring in someone explosive. great contest tonight. Pakistan Zindabad..

  • Salmans_A_Qureshi on March 21, 2014, 3:18 GMT

Just to correct the writer, Pakistan has beaten India in World Cup T20 on 17th September 2012. So this Jinx is no longer with Pakistan.

  • on March 21, 2014, 3:13 GMT

In my view T20 is all about batting so every team should consider the same, include as many as all rounder is possible. Even Saeed Ajmal can give 40 runs in his 4 over spell so no need to too much worry about bowling.

In this format Junaid Khan & Talha are not good option we should include Bilawal, Sohail Tanvir and Omer Gul who can make some runs in need.

My side will be...1.Ahmed Shezad 2 kamram 3 Hafeez 4 umer akmal 5 shoaib malik 6 sohaid Maqsood 7 afridi 8 Bilawal 9 Umer Gul 10 Sohail Tanvir 11 ajmal

this looks winning combination....alll best wishes and good luck with Pakistani team

  • bablankalhan55_youtube on March 21, 2014, 3:08 GMT

For Rohit Sharma the famous proverb should be rephrased as " Class is temporary inconsistency is permanent"...players like Uthappa (who is highest scorer in Vijay Hazare trophy) should be given more chances..Also Manoj tiwary,Kedar jadhav and Abhishek Nayar should be persisted with in T20's

  • on March 21, 2014, 3:05 GMT

the player s to be dropped from the indian team for the match are yuvraj , bhuvi , mohit, they should play binny mishra and aaron

  • st_aubrun on March 21, 2014, 3:04 GMT

It is not only in the 'World Cup' that Pakistan have not beaten India (only the 50-over tournament is called the 'World Cup' by the ICC). Other than the World Cup, Pakistan have also never beaten India in the 'World T20 Cup'. Or any in other world tournament either.

  • on March 21, 2014, 2:59 GMT

The results are here. If India bat first India will make 159 and will win by 15 runs and if Pakistan bat first. What ever the score. India will win by 6 wickets.

  • Siva_Bala75 on March 21, 2014, 2:58 GMT

Shami + Aaron and Ashwin+Jadeja. No point in taking another bowler- be it Mishra or Binny or Bhuvi. Play to your strength. Play both Rahane and Rohit. Rahane should open and bat long- others should bat aggressively around him.

  • MonkeyShot on March 21, 2014, 2:52 GMT

@KamranMehdi: Shoaib Malik is an all-rounder with a temperament for T20. Sharjeel is new so I wouldn't put him in T20 right away.

  • Albert_cambell on March 21, 2014, 2:51 GMT

India Have lost 8 consecutive Odis to top teams. They are now a punching bag for all the top teams. Pakistan should be able to win it without breaking any sweat.

Media can hype anything... you chose not to. Why? I would suggest political correctness. Try not to softly, softly everything? It is boring.

  • on March 21, 2014, 2:27 GMT

??? The analogy of the first big match of the tournament being a blockbuster (something the Rugby World Cup and numerous others always try and do to get the thing rolling hot from the get-go and kicking it off in style!) being like Springsteen kicking off a concert (which starts the same day as every toher performer unlike the cricket, which builds up in numbers throughout the day, not act-specific like a cricket tournament, I could go on... not great analogy, as not comparable) is way off. Sorry. The t20 WC needed a big opening game and this is it. I salute them. Every game matters to make the semi-finals so it is a virtual quarter-final for these teams considering their draw anyway. As for your reasoning on why it has all calmed down you know why this really is.... it is about the dilution and getting over territorial arguments in Kashmir, terrorism, politics and so forth... it has nothing to do with more games being shown, for as you admit, they hardly play. Just be honest? Thanks.

  • gannyboy on March 21, 2014, 2:25 GMT

For India to win two things are very important, one of the top three has to score big and stay till the 16th or the 17th over and the other important thing is that India needs one of its fast bowler to be both economical and a wicket taker. With the dew factor around India needs to play three medium quicks instead of three spinners. All said and done currently Pakistan looks a better team the only thing that works in India's favor is the record that they hold against Pakistan in ICC world cups.

  • on March 21, 2014, 2:20 GMT

I don't think anyone got (and is still getting) as much support as Rohit, from the very aggressive Mumbai lobby (which includes three very vocal and influential cricket veteran-turned-commentators).

He may have talents; but if it can't be put to use for the overall welfare of the team, it is worthless, like the frozen bank accounts of a 'billionaire' !

Rohit is good for Test cricket. His 'dot-ball addiction' which is OK for test cricket, is cancerous especially for T-20, is an indirect indication of his 'batting selfishness'. Note, that I didn't say he is selfish; since it is just 'batting' selfishness -- reluctance to give strike to anyone else.

For short format, I would put him at No.13. He may not even like to be the 12th man carrying drinks !

  • Indian_Kari_Pakku on March 21, 2014, 2:07 GMT

Considering the current form of India, we have no chance with Pakistan what so ever.

  • spinkingKK on March 21, 2014, 1:59 GMT

I don't know why teams worry about batting depth in T20's. India should play 5 specialist bowlers PLUS Jadeja. Bhuvi, Aaron, Shami, Ashwin and Mishra. Have a lot of bowling options. 4 batsmen plus Dhoni Plus Jadeja plus the tail end batting is more than enough for this silly game of 20 overs.

  • on March 21, 2014, 1:45 GMT

    Junaid Khan should also play

  • ameen786 on March 21, 2014, 1:42 GMT

  • Saadcricketlover on March 21, 2014, 1:05 GMT

First choice 11 for pakistan: Shehzad, kamran, hafeez, umar akmal, sohaib maqsood, shoaib malik, shahid afridi, umar gul, junaid, talha, ajmal. Second choice: shehzad, sharjeel, hafeez, umar akmal, maqsood, kamran, afridi, gul, junaid, talha, ajmal.

Kamran Akmal shouldn't keep umar should. Kamran will spoil everything if he keeps wickets. He's a good opener who can replace mediocre sharjeel.

If we compare both teams on the basis of the batting and bowling units, clearly Indians are better with the bat and Pakistanis with the bowl. The difference may come due to the fielding where India is ahead and captaincy which again can be a strength for India. Overall nice game of cricket awaits with India little ahead and let cricket win this match.

    Over-hype at its best!!

A competition of who'll play worst and who'll brag most. Nobody cares for you. Grow up fans!! One can't play more than 15 overs in an inning, can't cross double figure mark in batting and fielding....horrible. Other lying on 2.5 batsmen, can't bowl 20 overs in tact and don't understand how they did win world cup. Another one who win on opponent mercy, now stands in different group, still remembering fluke history 18 years ago, fans dancing, jumping up-down & counting on no. of S/F & F milestones but who cares?? ...don't understand one simple thing. Every day is not Sunday. With legends (according to their fans) retiring very soon owe team back to associate level. These are Asian Big 3!!

  • Raki99 on March 20, 2014, 20:20 GMT

Wow, I still rememeber the games In the 90's and India never defeated Pakistan except once in a Blue moon they would win a game here and there. After that last ball six By miadad, The tide just changed and pakistan use to consistentely beat India. Also Pakistan had a great team back then, Bowlers Like waqar, wasim and even aqib javed were always good against india. Also They had a good batting anwar, sohail mallik and miadad they were all good batsman But then the The tide chnaged after that 2003 woldcup game and now its always fifty-fifty. Also India stoppen going to sharjah. This new breed of india players are not afraid anymore. I hope the best team wins Tommorow.

  • Adnan-Ahmed on March 20, 2014, 20:10 GMT

  • mzm149 on March 20, 2014, 19:38 GMT

I want to see Ashwin getting spanked once again. I want to see the recap of those two sixes but not so late in the innings.

Pakistan team predicted here doesn't make much sense. How can they drop Ahmed Shehzad unless he is injured, which he is clearly not. Sohail Tanvir should be dropped for Junaid Khan.

India will play Rahane and Mishra has no place in Dhoni XI.

    Pakistan team: 1. Shehzad 2. Kamran 3. Hafeez 4. Umar 5. Malik 6. Maqsood 7. Afridi 8. Bhatti 9. Tanvir 10. Gul 11. Ajmal

We shouldn't rely on Afridi. He is always a wild card, pun intended. Ahmed Shehzad is in form and should be played. SureTanvir can bat some but he is too erratic withthe ball and gives away too many easy runs, which we absolutely cannot afford. We should play Rehman instead, he is usually cheap and can bat too. Go Green!

  • ABHICA on March 20, 2014, 18:50 GMT

MSD's stubbornness to continue Rohit as opener can do away sometimes in ODI ,but not at all in T20, as Rohit takes tooooo long to settle in,which T20 doesnt allow..remember T20 2007, MSD opening with Y Pathan, playing his 1st match of the tournament,in the highest pressure situation ,that too as SEHWAG's replacement. Also he was allowed to go after the bowling straightway, hitting 1 six & 2 boundaries, putting PAK in surprise... one cant win T20 with defensive set of mind,to which MSD currently belongs..

If I were the captain then I will not have play Shoaib Malik because of recent form and that he haven't performed for a long time. I would have played Ahmad Shahzad because of his brilliant form recently and also Ahmad is a very compact player and open with Sharjeel. Also I would have played Talha instead of Bhatti bcse Talha have genuine pace and can be dangerous whereas we all know how expensive and ineffective Bhatti is apart from that one S.A game. I would also have played Babar instead of Tanvir if it is a spin friendly pitch. If Kamran plays then he should keep wickets instead of Umar bcse of his past W.K experience.

  • t20cric on March 20, 2014, 18:04 GMT

Both teams are pretty evenly balanced but the comparisons are poor. Ajmal vs. Ashwin is clearly Ajmal, comparing Ajmal with Mishra would have been better. Afridi vs. Dhoni is ussually Dhoni but when Afridi is good he's on fire. For the Pakistan team I think Ahmed MUST be in the team cuz you cant forget his near century in t20. We don't need Tanvir cuz Ajmal, Hafeez, Gul, Afridi, Bhatti & Malik (if needed) are enough for bowling 20 overs. I think Kamran, Sharjeel, Hafeez can make up the top 3 then Ahmed, U Akmal, Maqsood, Malik to make up the middle with bowling allrounders to finish in Bhatti & Afridi. As for team India I cant beleive there is so much options for no.7

  • on March 20, 2014, 18:01 GMT

It is very tough to predict which team of the two arch rivals will win the game. These sides are very good T20 teams but personally I think Team Pakistan is more balanced and better placed than the Indian side.Pakistan have very good all rounders suitable for this format of the game which gives the side depth in batting, depth in bowling having a balance between fast bowlers and spinners in the attack. India are a very good batting side but they have a tradition to play an extra batsman despite of strong batting line up and always play a bowler less despite of their relatively weaker bowling attack.Time will tell which team comes up victorious but on papers Pakistan is much better and I am hoping for their victory. Pakistan India matches are always tough and teams who could held their nerves in crunch time won matches,so Pak should play the most experienced players. My team includes; Shehzad K Akmal Hafeez Maqsood Afridi U Akmal Malik Bhatti/Tanvir Gul Ajmal Junaid(if fit) Best of luck

Rahane or Virat should open alongside Dhawan....Rohit is out of form & scores runs once in 100 matches & is selected again for next 299 matches

  • on March 20, 2014, 17:52 GMT

India will easily make it 9-0 tomorrow. Pakistan cannot win against India in world cups, and tomorrow also as usual India will win this match.

  • JoshFromJamRock on March 20, 2014, 17:49 GMT

Given the difficulty of the group it is safe to say that the team that loses this match will not advance to the semi-finals.

  • job_eapen on March 20, 2014, 17:48 GMT

I hope Dhoni is not going to play with the tested and failed lineup yet again...

Really hoping someone instead of Rohit to open along with Dhawan... due to Rohit's lack of ability to rotate the strike , it puts undue pressure on Dhawan to score more quickly and put his wicket at danger...!! hope Dhoni would try someone like Rahane, and try to fit Rohit in the middle somewhere...!!

My lineup would be something like :

Rahane, Dhawan, Kohli, Raina, Dhoni, Yuvraj, Jadeja, Binny/Rohit, Ashwin, Mishra, Shami/Bhuvi....!!

This way India can go in with a line up that have hitters down to no: 11... (hope Shami can hit quite a few biggies..!! and so does Mishra too...)

If not all of these , for the love of God, please change Rohit rom the opening position....!! MSD please do something about it......!!!!!!

  • SukuDXB on March 20, 2014, 17:48 GMT

Absolutely no chance for India as the worst opening performance by Rohith Sharma and Dhawan.. Why they are getting more chances especially Sharma? once in 15 games is not big deal..

i think pak should not play sharjeel n tanvir in game agnst india.both r not able to play thr role in team. shoaib malik also doesnt deserve a place in team as fawad is perfect allrounder to reolace malik.malik has not cricket left un him.. my playing xl is a.shahzad 2) kamran 3) hafeez 4) fawad alam 5) umer akmal 6) sohaib 7) afridi 8)bhatti 9) gul 10) ajmal 11) junaid khan.. this team can beat india

  • JontyG on March 20, 2014, 17:39 GMT

Pakistan is struggling to face fast bowling.. Bring in Aaron and Aaron has to raise to the occasion. Prove himself. Ashwin, Jaddu should keep the consistency in Economy and Strike rate. Shami to bowl his heart out. He is a good bowler.

Open with Rohit/Dhawan or Ajinkya/Dhawan, who ever it is, needs to make sure that the opening stand is a solid platform for Raina, Kohli, UV and MSD to blast away !

Confident that Team India will prove all its critics wrong tomorrow, as it always did. Pakistanis always crumble under pressure. Look at world cups since 1992.

    Jai Hooo !!!

  • KamranMehdi on March 20, 2014, 17:33 GMT

And why can't we play with Kamran Akmal and Sharjeel Khan as openers with Ahmed Shehzad comes at #3. They can drop Shoaib Malik because Pakistan has no issue in bowling department. Pak should think and plan to maintain run rate and to make sure they keep wickets in hand.

  • on March 20, 2014, 17:31 GMT

well pak-india match is always a close game, pakistani players are taylor made for t20 ,what pakistan lacks right now is one genuine fast bowler along with umar gul,i would suggest junaid khan is better option than sohail tanvir, pakistan definitely has a slight edge but the return of dhoni, raina and yuvi has equalized both team to great deal..lets enjoy the day !

  • IndianCoolGuy on March 20, 2014, 17:25 GMT

@: Coolcapricorn : Well said mate. Sachin tendulkar became a good opener because he was an excellent in picking up easy singles. Ganguly used to struggle to rotate strike. I don't understand why no one is telling Rohit to rotate the strike. Because of him not rotating the strike, Dhawan is also loosing the focus. Whats the point wasting 10 balls and hitting 2 boundaries? Non-Striker loose patience with his dots. Dhoni, Because of Rohit opening, Dhawan is loosing his game, and UN-necessarily it is putting pressure on middle order. Drop rohit and give chance to Rahane in power play. or if you decide not to drop Rohit, then ask Jadeja to open and put Rohit in middle some where. MSD, PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS, ROHIT IS NOT A NATURAL OPENER, WHAT IS THE POINT THINKING ABOUT PAST SUCCESS? OR DO YOU WORRY THAT ROHIT DO NOT HAVE A PLACE IF YOU DROP HIM FROM OPENING ?

  • KrikIndFan on March 20, 2014, 17:24 GMT

I'm taking a day off from work just for this, I bit almost all my nails couple of weeks ago during the Ind-Pak Asia cup match. Its true that it has lost its ugliness but the fans would still gets more exited for an old rivalry match than watching Ind v/s SL or Pak v/s Aus. India has regain its confidence with the last warm up match win against Eng and re-entry of Dhoni, Pakistan will be all pumped up since they won the last match.

  • Venkat_Gowrishankar on March 20, 2014, 17:12 GMT

MS Dhoni Vs Shahid Afridi, what a poor compariison.. One is match winner, the other has matches lost because of him. Man, poor comparison, you could have compared Jadeja with Afridi as both are allrounders and are explosive.

  • slackers11 on March 20, 2014, 17:04 GMT

Pakistan definitely has a edge over India when it comes to T20s, but if the Indian batsmen can come into some sort of form, India can beat Pakistan. This match should have been the opener of the tournament, somehow the qualifiers seem to have taken away the sheen from the tournament.

  • on March 20, 2014, 17:02 GMT

in indian side seventh place should be filled with varun aaron coz pakistani are having trouble against fast bowlers..and in pak side shoiab malik should be replaced with fawad alam..

  • on March 20, 2014, 16:59 GMT

I remember the times India-Pakistan matches were discussed with emotion. Now it's more sense and tactics. On this match though, I wonder why the writer has excluded Ahmed Shehzad from the XI. He is certainly more stable than Sharjeel Khan. Scored a 100 just 2 matches ago. As always I feel our batting is the main concern. All I wish for is that Shoaib Malik doesn't play. He is an average spinner at best and his strike rate isn't high enough to be a middle order finisher.

  • BigINDFan on March 20, 2014, 16:54 GMT

Neither of these two teams stand a chance of winning the WCT20. However one of these two teams stand a very good chance of making it to the semifinals. That team will be decided by the result of this first match. So MSD and Hafeez need to bring their best XI to the match and go on all out attack mode. The favorites for this year are Aus and WI both of them are in good form and are in this group.

ICC probably used their stupid ranking system to draw up the groups. They should swap England with WI to even up the groups. Ind Pak Aus Eng BD will be a perfect group and SL SA WI NZ IRE/ZIM will be a competitive group as well.

The only way Ind will move to the semis is to open with Rahane and Dhawan and play Rohit in the middle order. Go with 3 spinners and 1 fast bowler Shami/Bhuvi and let the part timers like Yuvi and Raina bowl 4 overs between them. My XI is

Rahane Dhawan Kohli Raina Rohit Yuvi MSD Jadeja Ashwin Mishra Shami/Bhuvi/Varun

Ashwin should open the bowling with Shami

  • DurtyWurk on March 20, 2014, 16:51 GMT

Pakistan.. I AM BEGGING YOU! Please don't play Sohail Tanvir. He's proven to be extremely expensive during the warm-up games and his batting isextremely overrated. Bhatti is a much better all-rounder. Play Shehzad in his place. Our starting 11 should be:

    1. Kamran Akmal 2. Sharjeel Khan 3. Ahmed Shehzad 4. Mohammed Hafeez (bowl) 5. Shoaib Maqsood 6. Umar Akmal 7. Shoaib Malik (bowl) 8. Shahid Afridi (bowl) 9. Bilawal Bhatti (bowl) 10. Umar Gul (bowl) 11. Saeed Ajmal (bowl)

This is an extremely strong batting lineup while retaining our bowling attack. For the love of god.. PLEASE DONT PLAY TANVIR!

  • Coolcapricorn on March 20, 2014, 16:47 GMT

Still to be convinced that Rohit is a good opener as he seems unable to rotate the strike by taking singles at the start of the innings to get him & the team going - be it a T20 or an ODI. Due to this, he often then plays a rash shot & gets out. Think he'll be far better off in the middle order with Rahane instead opening with Dhawan. Not sure too about Bhuvneshwar Kumar being in the team as without any conditions that assists his swing, his innocuous medium-pace can be cannon fodder for the big stroke makers in opposition teams. Although Mishra deserves to be in the team as he always looks impressive when given a chance, I guess MSD will choose his favourites Ashwin & Jadeja instead.

  • on March 20, 2014, 16:44 GMT

Team India Batting Line up Dhawan, Kholi, Raina, Rohith, Yuvi, Dhoni, Jadeja, Binny, Ashwin, Shami, Buvi.. Kholi Should open because he can be the only player with confidence at top.. Also well balanced left and right comb.

  • on March 20, 2014, 16:40 GMT

To all those who think India has strength in batting only are merely wrong, i mean they have spinners like Mishra who turns the ball pretty good, Ashwin is hell of a trickster too.. In recent matches against Pk we've seen their batting lineup fumbling.. Now talking of Pk.. well its the same case.. U rely on bowling and in the death overs they give away plenty of runs.. Yet they keep run rate to almost normal when on spin overs. And then their batting surprises the audience and everyones like WOAHH..

Point is.. both teams are balanced Its hard to predict who'l win.. Patriots wud definitely brag abt their teams win n bla bla bla I believe its anyones game

Let tomorrow be the better judge

  • IndianCoolGuy on March 20, 2014, 16:38 GMT

MSD, Please look at your opening pair. Do you think without good start with opening pair you could win the cup? Look at your wins in 2007 WC, and 2011 WC. Sehwag and Gambir has given good starts consistently. Recently 2013 Champions trophy at Eng, Rohit and Dhawan has given consistent good starts. Now the point is when Rohit is not doing well at opening then what is the point sending him opening? He is not a natural opener. He is not even trying for shots. He is a best fit at middle order. Many times he won for MI at middle order. Please accommodate place for him in the middle order. Please check this line up. 1.Dhawan 2.Jadeja 3.Kohli 4.Yuvi 5.Raina 6.Dhoni 7.Rohit 8.Ashwin 9.Mishra 10.Bhuvi 11. Shami. Here 4,5,7th positions can be altered depending on situations with Yuvi,Raina or Rohit. Jadeja can be a good try for opening as he is known for power hitting in power play. He can give good start at least 3 matches out of 5.

There is a big difference between Dhoni and Afridi. Dhoni will score 6 in 6 balls or 6 in 1 ball if needed whereas another man will score 6 in 1 ball (once in 100 matches), may be he is short of brain.

Seriously guys? was there really a thing about Friday and Pakistan? surprised to know that.

Past doesnt matter especially in t20. 1 player or small innnings from some 1 can change whole thing in couple of overs.

I think we fans and media have more hype than the players. Obviously a big game. 1st game in this event. and groups are tougher so no team would want to make mistakes. No margin of error this time.

India will be boosted by Raina, Yuvraj. dropped from odis but looked in good touch in warm ups. Mishra should play. he was the 1 who created problems in asia cup.

I think if kamran playing then he should be opening. Sharjeel is just a hitter like afridi. so i think they will need some stability with Ahmed. ahmed has good last 12-13 months. Malik's role is questionable but no other option in squad. Maqsood needs to improve his running. Gul was bowling good in warm ups. Bhatti should play.

Ahmed, Kamran, Hafeez, Maqsood, Malik, Umar, Afridi, Bhati, Gul, ajmal, Talha/tanvir.

  • on March 20, 2014, 15:59 GMT

All fans are seems to be following wrong track atall. We Indian fans rely more on result. If India is winning then all is well and when we starts loosing everything is bad. This is the story of Indian fans mentality. After brillient 2013 in 2014 we have lost so many matches. That is why we are critisising Indian team and as always Rohit Sharma is soft target. Same Rohit Dhavan opening pair who scored maximum 100 plus opening stands in 2013, after 11 ODIs in 2014, started rating worst opening pair. This is not good atall. Furstly we need to analise our defeats. All defeats in 2014 are not about failure in batting, but failure in bowling department abd specially poor fuekding. In SA in bith ODIs Rohit Dhavan faced target over 300. In NZ tour we lost both tests due to poor fielding. Williamsons got life on 39 in first test & Maccullum on 9 in second test. In Asia cup Sangakara & Maksud git life from Kartik and India lost both matches. These are the main reasons. Why to critisise Rohit ?

  • on March 20, 2014, 15:44 GMT

Hype is there for the big match but since it is the tournament starter so its not like usual indo-pak contest. Contest would have been much hotter if both teams have already played a couple of matches and it was a knock out match for both teams, tournament organizers should keep this thing in mind. I was looking at 50 over WC schedule and India-Pak there too is uselessly scheduled at very initial stages of tournament. India's best bet is to play mishra, as he is likely to trouble Pakistan. Playing Bhatti is a gamble and babar can be a better choice for Pak.

If kamran akmal has to open it would be sharjeel who would be left out. Ahmed was nt given a chance to bat in 1st warm up cuz he is already in scores. Sharjeel khan given chance to make a case for himself which he failed both times. Still u including him. I Guess pak team management is not as much dump as you are. And shaoib malik will nt play only for his india-slayiing capabiilities but he is the only one who gives some calmness to pak batting order at no. 5, if required, in current squad.

  • kr_kinshuk on March 20, 2014, 15:32 GMT

A t20 game is virtually impossible to call without a single ball having been bowled. Either side can win tomorrow, no matter what fans on either side would like to believe.

However, India's batting has looked shaky at the top in the recent past and Pakistan will hope to exploit that.

India, on the other hand, will hope for a repeat of the collapse that Pakistan suffered in its warm - up game against South Africa.

Btw, I don't think there can be tournament favourites in a format like this. Every edition of the T20 Wc has thrown up "surprise" winners. Be it "inexperienced" India, "volatile but peaking at the right time" Pakistan, "never won a WC" England, or a "dangerous and unpredictable" West Indies, the winners of this tournament have never truly been clear favourites.

So, I will just sit back and hope that the tournament produces fireworks and can provide us lots of entertainment.

  • on March 20, 2014, 15:09 GMT

Ajmal vs Ashwin is a no contest. Ajmal has been a proven performer while Ashwin is a better batsman than he is a bowler. Even with the recent results in favour of Pakistan, the match I believe is a 50-50. Dhoni, Yuvraj and Raina coming back to the team bring a lot of solidity to the middle order. Only if somebody had the vision to drop Rohit Sharma, instead we will have to resign ourselves watching him score 11 of 19 deliveries tomorrow before he gets out.

  • on March 20, 2014, 15:03 GMT

I am sure Dhoni will not change Indias opening pair for the most important match against Pakistan. There is no point in putting pressure on Rahane. He has not blaster batsman like Gayle or Afridi. Plust he too is not known for any big hitting. Experienced international attack can easily put him at one end to be blocked. On the other hand Rohit is on higher confidence level. Just few days back he scored rapid fifty against Pakistan only in Asia Cup. Its true in both warm up matches both Rohit & Dhavan failed. But these were just warm up matches. Last year before CT both too were failed in warm up matches. But as main matches started they played mejor role in Indias winning. At the sane time those players who performed brillentely in warm up matches in CT, they failed in main matches. So any failure in warm up matches doesnt reflect any class of a perticular player. Rohit can hit big sixes to any top level bowlers in the world. Remember his sixes against Gul and Junaid in Asia Cup. ATB

I still remember my dad not watching India vs Pak match on friday predicting Pak win even before match started and Pak never let him down.

Now back to this game .. I would like Kohli to open and Rohit at 5. It is a T20 and let your best batsman have a crack in first 6 overs and also Rohit is very good in finishing innings in 20 over cricket. My Indian XI : Kohli,Dhawan,Raina,Yuvraj,Rohit,Dhoni,Jaddu,Ashwin,Bhuvi,Shami and Aaron. Ball might swing under the lights and with dew around Aaron is better choice then Mishra.

Hoping to see India continue their legacy over Pakistan in Worldcups :)

The knowledge of the writer is limited and biased. It is an Indian version of the match and the team and does not reflect the real hype about the match. Since India is a weaker team in T20 this match has no hype???? Please dont misguide the people and the team selection committee by your one sided comments. Why have you missed Junaid Khan from the bowling line up. This guy eats Kohli. Ahmed Shehzad will play as is a better batsman than Sharjeel and also in form. Knowing Indias weakness Pak wil also play Talha the fast bowler.. BUT lets watch out this exciting game tomorrow. The cricket will be the winner...

As I said earlier the good thing in being in a group like this is one loss or even two or more really does not matter & you still have a chance because you know the winner may fail against the other teams whereas you can plan to win over those teams. In a less strong group if you lose to the other biggie in the group that's the end because other two teams are there just to make up the number. In this match I would say india's win depends on Dhoni's level of contribution to the match.

Indians find themselves in pool of death ,once more.Australia,Pakistan and even WI have better bowling attacks .However ,in T20 one can sail through with a weak attack if batsmen come good.Problem for India is ,as some one pointed out, both Rohit and Yuvraj dont merit a place in XI but would be making it any ways. Dhawan Kohli MSD trio would be overburdened and Raina can be destructive but not against quality bowling. What may work in Asian teams favour is pacers of England,SA ,Aus and NZL wont get much purchase from Bangladesh pitches. All in all Indians could make it to semis if they get past Pakistan. Can they?

Yes The Boom box is ready for friday opener. Now about team dew is major factor so I don't think any team will go for third spinner. Both teams are having two spinners (specialist) Ashwin & jadeja and Ajmal & Afridi. Options are widened for both teams with Yuvraj, Raina & Hafeez. I'm amazed not to see Junaid Khan in Pak's playing XI.

pak should bat first n thrash india by discipline bowling Attack...no other option

Paistan India Match will be Very intrusting. It should be in the middle of the tournament. Both of them the looser fan will not enjoy the remaining matches due to big loss

How are you replacing Kamran Akmal with Ahmad Shahzad? If Akmal will be in he will take Sharjeel's place, and in my opinion Malik has no place in the team.

in such short format of cricket all you need is a good batting so I believe India has an edge. You post 150 runs on the board and Pakistan's batting as usual will get nervous and will collapse.

    1) Sharjeel Khan 2) Kamran Akmal (WK / BAT) 3) Mohammad Hafeez (capt / Spin BW / BAT ) 4) Umar Akmal (BAT) 5) Sohaib Maqsood (BAT) 6) Shoaib Malik ( Spin BW / BAT ) 7) Shahid Afridi ( Spin BW / BAT ) 8) Bilawal Bhatti ( Fast BW / BAT ) 9) Umar Gul ( Fast BW ) 10) Saeed Ajmal ( Spin BW ) 11) Junaid Khan ( Fast BW )

I would bet on Pakistan simply because they have a better bowling line up and India has NOhit and ageing stars in their midst. I know people are pining for yuvraj to make a comeback-i feel his best days are behind him.
