Crowe: Conditions not to Australia's liking

Match facts

March 23, 2014, Mirpur
Start time 1530 (0930GMT)

Big Picture

This is where it all begins for Australia, the push for that elusive World T20 title. George Bailey's men enter this tournament with five wins from their past five games but those were all in vastly different conditions in Australia and South Africa. The slower pitches in Bangladesh will provide a new challenge, although the massive opening stand of 113 from eight overs between David Warner and Aaron Finch in the practice match against New Zealand in Fatullah was encouraging.

Pakistan's campaign started with a defeat at the hands of India on Friday and while one loss might not hurt their overall chances too much, two from two would make it difficult to fight back into the tournament. It was a lacklustre batting display that set Pakistan on the road to defeat and that is where they require a big improvement in this contest. If any team in world cricket is capable of following a shambles with a success two days later, it is Pakistan.

These teams have not met in a T20 since the group stage of the 2012 World T20 in Sri Lanka, when Pakistan cruised to victory thanks to their spinners. And that is the big danger for Australia once again. For all of the power in their batting line-up, most of their biggest hitters are happier when the ball comes on at pace than when dealing with tweakers with tough variations. And with India and West Indies also in this group, this match will be a pointer to how Australia might handle similar spin challenges later in the tournament.

Watch out for

David Warner's recent form across all formats is as imposing as any batsman in this tournament. In the ODIs against England in January he made 65, 18 and 71, then followed that in the South Africa Tests with 12, 115, 70, 66, 135 and 145. Then there was the small matter of 40 from 16 balls in the rain-shortened T20 in Durban. And to cap it off, his only warm-up in Bangladesh brought 65 from 26 deliveries against New Zealand. This is a man who is striking the ball as well, and as consistently, as he ever has. He just needs to make sure Saeed Ajmal and co do not get on top of him.

In 10 T20s against Australia, Saeed Ajmal has collected 18 wickets at 13.22 and has gone for five an over or less every time he has met them in Asia. In turning conditions Ajmal ties the Australians down; they cannot get him away and the pressure builds wickets. His doosra especially will cause some headaches for batsmen who have spent the summer dealing with more conventional spin.

Team news

Australia allrounder James Faulkner will miss the game, as he is yet to recover from a knee injury. It could mean that Daniel Christian retains the bowling allrounder spot.

Australia (possible) 1 Aaron Finch, 2 David Warner, 3 Shane Watson, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 George Bailey (capt), 6 Brad Hodge, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Daniel Christian, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 11 Brad Hogg

It was Pakistan's batting that let the side down in their loss to India and the only backup batsman in the squad is Sharjeel Khan. However, given that spin is likely to be their trump card against Australia, they may play two seamers rather than three and bring in the left-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar.

Pakistan (possible) 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Mohammad Hafeez (capt), 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Shahid Afridi, 7 Sohaib Maqsood, 8 Bilawal Bhatti/Zulfiqar Babar, 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Junaid Khan

Pitch and conditions

Spin played a key role in the first game at this venue, the Bangladesh victory over Afghanistan, and again in Friday's India-Pakistan match. Again the slow bowlers should have plenty to work with. However, the teams will have to keep an eye towards the skies; it rained in Dhaka on Saturday and more wet spells are forecast for Sunday afternoon.

Stats and Trivia

  • Australia and Pakistan have met in 11 T20s - Pakistan have won six, Australia four and there has been one tie, which Pakistan won in a Super Over

  • The Pakistan side features the three top wicket takers in T20 internationals: Saeed Ajmal (82), Umar Gul (75) and Shahid Afridi (73)

    Quotes

"These conditions - the ball turning - that is more suited to us against Australia and the other teams." Pakistan's captain Mohammad Hafeez after the loss to India

    • spinkingKK on March 23, 2014, 9:20 GMT

I believe Pakistan are going to win this one. My predictions so far has been all good. I backed India against Pakistan and NZ against England and SL against SA. I believe the conditions suit Pakistan and if they play the aggressive game, Aussies might lose this one. Australia got a good side. But, Faulkner will be missed in the late order. Pakistan should try to make use of all of their aggressive batsmen. It is a big sin if Afridi only gets to face last two or three overs. There is no point in keeping wickets in hand when all you have is a total of 20 overs and there are some 8 or 9 batsmen who can really improve your run rate.

Having Tanveer, Hafeez and Malik in your ideal teams is a big joke. These three are the biggest losers

    • on March 23, 2014, 8:51 GMT

Pakistan have to come up with better approach in all aspects. Their batting is exposed and failed to deliver. But the real dilemma which has emerged that Pakistan bowling is not effective which it used to be in old times. I hope Pakistan wont repeat same mistakes have been shown in India Pak match. Bilawal Bhutii needs grooming and Sohail Tanveer should be rested and must bring extra spinner in. Best of luck Pakistan

If Pakistan make through the semi finals it will be a miracle. You cannot and never back your good bowling if you don't have good fielding.

I am not at all worried about Pak. They learn from their mistakes and they will suely include 3rd spinner.Hard time for Australia!! hould be a cake walk for my brothers!!

    • rAs15 on March 23, 2014, 8:34 GMT

Pakistan has to play this match with a different mind set...knowing that Australia has a great side...shoaib malik has no place in the team and neither there is a place for sharjeel khan...however keeping the squad in mind...Pakistan should play with malik and send him at no.8.

    • vkumar_086 on March 23, 2014, 8:28 GMT

    • hellothereeveryone on March 23, 2014, 8:28 GMT

If Pak bat like they batted against India then they stand no chance to win any match in this tournament. A lot of improvement is needed and Pak need to bat as it is expected in T20 (8 or above runs per over at least)

    • Hubdar on March 23, 2014, 8:28 GMT

Be aggressive overcoming fielding and batting shortcomings, Pak has to win against Australia if they want to remain in the contest...... and In Sha Allah, they will.....

    • on March 23, 2014, 8:27 GMT

today, pakistan should give chance to Zulfiqar Babar instead of bilawal bhatti...he is awesome spinner.

    • on March 23, 2014, 8:26 GMT

Sohail tanveer Should play a part in playing XI expect of Junnaid khan and playing a extra spinner not a bad choice, yes`Its Zulafqar Babar Pakistan Top order have stunning combination, they just need to change their approach. Good Luck

I think Australia in this world cup don't stand any chance given that they do not play spin good. They are preety unlucky to be in a group where all other 4 sides have quality spinners and they are playing their matches in mirpur and not chittagong where pitches are very turning !!! BAD LUCK OZ's !!!! #goINDIA

    • Bdcricketdebator on March 23, 2014, 8:19 GMT

Australlia are clear favourite in this match.not only for their batting but also their mental toughness.if pakistan is to make impact in this match it will only be their spin.other than that aussie looks far stronger.

    • strykkr on March 23, 2014, 8:05 GMT

It will be a usual contest between a professional AUS team vs Uncertain BUT good bowling PAK team. I always believe, PAK matches are more decided in the bowling half. If they fail there, it is given that they stand any chance in the other half... they are as fragile in batting as any associate team in the world.... bound to come down like a pack of cards. Lets hope we get a good entertainment... I really miss Shoaib and Wasim Akram in PAK matches... they were a treat to watch... good luck PAK team.

I cannot see the reason, why Kamran Akmal and S Mailk palyed in the last match. The decsion was based on biased views, rather then any cricketing logic. The balance of the side is much better with Umar Akmal keeping, Sheerj opening, Maqsood moving up the order

    • on March 23, 2014, 7:47 GMT

On papers, Pakistan have a edge of their Spin bowlers which are quite consistent over the past history. Now they only need to improve in batting.I suggest Afridi should be promoted to 3,4 position.Junaid must be reolaced with Zulfiqar Babar.

    • RednWhiteArmy on March 23, 2014, 7:45 GMT

Looking forward to seeing Ajmal who is easily the highest quality player in the match. Pakistan, if they actually turn up mentally will cruise this one.

Are you serious? 22 runs of 15 balls is lot of dot balls? What about your captain who made 15 of 22 balls? What about Mr Malik? But they will never get the blame as you cannot see the culprit who is Hafeez

    • on March 23, 2014, 7:18 GMT

Hard luck for Pakistan, to face two great cricketing teams a row, Indian and Australia, I hope brave pakis will play well, specially they should bat well if they want to be remain in the competition. Wish all the best of my dear team, the Pakistan.

    • byc89 on March 23, 2014, 7:16 GMT

T-20 is a game in which any team can beat any other team. Pakistan is a strong team and their players just need to remain confident and play each shot and run between the wickets judiciously. The run-out of the previous match vs. India definitely will remembered for a long time. PK batsmen shall focus on making runs by not taking too many risks. PK's bowling is their stronger point. They did not allow India to run away with the match despite defending just 130. But for that catch dropped by Shahid afridi the match would have definitely been closer.

AUS team do have good players who can play on any pitch against any opposition. No one can take Aussie team lightly even in their dreams. They have a brilliant record of victories all over the world. Though the players are different, yet they are a highly formidable side. They are also known for their athletic fielding. They need to play Saeed ajmal carefully. He can prove to be a game changer as there will be no dew during the match time

    • bouncer709 on March 23, 2014, 7:16 GMT

First Moin Khan statement and then Hafeez statement to defeat Austrailia with spin clearly tells that they again want to score 130-140 and then leave it to spinners, I am sure they are not planning anything how to get runs against Austrailia, they are just thinking of how to bowl... common guys think some thing out of box, ask the batsmen to do some thing. Shoaib Malik strike rate 106, what he is doing in T20, better play Sharjeel, at least he can give you few quick runs.

    • Big-Dog on March 23, 2014, 7:14 GMT

I have no idea why Christian is even in this side. He brings nothing to the team. The loss of Faulkner will be significant. I'd say the odds are even for this game.

    • on March 23, 2014, 7:14 GMT

pak is going to win this match as they are in the great anger to lose to india in the last match plus, their spin bowling will be the mystery for aus, aus batsmen especially, warner, finch , mxwell, bailay , christian are very new to pak spin, i dont think if pak bats first and manages to score 150 or more, aus cant chase it, or if aus bats first, u cant see the slog as they are famous for. best of luck to both the teams.

    • Shouldas-Wouldas-Couldas on March 23, 2014, 7:13 GMT

D-Day ! Derailing "The Juggernaut" wont be easy. Pakistan will have to play to their full potential and bounce back from fiasco ( India match ). Hafeez and think tanks will have to make bold decisions. Pakistan can not afford to play UNFIT players e.g. Afridi and Umar Gul. Out of form Junaid should be replaced with Talha. Z. Babar can prove to be "the joker in the pack" ! Hafeez can put a spanner in the works by opening with Sharjeel and Kamran Akmal. 1) Sharjeel 2) Kamran Akmal 3) Hafeez 4) U. Akmal 5) Maqsood 6) A. Shehzad 7) Malik 8) Bhatti/S.Tanvir 9)Ajmal 10) Talha 11) Z. Babar ( Stagger the batting order as per situation ). Bowlers need to reminded to vary pace and bowl leg-stumpish or off side wide YORKERS. Positive/aggressive attitude from onset will be important. Good luck Pakistan, play hard, give it your best shot. Power to you !

    • on March 23, 2014, 7:12 GMT

Well, Pakistan must play the upcoming game against Aussies with a positive frame of mind and outlook, if they are aiming to win the game. Pakistan are no dearth of talent but positive attitude. Having been thrashed by India in all departments, Pakistan must no more be complacent about its dwindling bowling attack. Besides this, fitness problems continue to haunt Pakistan for majority of the players seem to be out of touch and suffer from fitness issues. Nevertheless, Pakistan being the most resilient team has the requisite capability to bounce back strongly setting aside all stigmas attached to them. No other game but the upcoming one would pave way for either bolstering the team's confidence in the case of win against the Aussies or showing them way out of the tournament. Shoaib Malik and Bilwal Bhatti must be replaced with Sharjeel Khan and Zulfiqar Babar, if Pakistan are to stay in the gala.

    • on March 23, 2014, 7:05 GMT

I wish pak realises the importance of sending afridi up the order and play fearless cricket...still back them for a solid performance. I still remember that they r dangerous when they r down...gud luck pak and most importantly drop umar gul

    • naumanlatif on March 23, 2014, 7:04 GMT

    • Cricket_Man on March 23, 2014, 6:37 GMT

James Muirhead is the guy I think Australia should play. I think he would be the man of the match if Australia play him. For Pakistan I would drop Malik and play Sharjeel instead because he is good against pace and Australia rely on pacers more. I hope that Umar Akmal bats at 4 and Maqsood at 5. Zulfiqar Babar should play in place of Umar Gul who just can't bend his back anymore.

    • webster.pk on March 23, 2014, 6:35 GMT

    • milepost on March 23, 2014, 6:25 GMT

@Kesav, you're questioning the Aussies onfield behaviour? That's pretty funny coming from you, I hope the umpires keep an eye on the ball when you bowl. The only test for Australia's batsmen against spin is how far they can smash the bowling into the stands.

    • blthndr on March 23, 2014, 6:22 GMT

Two groups are interesting ones....GRP-1 is pace dominated with a more pace assisted venue and GRP-2 is filled with spin heavy teams with spin friendly venue....Aus would be happy to be in GRP-1 bt i dont think other than aussies any other non asian team(except WI) would survive this group....they r one of the big hitters of the ball even if they r not the best players of spin bt their attacking approach always help them against spin and with this batting line up any thing possible....

    • love_pk on March 23, 2014, 6:20 GMT

Pak has a pretty good team in terms of overall resources but the main issue is the negative attitude. They looked under pressure against India right from the start which cost them the game. If Pakistan want to do well they have to play fearless and positive cricket otherwise they may not be able to reach even the semi finals.

    • SaugatAli on March 23, 2014, 6:18 GMT

Hello, i am saugat & i very much supporter of Pakistan. i had very much disappointed when they lost against india but i don't know why they are not batting comfortably against them that is the main point. According to the record yet they didn't defeat them even once in side of world cup match. I hope today they will perform well and beat Aus & they has to replace Malik by Sharjil khan because of he is a hard hitter.

    • 11kgm on March 23, 2014, 6:16 GMT

Hope Australia go for Bollinger over Christian. Christian has been cannon fodder off late. Hope Faulks is back soon

    • ZahoorRahman on March 23, 2014, 6:16 GMT

We are all aware of the facts when it comes to crunch time Pakistan produce a good result. Same do and die situation is here. Pakistan never play under pressure against Australia as in case of India. In the Asia cup Pakistan first match was with Sir Lanka which they lost but Pakistan qualify for the final and we expect the same situation here and want Pakistan India FINAL. Psychologically Pakistan has an edge by looking the past records between the two countries as Pakistan won 7 and lost 4.

    • lazyone on March 23, 2014, 6:14 GMT

Drop Kamran Akmal and bring in Sharjeel Khan. Send Afridi up the order. Good luck Pak. from Sri Lanka

Conditions are said to be favorable toward spin and this could potentially slow down Australia's pace- setters at the top of the order. Furthermore, Ajmal has a terrific record against Australia in T20I cricket. Pakistan need to field well and bat the in there natural way, which is attacking. Pakistan give whatever they have got as this is somehow a knockout match. Fast bowlers wont be that effective and this will help Pakistan batsmen. Hafeez would need to attack with spin at the start. Umer Akmal is injured so my team would be: Shazad,Sharjeel,Kamran,Hafeez,Malik,Shoaib,Afridi,Bilawal,Gull,Ajmal,Babr

Bowlers like junaid and talha can not be successfull in T20 format specialy in subcontinent conditions cuz they don't have variations in pace and length (M. Asif was also same) . Team management has to understand this quickly. So they hav to go with specialist sohail tanvir. 1.Sharjeel/Karman 2. Shehzad 3. Hafeez 4. Umar 5. Malik 6. Maqsood 7. Afridi 8. Tanvir 9. Babar 10. Pakistan should beet Australia and give them a shock at their tournament opener.

Even through Aussies are strong , we never like their attitude and on field behavior. They should be sent out of this tournament as early as possible.

    • on March 23, 2014, 5:46 GMT

As a Pakistan fan I am feeling that this time Pakistan is going to get out from the WT20 at the group stage first time. Their bowlers are up to mark but batting very very poor. For the T20s you must have an attacking batting line.. Yes. Pakistan has an attacking batting line but that is only on sheet. Players are not firing..

    • gr8-cricket on March 23, 2014, 5:45 GMT

if kamran Akmal and Shoaib Malik play, PAK will definitely sink.

and by the way what is Afridi doing in the team being unfit.

Good luck PAK with imminent defeat today, with these useless players, defeat will be the only outcome.

PAK will not make it to super 10.

I am from Nepal. And so so so much fan of Pakistan. Each time Pak lost the game my heart broke. Since the captaincy of Misbah, there is no one consistent batsman beside himself and how unlucky pak is. Every time he plays his innings, pak has lost most the game. But still this team is strong enough to beat Australia. Its time to take revenge with Aus. Last time in 2010 they were almost in finals but Hussey ruined the party. All the best Pak

    • on March 23, 2014, 4:57 GMT

Zulfiqar Baber must be brought in in place of Junaid Khan who usually eats at over 8 an over. And Sharjeel must be included in place of useless indian shoaib malik.

And @Muneeb You're forgetting that the bowler against Bangladesh was Abdur Rahman and not Zulfiqar BAber. Baber is very accurate and will trouble Watson, Warner and Bailey

    • on March 23, 2014, 4:38 GMT

Pakistan has an advantage with their spinning attack but it will depend on the toss. Pakistan would need to score around the 170 mark to give the bowlers some room to take wickets regardless of boundaries. As Spin is Pakistan's strong suit it will be better if Zulfiqar Babar is introduced and bring in 2 out of the 4 pacers which I believe should be Talha and Umar Gul. Although Umar Gul is not in the same touch as he was before and Junaid and Bilawal still need some control in their bowling. The Captain will be concerned whether Babar would repeat that horrific over of 0-0-8-0 but I think its was just one of those days.

      Winning Combination:

Kamran Akmal, Ahmed Shehzad, Mohammad Hafeez, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, Sohaib Maqsood, Zulfiqar Babar, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Muhammad Talha

Pakistan needs to adjust their attitude a little and bring in the fighting spirit they had shown in the Asia Cup. Good Luck Pakistan - May the odds be ever in your favor :P

change of batting style would ruin Pak team completely. Since beginning of T20 Pak was a natural talent, but sorry Misbah; U R good player not a good captain. Players are mold to defend (TUK TUK) while most of them are attacking batsman. Sharjeel is an example, check his debut matches and rest... Shahzad is another infected of TUK TUK virus. Until Pakistan doesn't change their strategy anyone can beat them. There is nothing to loose for Pakistan now. Do or Die. Best of Luck my my heart Pakistan. Happy Pakistan Day

    • Ozcricketwriter on March 23, 2014, 2:19 GMT

I changed my mind. Hogg shouldn't play. Put White in the team instead. White is in too good form to miss out and I think we have enough bowling options to not need to play a spinner for the sake of a spinner. Australia: 1 Aaron Finch, 2 David Warner, 3 Shane Watson, 4 Cameron White, 5 Brad Hodge, 6 George Bailey, 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Brad Haddin (wk), 9 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Doug Bollinger

Australia's depth in T20 is more with there batting rather than there bowling. Make no mistake, Johnson and Faulkner are HUGE loses for Australia. Pakistan will either make 200 or be bowled out for 70, let's see which Pakistan turns up.

Any team that has players not selected due to merit like kamran and shoaib does not deserve to win a single game, overlooking deserving players who are languishing is not fair, the painful thing is that I feel this format should be the most suited to pakistani talent and genius, the rankings also suggests this Hopefully this debacle with change some things

Dont see Pak batting put up with the Aus attack.Even struggled v Ind-even though these are spinning pitches.Together with haphazard fielding, loose cricket all round they dont stand much chance.Only hope-spinners.But Aussies would've done 'h/work' am sure!

If Pakistan need to get their hands on the WC trophy ..Please check this thread ....

      1. You dont need 2 seamers 2. Bring Exta Spinner for the seamer 3. Get Rid of Shoaib Malik & Bring Anwar Ali

      Best Playing 11 /Balanced

      1. Hafeez 2. Shahzad 3. Afridi 4. Akmal 5. Umar Akmal 6. Bilawal 7. Anwar 8. Maqsood 9. Gul 10. Ajmal 11. Babar

SO you will have 3 seamers (Gul/Ali/Bhatti Spin : Ajmal / Afridi / Hafeez / Babar

Anwar Ali is way better than Shoaib Malik ......

    • disco_bob on March 23, 2014, 0:36 GMT

Australia batting lineup looks frightening, I don't think spin will be a problem because if only two of our top 6 latch onto the ball they can take the game away on their own. We won't be afraid of spin and playing a team full of spinners may work to our advantage. It's about time Watto actually made a difference for a change seeing as this is his element.

    • rjibran on March 23, 2014, 0:28 GMT

Pakistan should include Sharjeel Khan in place of Shehzad or Malik.. Sharjeel is a hard hitter of the ball and can give us a good start with bunch of runs on board very quickly.. Also, Zulfiqar Babar should be playing in place of Bilawal Bhatti.. My playing eleven for tomorrow:

      1. Sharjeel 2. Kamran 3. Hafeez 4. Umar 5. Malik 6. Sohaib 7. Afridi 8. Ajmal 9. Gul 10. Junaid 11. Babar

    • Kak-mal_Khan on March 23, 2014, 0:17 GMT

As a Pakistan supporter, I want the team to be out of this tournament - why? The reason being we continue to bring back the worst wicketkeeper at international level. We leave a good limited overs batsman in Fawad Alam at home, and replace him with Shoaib Malik, wasted talent in my view. So please I plead for this Pakistan team to fail so that the great straight talking Rashid Latif can bring in the new true faces of Pakistan cricket, based on cricketing ability and not who knows who. I am surprised that Imran Farhat was not drafted back in for this tournament.

    • Rayyan_RA16 on March 23, 2014, 0:15 GMT

This should be what Pakistan play tomorrow- 1. Shehzad 2.Kamran 3. Hafeez 4.Shoaib 5.Umar 6.Maqsood 7.Afridi(should bat higher up if there is less than 7 overs) 8.Bilawal/Tanvir 9. Gul 10. Ajmal(don't bring him on too early like last match) 11. Zulfiqar Babar, Shehzad can't be slow in the beginning, Hafeez must bat sensibly not play slow and then slog, Malik should come at 4 so they have someone to accumulate while Akmal and Maqsood can play their natural game. Pakistan must play as a team and play well in pressure and then they should come back and win

    • Matt.au on March 23, 2014, 0:15 GMT

@ mzm149 "Australia should play Bollinger instead of Christian."

I agree that Bollinger should play though I would leave Coulter-Nile out. I'm not overly impressed with Coulter-Niles' form.

Christian may be a canny bowler in these conditions with less pace for the Pakistani batsmen to work with.

Christian is a powerful hitter of the ball when on song and it makes for a very strong Australian batting lineup if he is included.

I also think Hodge is in form, is consistant and should play.

Let's accept the fact that Sri Lanka is the only Test nation in Asia who can compete at world level. Having said that apart from Lions all are associates. Pakistan is mostly hyped team which occasionally wins but only in Dubai. We did show masterclass to SAF who thrashed other Asian within 75 runs where we posted highest total. SAFA also whitewashed other Asian country earlier. But against us they look pretty ordinary. I remember how Hussey thrashed Ajmal in last T20 w/c. Oh dear!! Now they (Aus) have 9 power hitters out of 11.

    • on March 22, 2014, 22:02 GMT

I don't understand why some people still consider Umar Gul in the team, the bowler who gives 30 scores in four overs how on the earth deserves a place in the team and it is not just in one game his record of last four years is the same. People need to think what is the best for Pakistan team at the moment, that is about being fair and supportive to your country and team. Umar Gul not is not a good bowler anymore and his last four years record proves that. If it was just one match or series then we could say he is out form but his speed, line and length everthing is gone he is not a threat to tail Enders anymore he gives away too many runs. Currently I don't see any other bowler who is threat to oppositions Except Saeed Ajmal, all the teams are practicing how to play Saeed Ajmal and see off his four overs and then take on other bowlers. We have a captain who has technique problem. If Pakistan wants to stay in the tournament, UGul, Malik, and Tanveer must be kept out of the team.

    • Izzmail55 on March 22, 2014, 22:01 GMT

I hope it doesn't rain. Also for Pakistan to win they need to get at least 180runs. Go Green!!!!

    • kc69 on March 22, 2014, 21:54 GMT

I agree that facing Ajmal will be the biggest test for Aus but having said that no other spinner is really looking good.Again toss will be super crucial and if Pak bats second they are likely to win bit is Aus manage to deny Ajmal any wickets then it will be their game. This is a do or die for Pak a loss here could mean an early exit.Best of luck to both.

    • victortrumpet on March 22, 2014, 21:37 GMT

The games between Australia and Pakistan at these sorts of tournaments are always competitive. Pakistan play a mercurial brand that can win trophies or devolve into a squabbling mess of amateurism. Australia has probably the best batting lineup and will be hard to keep below 150, but the Pakistani bowlers may be tricky for the Aussies to negotiate, and the absence of Faulkner detracts significantly from their bowling threat. This is Australia's best lineup other than Muirhead in for Christian. I think Christian is a better T20 bowler than Watson, but Muirhead can spin it more than anyone since Murali. Hopefully Bailey will be astute enough to give Maxwell more of the all-rounders overs than Watson, who these days lumbers in like social cricketer and gets successively creamed to the boundary. I like Bailey as a batsman, but not so much as a captain, I think Clarke is a lot more astute. Hopefully Warner and Finch will put on a show!

    • cricraz on March 22, 2014, 20:58 GMT

Pakistan is definitely one of the favorites to win this T20 tournament. This is coming from an Indian!!. They have an extremely balanced team with the best spinners and good fast bowlers. DISCOUNT THE LOSS AGAINST INDIA. The loss against India is due to nerves and enormous pressure back in Pakistan. The players get chastised every time they play India and no wonder they play "tight" when they play India. Without Pressure, Pakistan can play freely and hold most teams to below 150 especially on the pitches in Dhaka. They need to drop Shoaib Malik and Bhatti and use Sharjeel and Zulfiqar Babar instead. Remember they lost their match in Australia to India and came back to win the World cup! This is from a guy who is an Ardent Indian supporter!! Put Kamran and Sharjeel in as openers and Shehzad 1 down and Umar akmal 2 down. Use Afridi as floating batsman to up the ante!!

Australia will thrash Pakistan. If they bat first it will be a 160 plus total and if they bowl first they will restrict pakistan under 140. As long as we have this biggest parchee shoaib malik we wont win any matches. This man has not perform in the last 3-4 years and still get chance in the team after every successful tour. No point talking about Abdul Razaq, Mr Hafeez and the management has already destroyed his career, if he was playing I am sure he would have been the most exciting one day and T20 all rounder of the current time. We Pakistanis have a problem of self credulity, just after winning 2 close matches in Asia cup all the players, team management and the nation started claiming to be the best team in the world. No one realised how bad our fielding and bowling is that even team like Bangladesh scored 325 runs against them and so called bad indian bowlers ( which isnt true ) limited them to 130. We need serious talent hunt as currently there is no young talented player inPak

    • SachinRao on March 22, 2014, 20:05 GMT

Australia for me is the favourite for the cup. Aus: I think Faulkner's injury is a big blow as Dan Christian has looked out of sorts. They would be better off with Doug or Muirhead. It will be a tough call between Hodge and White. They have a massive batting line-up and Aaron Finch seems to me as the ace in the pack. Pak: There seems to be something amiss in the team as they seemed to have a lack of intensity and cohesion against India. I think its a no brainer that they play Zulfiqar Babbar in place of Bhatti. They would need to regroup and focus if they are to make an impact in the rest of the match.

    • on March 22, 2014, 19:56 GMT

If shoaib Malik and Kamran akmal will be in the side tomorrow then RIP team Pakistan.

    • 9tek on March 22, 2014, 19:56 GMT

With this team the only way our boys can win against the Ozzys if 03 changes are made and the team should be as follows: 1-Kamran Akmal 2-Sharjeel Khan 3-Ahmed Shahzad 4-Hafeez 5-S.Maqsood 6-Umer Akmal 7-Afridi 8-B.Bhatti 9-Z.Babar 10-M.Talha 11-S.Ajmal

I am confident that the above is the best combo which can deliver. I am sure Rashid Latif will be the best C.Selector since Amir Sohail and players who should have been in this squad like Anwar Ali, Harris Sohail, Hammad Azam, Fawad Alam and The new Super Quick kid in local cricket nowadays who is FAST so if you read it Mr. PCB Chairman just GET LOST we dont need a Comedian Like you. Good Luck to all the readers of Cricinfo World over I hope everyone Enjoys T20 2014 in East Pakistan ohhhh Bangladesh !!!!

Pakistan - Bat First, Score 150+ and the game is there for the taking as Aussies are vulnerable against quality Spin of Ajmal & Co. Wish PAK all da best..!! From SL..!!

    • warraich101 on March 22, 2014, 19:50 GMT

In response of Ahsan ul haq comments, Those unwanted players as mentioned Ç( kamran, shoib malik, except sharjeel,) . are Fast friends of hafeez and Abul Razzaq is not . However, i would love pak to win tom but for a long run sake of pak cricket , lost is better in all four matches and Operation clean up is required , Selection is always on Friend basis despite you are Unfit or out of form, . now only hope new Chief Rashid is left. good luck to pak Team.

    • JAHID_OMAR on March 22, 2014, 19:49 GMT

Good Luck Pakistan..!!! Come hard at Aussies..You can do it..!! From Sri Lanka.

    • El_Toro_Loco on March 22, 2014, 19:49 GMT

All Pakistani fans should embrace the fact that Pakistan fast bowling prowess is over since Shoaib Akhtar retired & Amir's ban. There is no emerging supreme fast bowler who can take 3~4 wickets in almost every match regardless of which it is played. Pakistan should go for all-spin attack no fast bowlers. Ciao

    • huffpost on March 22, 2014, 19:36 GMT

if aussies play ajmal well, they will win..simple as that...

    • on March 22, 2014, 19:12 GMT

Players like abdul razaq , imran nazir and few others were better option considering current players selection for t20. Of-course you shouldn't change whole team in one day but you did had the better selections option to change one or two players with better alternatives or include in squad the least. You need power hitters in t20 and i ask is ahmad shehzad a power hitter or shoaib malik ?. Team selection is poor for both batting and bowling. Umar Gul hasn't performed once after his return to the team therefore has not justified his return and what's the reason for kamran akmal's return? why dont we just call this "international" team the personal property of some rich person and further the players who cheat and get paid for heinous crimes , they just forget they are hired by a "country" team and not by betting agents to play cricket and if they think they are too good and can do what they will then go home or go work as floor cleaner's no need for you in team or management! "no joke"

    • drnaveed on March 22, 2014, 19:05 GMT

well ,it seems that with this bowling combination ,batsmen selection ,and poor fielding efforts , we will not be able to reach even the semi-final stage , winning the world cup T-20 seems to be a dream .bowling used to be our strong point , but we recently have lost matches of 20 overs and 50 overs , only because our bowlers failed with the ball.

    • Cpt.Meanster on March 22, 2014, 19:02 GMT

You can never really write off an Aussie team in an ICC event. They have the pedigree and history to back them. However, I don't think Pakistan will be anywhere as nervous as they were against India. This is a must win game for PAK and I hope they come good. As an Indian supporter, I would always back a fellow Asian team to do well. So I hope PAK doesn't disappoint me and all their supporters. At the same time, good luck to Australia as well. They have some quality players but it will be interesting to see how they go against spin and Ajmal in particular.

    • AravindxD on March 22, 2014, 19:00 GMT

Australia will probably decimate Pakistan especially when they are in this kind of form LOL.

    • PakSelectorsRbad on March 22, 2014, 18:57 GMT

Not sure why Pakistani fan ( So called) are blaming Gul and Junaid. No team with 130 total runs will win against Australia. Be sincere when calling your self a Pakistani fan...

    • on March 22, 2014, 18:55 GMT

      pakistan will win

    • on March 22, 2014, 18:55 GMT

As long as Malik is not playing, Pak will have good chances of winning tomorrow.

    • chandi1991m on March 22, 2014, 18:55 GMT

will be easy win fr pak. gud luck pak!! from SL

    • PakSelectorsRbad on March 22, 2014, 18:54 GMT

This team will not even make total of 100 runs. Shoiab, Akmals and Hafeez will know what real cricket is and ofcourse bad wicket keeper and bad feilder will add to the Pakistan team. Hafeez will drop 4 catches out of every 10..Guess what is future of Pakistan cricket. On top of it people are talking about adding Sohail Tanveer in place of Junaid..Not even prayers will work for Pakistan with this level of Pakistani cricket.

    • Hamdard786 on March 22, 2014, 18:49 GMT

Pakistan is the only team which always let down the the Ausies. They always do wel against world top team & its do die situation. They should drop malik & junaid and include sharjeel & baber. Key plyer wil be hafeez & afridi. All the very best

    • mzm149 on March 22, 2014, 18:46 GMT

Australia should play Bollinger instead of Christian.

      1. Warner 2. Finch 3. Watson 4. Bailey 5. Maxwell 6. Hodge/White 7. Haddin 8. Starc 9. Coulter-Nile 10. Bollinger 11. Hogg

They can use White as a leg spinner in case there is much turn. They can also include Muirhead in place of a pacer as well if needed. Pakistan struggles against leg spinners ;)

Pakistan should play Zulfiqar Babar. If Afridi is not 100% he should sit out but I don't think so it will happen. Gul should be rested too. He is completely out of sorts.

      1. Kamran 2. Shehzad 3. Hafeez 4. Akmal 5. Malik 6. Maqsood 7. Afridi/Bhatti 8. Tanvir 9. Babar 10. Ajmal 11. Junaid/Gul

    • on March 22, 2014, 18:45 GMT

i think pakistani batting line up has 2 3 unwanted player(kamran, shoib malik, sharjeel) and even fast bowling department is off color,so pakistan doesnt stand good chances in the tournamnet, really underprepared team fot this cup!as a pakistani i am disappointed, lets see what happen tomorrow against aussies

    • on March 22, 2014, 18:43 GMT

      Australia will win this one!

    • on March 22, 2014, 18:35 GMT

Aussies start as the favorite's for this match. Finch and Warner are at their destructive best. Then comes Watson who on his day can sent any bowling lineup into shreds and pieces. Then their middle order with Maxwell, Bailey, Hodge and Haddin are destructive.

The only concern or question that I have is will they be able to flare up against the spinners in the Pakistan side , the likes of Ajmal, Hafeez, Afridi, and Babar (if he is included)...

Pakistan, is a team of talented individuals, who need to perform as a team if they need to pull of a victory. Afridi (he is the key for Pak) with the amount of experience he has must come somewhere like at the position of 3 or 4 (I don't feel its good to let him open the innings) so that he can deliver.

As always in the case of Pakistan matches,it will be a match between Pak bowlers and opposition batsmen, here its Australia.

As a neutral I expect we have an exciting match at our hands..!! Play well both teams .. Let the best team win..!!

    • on March 22, 2014, 18:30 GMT

i am fromi India but i am also supporting Pak. guys keep calm ,it is just one bad game .junaid khan is a dream bowler for any team.kamran is good enough to play as a specialist batsman .players just need to clear their mind and execute their plan .they have more firepower than aussies .go guys ..

    • mzm149 on March 22, 2014, 18:29 GMT

Lets play Sharjeel Khan tomorrow and expose him in front of good Australian bowling. That seems the only way to get rid of him.

    • AHKhan121 on March 22, 2014, 18:29 GMT

Shezad needs to be dropped cant score runs and ran Kamran out. Therefore Afridi should open instead, he is scoring heavy runs and isnt taking wicket so should not bowl. Zulfiqar Babar should come in and bat at 8 while bhatti moves upto 7. 6 is too low for maqsood to make an impact, he has all the shots in the book and is batting down at 6? now... onto SHOAIB MALIK. He is useless, maybe a good fielder, but cant score quickly, he just someone who can hold up one end while someone like afridi, akmal, maqsood take take on the bowling. He should be down at 6. 1. Afridi 2. Kamran 3. Hafeez 4. Umar 5. Maqsood 6. Malik 7. Bhatti 8. Babar 9. Gul 10. Ajmal 11. Junaid

    • on March 22, 2014, 18:24 GMT

Pakistan need to get to a situation where Australia can't afford to block Ajmal which is what india did. So either they should bowl first or atleast score 160.

    • on March 22, 2014, 18:19 GMT

I don't understand why some people want Umar Gul to be in Squad. I would say he was the cause of loosing match to India. Umar Gul is out of touch for last four years. I wonder how selectors select him for important tournaments samer hung is for Sohail Tanveer and Shoaib Malik all these are Safarshi. Pakistan needs to change its bowling coach because since Pakistan got this bowling coach Pakistan's fast bowling attach is not threatening anymore. I don't understand why Misbah is not in the T20 squad when his average is highest among pakistani players (37), strike rate is over 100, has ability to play big shots, I think it is totally unfair.

    • on March 22, 2014, 18:13 GMT

I think Shoaib Malik must b dropped,Otherise he has to make minimum.30 runs in his position, with the strike rate minimum 125.Zulifqar Baber Must give a chance instead of Balawal Bhatti or Junaid khan,b caz we need more spinner 2 morrow.Myplaying 11 is Sharjeel-Ahmad shezad-Professor-Kamran akmal-umar akmal-Shahid afridi-shoib Maqsood-junaid khan-umer gul-saeed ajmal-zulifqal babar-BUT any how SHOAIB MALIK must not play he is so Useless.

    • dmqi on March 22, 2014, 18:02 GMT

I hope Australia can play Pak spin and survives. A team with unwanted players in the team ( Malik, Kamran) and a poor captain does not deserve to win. Hafiz and company should fly back and practice with 2nd tier teams first. There they belong. Ausis has 80% chance to win.

    • on March 22, 2014, 17:58 GMT

      @rubic, agreed dear.

    • on March 22, 2014, 17:55 GMT

It is indeed a big challenge for pakistan to step in the ground and perform from the word go but this team is capable of it especially if they start well they might build on that confidence.

    • Lakpj on March 22, 2014, 17:53 GMT

I still think Aus bowling lineup could be their problem. Other than Stark and to some extent Watson others are either inexperienced at this level or could go for runs. So like India, Aus batsmen might have to do a cleanup job for their bowlers at some stage of this tournament. But with Pakistan you never know what will happen.

    • on March 22, 2014, 17:50 GMT

What pakistan ex crickters and media are talking about good bowling attack of pakistan. I think it is weakest even of uae bowling. If pakistan team wana go further in the tournament it must drop umar gul, afridi, junaid, shoaib malik and bring rest of the squad members who did not play in the first match.

    • shahnbej on March 22, 2014, 17:46 GMT

Hafiz must take responsibility because he was main player for present team selection.

    • Rubic on March 22, 2014, 17:45 GMT

Any team with Hafiz as captain, Kamran as keeper and Shoib Malik as batsman DOES NOT deserve to win...

    • on March 22, 2014, 17:41 GMT

Pakistan needs to drop Shaoaib Malik, bring back Sharjeel khan. Shoaib Malik always play for cementing his position and cost the game. Since Hafeez, Afridi are two playing as all-rounders there is no place for Shoaib Malik

    • on March 22, 2014, 17:35 GMT

Pakistan should play more spinners , team does not need mediocre pacemen in this t20 format where their pace is so easy to flick and score , if it was someone like Aamir or Asif yes then definitely but not with Umar gul or Junaid. Also the way Afridi batted he should come one down or 2 down , if he plays with this backing and restraint, he is a timer and sighter of the ball at par with the best of the world's batsmen.

    • hasanjawaid on March 22, 2014, 17:34 GMT

We Pakistanis tend to fantasize things too much about our team. If we look at the facts and statistics, no Pakistani player other than Saeed Ajmal, Mohd Hafeez and Shahid Afridi in the current T20 squad holds any significant position in the first top ten players in any kind of cricketing format. If we look at the results and performance of - Umar Gul, Junaid and Bilawal Bhatti - they have been pretty flat, expensive and ineffective in all kinds of formats in the recent series lacking seam, swing and penetration. They perhaps they need to go back to Pakistan A and polish their skills. Likewise, Shahid Afridi, Hafeez and Ajmal have been equally expensive and ineffective in the recent games. Personally speaking, I don't think Pakistan stands any chance in the upcoming games because we just don't have T20Is or Twenty Twenty players like Razzaq, Younis, Salman Butt, Fawad Alam and Misbah in the team. God only knows what got S Malik and K Akmal selected into the squad.

    • t20cric on March 22, 2014, 17:27 GMT

To win Pakistan must play to their strengths & decrease their weaknesses. I think Malik needs to be dropped so that Sharjeel can come in as opener. That way Kamran & Sharjeel can open & have a left-right combo with Hafeez & Shehzad at 3 & 4. Afridi can come in to hit the ball when 2-3 overs are left to give a good boost. In bowling I think Junaid can be dropped for Babar to have 16 possible overs.

The team should be: 1. Kamran Akmal, 2. Sharjeel Khan, 3. Mohammad Hafeez, 4. Ahmed Shehzad, 5. Umar Akmal, 6. Sohaib Maqsood, 7. Shahid Afridi, 8. Bilawal Bhatti, 9. Umar Gul, 10. Saeed Ajmal, 11. Zulfiqar Babar

This team has batting til 8 (but Gul, Ajmal & Babar can slog if they have to) & 4 quality spinners. I think this is probably the best team Pakistan can make to exploit Australia's spin weakness.

    • on March 22, 2014, 17:23 GMT

Do and die for pakistan when he win he in stay in tournament but loose he is out. Good luck for our team pakistan

    • on March 22, 2014, 17:23 GMT

dont know why people are still hopeful, our batting performance against bowling attack which is largely considered to be weak, was totally abyss and some are still dreaming to perform better against number 1 bowling attack of the world. anyways ... Happy dreaming..

    • on March 22, 2014, 17:17 GMT

Hafeez gonna be statement tomorrow, " batting needs improvement, boys are not performing well, we need to improve our batting."

    • imad_lala on March 22, 2014, 17:02 GMT

Hard time for pakistan team, loss against india team is always not forgotten which will bring pak team down in their moral. But don't worry pakistan team have the ability to come back on winning track.they did it many times.

    • TheProfPak on March 22, 2014, 17:01 GMT

Why Shoib Malik? What PCB is trying to make out of tried and dusted players? If they play Sharjeel and he fails, even then he will have nobody else to blame and Pakistan will be happy to discard him. But if he get success, he's a long future ahead. What Malik will offer even if he is successful (which IMO is highly unlikely). God bless Pakistan Cricket.

    • on March 22, 2014, 16:58 GMT

I think Pak Selector's has made a biggest mistake by dropping Raza Hasan and Haris Sohail. Raza's performance in 2012 T20 WC was brilliant. He is the best T20 bowler who not only take wickets as well as restricts runs. And Haris Sohail is the most consistent batsman in Pak Domestic Season.

    • on March 22, 2014, 16:57 GMT

    • on March 22, 2014, 16:51 GMT

Just look at Warner's stance, and composure. Oozing with confidence and looking to have a perfect balance in his body and foot-work. Pakistan batsmen can't even stand like him. Talk about winning the game from them.

    • on March 22, 2014, 16:50 GMT

Everyone blaming Pakistan bowling but actual problem is batting if there no runs on board than how it possible to create pressure by bowlers.and pressure is key to getting wickets. Pakistan should set a small target for batsmen like 20 overs divided by 4 and set that small target for batsmen and don't leave a massive target to Afridy. Every batsmen must play according to plan include Hafiz.

V bad selection from Pakistani selectors, they sent 4 fast bowlers in Bang !!!Cant understand, no replacement in middle order, They choose inexperience Babar on Abdur Rahman, why? Bc of Hafeez Ego Abdul Razak is out of team, He is T20 match winner, In this T20 WC Pak team is weaker than last T20 WC. Ahmed Shazad is not in a mood for runs,He played v bad shot in last match, Afridi is not 100% FIT, He should not play but who will replace him?? Hafeez is not a good Captain.

    • on March 22, 2014, 16:36 GMT

One thing I dont understand, if batting is problem for Pakistan then why it is playing with 7 bowlers? Why dont it strengthen its batting by bringing Sharjeel back in the side and go with 5 specialist bowlers?

    • on March 22, 2014, 16:31 GMT

Why Shoaib Malik in Pakistan T20 squad. ..I cant understand. ..can u please explain....

    • shahnbej on March 22, 2014, 16:30 GMT

I think Pakistan selection is wrong, if you bring players like Kamran, Malik they are playing for them-self and not for team same is true for Hafiz, who is not a good captain because he is not leading team from front. And I don't blame them because it is human nature but selector should know......

    • on March 22, 2014, 16:27 GMT

Faulkner and Johnson are huge losses. Starc, Coulter-Nile, Watson and Hogg still gives a decent attack. Stil, we cant afford to carry a passenger in Christian. He has time an again proven his incomptence @ international level. I'm not the biggest fan of Big doug either - but i'd take him any day over Dan!

Having Hodge and Bailey in the middle gives me plenty of confidence against the spin trio of Pakistan. If the top three can get off to a big start then I think the rest will follow. Expecting big things from Starc with the ball but a little concerned with Hogg's form, hopefully we can bowl first before the dew comes in... Pakistan's bowling loos good but India seemed to handle them with ease so I'm not really sure where they are up to.. Pakistan's batting looks a little thin to me.

    • on March 22, 2014, 15:54 GMT

I am agree with Amir Khan Gul is a useless bowler now days even Junaid Khan is a waste inclusion for the T20 wc. I am wondering why Abdul Rahman not in the squad.

    • ramz30380 on March 22, 2014, 15:39 GMT

Apt title once again Cricinfo! It will be a good test for the Aussies who are up against wht i believe is the best spin trio in the tournament - Ajmal, Afridi & Hafeez!

If the batsmen & fielders support Pakistan's bowlers - they shud pull it thru... but if Watto gets going and destroys the bowling - there wont be much to do for Pakistan!

Apart from Watson, u dont have many players in tht squad who can take on the spinners....

    • on March 22, 2014, 15:38 GMT

In this group u can afford to lose one or two matches as all best teams of T20 but u can't afford to lost match the way pak did beoz I reckon it will decide semi finalist on net run rate.

    • ahmednaveed on March 22, 2014, 14:49 GMT

Afridi should be utilized between over 11-15 for batting regardless of batting order/number . Shoab Mailk should not be selected for next matches -Pakistan needs bowlers with brain and Batsman with courage , what I have seen , Bowlers are not bowling according to Pitch conditions and not targeting Batsman's Weekest areas , This type of slow batting Pitches they should learn bowling from Malinga - In the fielding Player are Saving their bodies from injuries rather than try for catches ,looks like their aims are not to win the matches but keep themselves in the playing 11 . Team Pakistan can win all Matches but needs to be more Aggressive , attacking and well planned against their opponent ,definitely selection and batting order is as well much important to improve .

    • Ozcricketwriter on March 22, 2014, 14:48 GMT

I seriously doubt that Dan Christian will play. I think more likely Australia will go with Doug Bollinger and try to keep Pakistan down to a very low score. Christian isn't batting or bowling particularly well right now and his ability to contain isn't likely to be very useful at the moment.

Australia should win this one easily but with Pakistan you never know what you are going to get. I feel that Shahid Afridi is the key to Pakistan's chance of success. Pakistan need to send him in to open the batting and then hope beyond hope that it pays off. A 20 ball century will give Pakistan every chance of victory. Anything less than that and Australia should win.

    • on March 22, 2014, 14:47 GMT

Good positive attitude from Hafeez and company. Wished Pakistan could win against India but hope that Pakistan can overtake Australia and make their place in the semis. If spinners execute the plans, it should be an easy one for Pakistan.

    • on March 22, 2014, 14:39 GMT

Great match I predict even hotter than Pakistan vs India. I predict Pakistan to come out victorious

    • on March 22, 2014, 14:38 GMT

I do not see Pak beating any team with such a pathetic batting as well as bowling. Wrong selection of squad and team is costing Pak and also the approach by Captain. Pak should have included Umar Amin and Imran Nazir in the squad. Anyway they should Play Sharjeel and Z. Babar instead of Shezad(who is a slow starter) and JUNAID.

    • on March 22, 2014, 14:35 GMT

Pakistan must Drop Ahmed Shahzad & Umer Gul and bring Shrjeel & Zulfiqar. Because Ahmed is just playing for himself every time not for the team. he is looking very selfish batsman. He waste too many devilries. And Umar Gul No pace, No Variety, No Yorkers, Totaly Useless.

Put afridi up in order , Asap replace shoaib with sharjeel, I was hearing about replacement of sharjeel with shahzad stupid experts can't u see shoaib Malik don't remember when was last time he performed

    • Grasshoppper on March 22, 2014, 14:34 GMT

I think they should be getting rid of shehzad in t20I as he wants to first build up then try to hit the gaps.........but you need someone like Sharjeel to get a good start.......its risky but thats what it is all about!!! Promote Afridi sometimes earlier in the innings....2-3 overs r not enough for this kind of slogger!!! Good Luck to Pakistan agst Aussies!! :)

    • Saadcricketlover on March 22, 2014, 14:34 GMT

Please don't bring in zulfiqar babar.

    • on March 22, 2014, 14:31 GMT

Send afridi up in order its a do or die format and plz don't medialize him all have to tone quickly from odi to t20 format no need to waste an over to set start from beginning if can't know that ur not t20 player .For God sake y is shoaib Malik there replace him with sharjeel .and junaid with zulfiqar .

    • on March 22, 2014, 14:22 GMT

Pakistan selection is bloddy soo pooor.. how the helll can you put malik for t20.??? get him out and bring Sharjeel..They were so many other options like Nazir, Razzaq, Raza hasan etc.. but unfortunetly they were not picked up.. Other problem pak have is the slow run rate you are playing t not test cricket where u need to face 10-20 delieveries to settle down. Look at sa ánd sri lanka today.. Australia is looking solid though

    • on March 22, 2014, 14:11 GMT

Zimbabwe were the first to use spinners extensively in T20..Ray Price one of the T20 bowlers ever

Pakistan should play zulfikar made error against India India by playing three fast bowlers

    • Zahidsaltin on March 22, 2014, 13:51 GMT

Pakistan should play Sohail Tanveer instead of Junaid, and Zulfiqar replacing Bhatti. Play Sharjeel and bring Kamran down the order at 6.

Sharjeel, Shehzad, Hafeez, Sohaib, Umar Akmal, Kamran Akmal, Afridi, Sohail Tanveer, Zulfiqar, Umar Gul, Ajmal

    • Zahidsaltin on March 22, 2014, 13:44 GMT

PAKISTAN should learn not to slow down the scoring when a wicket falls. Hafeez is a major culprit and has been so in many matches where they expect the tail enders to score at 15 an over to compensate. Learn from Sirilanka who didn't lose the momentum even when two of their wicket had already fallen. Sohaib needs to come at no 4 as he might be the best player of fast bowling and has a decent RR.

    • on March 22, 2014, 13:41 GMT

Pakistan batting line up should be ahmed shehzad.kamran akmal, umar akmal, sohaib maqsood, shoaib malik, sharjeel khan,m hafeez, shahid afridi,m talha, saeed ajmal, junaid khan/zulfuqar babar Shoaib malik inclusion is only satisfied if he is used in bowling as well.there is no point in playing bilalwal bhatti or umar gul or sohail tanvir and one down position should be occupied by the best batsman in the side.m hafeez should come down the order.he consumes too many deliveries and puts the whole team under pressure

    • on March 22, 2014, 13:28 GMT

With this form Pakistan might loose against Bangladesh with bilawal shoaib maqsood malik in the middle making no sense at all. ..

    • siddhartha87 on March 22, 2014, 13:13 GMT

should be an interesting match. Australia are 2nd best team in sub continent. They won world cups, champions trophy that held here. Also they are dominating all subcontinent teams except INDIA in subcontinent in past 15 years or so. Hogg has a very good record in sub continents.Should be an easy win for Australia if Ajmal does not do something special.

    • alipk52 on March 22, 2014, 13:13 GMT

The lack of one spinner that's Zulfiqar Babar, has really hurted us big time in the last game, selection of Bilawal bhatti and Shoaib Malik is real failure, they still keep giving them chances after chances, this will definitely hurting Pakistan campaign already, and I would be surprised if they advance over group matches.

    • ICCexpert.... on March 22, 2014, 13:10 GMT

I want to tell you guys a big secret. To keep a permanent place for Malik in this team the team management has selected no other middle order batsmen for this t20 WC. If Shahzad fails Sharjeel can replace him, but if Malik fails there is no one. Can you imagine what kind of approach has Malik got in the selection panel ? Please write about this and expose these selectors.

    • on March 22, 2014, 12:53 GMT

Why is kamran akmal and Malik back in the team. They played icc ODI and did jack all and were pathetic. After that trophy, without them, Pak have played ODI and t20 without them and won most rather than lost like they did in champions trophy with these two jokers.

Are they back in the team to throw matches for the bookies? KAMMY couldn't catch a cold, but let's have him as a keeper, shall we. After this tournament these two won't be in the team until the next tournament.

No disrespect to ind, but only Pak can make their bowlers look like world class. Absolute disgrace.

    • 4_Best_Cricket on March 22, 2014, 12:24 GMT

Can someone please tell pakistani players to play 'fearless' cricket? Why are you panicking? 160-170 is a competitive total in T-20. Come out and play aggressively and sensibly.

    • Khans_word on March 22, 2014, 12:21 GMT

Pakistan should bank on the spinners all the way!

Australia are too tuned into pace that it will be a mistake to go in with more than 2 pacers. Load the team with 4-5 spinners and choke the opposition.

Spinners: Ajmal, Hafeez, Afridi, Babar, Malik Pace: Gul + Bilawil

Gul has started to bowl with some accuracy and Billawal doubles as an allrounder. Babar was expensive in the warm-ups, which is a worry but I can see him taking wickets and he is also an allrounder,

Big issue: Why hasn't Malik bowled? With the experience he has, its astonishing! If you don't try then you never know.

A change in strategy could be the way change fortunes.

My team (from the unfortunate selection our PCB has given us:)

Pakistan 1 Kamran Akmal (wk), 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Mohammad Hafeez (capt), 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Shahid Afridi, 7 Sohaib Maqsood, 8 Bilawal Bhatti 9. Zulfiqar Babar, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Saeed Ajmal,

***Fawad Alam was in a purple patch. sorely missed!

    • on March 22, 2014, 11:52 GMT

What I seen last night, I strongly believe that T20, 2014 is not for us. We should try to improve Sharjeel, Maqsood, Umar and Bhatti for next tournament. We need complete revamp to our coaching panel (Need Specialized, modern and professional coaches). We need Steve Wagh/Gilchrist for batting coach, Waqar as bowling coach, fountain as fielding coach and language interpreter. Need Inzamam, Akhter, Azhar Mahmood and Yousuf as selectors. Latif as chief selectors. Abbas as a media manger.

    • on March 22, 2014, 10:55 GMT

this will be a day game so no dew factor. aus is in good form and their hitters are in good touch. pak will have to bowl well to pull this off and also have to bat well.

they were totally nervous in last game and looked lost . need some mental strength to compete.

batting was too poor in 1st game but only back up batsman is sharjeel khan. that tells the story of selection. your batting is weak and you took just 1 extra batsman.

but who will they drop, is a big question. i dont think they will change much in batting.

both gul and junaid were expensive. and against aus , they may also play zulfiqar baber as well so 1 of fast bowlers or bhatti may sit out.

no margin of error left for pak in tough group have to be positive and at best.

    • Stark62 on March 22, 2014, 10:52 GMT

Hafeez needs to stamp his authority on the team and drop Malik! Malik has averaged 18 with a SR of 97 in T20's, since Jan 2010 and that tells us, he is a huge liability and out of form. Pak had a young squad against the Windies in WI's and won the series 2-0, coincidence?

I would definitely bring in Zulfiqar for Juniad and then, Malik for Sharjeel (if Hafeez is brave enough).

Then, Pak must open with Sharjeel and Kamran because Shezhad is way too cautious upfront and we lose monemtum, just look at the way SL put the Saffers under pressure.

Batting order should be: 1. Sharjeel 2. Kamran 3. Hafeez 4. Maqsood 5. Shezhad (He can play the rebuilder role) and 6. UA

    • on March 22, 2014, 10:38 GMT

    • on March 22, 2014, 10:19 GMT

They have starc, coulter-nile, Hogg,Watson, and Christian, along with hodge's part-time. Taking in Maxwell is not a necessity. However, he is a spinner, and spinners are key in the sub-continent. I suggest they try White for starc. Coulter-Nile has the variations, but starc is a bit too fast for the pitches in Bangladesh. Australia batting is already strong, but they seem slightly inconsistent. White can also roll his arm over at times. Four seamers are too many for a sub-continent pitch. Why not bring in another spinner as well?

    • Morfi on March 22, 2014, 10:05 GMT

If Pakistan are to win, they definitely need to attack from the word go - with spinners. There is no point in presenting Umar Gul to the likes of Warner and Finch. So definitely, Hafeez, Ajmal, Babar, Afridi should bowl 16 overs. Maybe back them up with Malik with 1 or 2.There is no point in playing Malik if he doesnt bowl. If he and Sohaib Maqsood bowl 2 each, Pakistan can bowl 20 overs of spin.

Trouble is, there is no batsman in the ranks other than Sharjeel. I would bring him in for Malik any day and play Kamran at 3. Pakistan team should be:

Sharjeel, Shehzad, K-Akmal, Hafeez, U-Akmal, Sohaib, Afridi, Bhatti, Ajmal, Babar, Junaid. (If Malik must play, drop Junaid)

    • on March 22, 2014, 10:01 GMT

Sarjeel should be in the playing XI. He could come in at 8, that is where he could play all his strokes, and he'll likely come in between the 17-18th over, if he bats at that spot.

Ahmed Shehzad is taking to many balls to score, not taking the singles. He's the reason, that Kami got run out, and nearly ean him self out, the ball after.

Pakistan, if they get a opening stand of 40-60, inside the powerplay, they'll have a good platform, so they can get to 170-180 which with Pakistan bowling attack, a target they can defend for sure, like we saw, Hafeez, Ajmal, Afrdi, slowed down India yesterday.

We should start with (in the PP) Hafeez 3 Overs

      Afridi 2 Overs

      Ajmal 1 Over

then let, Junaid, and gul, bowl 2 over each.

At the half way stage Bring Afridi, bring him for one, Ajmal for one, then let Junaid, finish, and let Hafeez, and afridi finish, and Gul and Ajmal, finish of the innings.

      Come on Pakistan!!!!!!!

    • 3ddy on March 22, 2014, 10:00 GMT

well tbh , what i think of our team is , with a player like hafeez at no3 there is just no hope for any solid batting performance , shahzad is just bad at taking singles he would just stop stop stop then slog one to get stumped or caught, send sohaib at no3 pls and hafeez is worth of no 6 spot, i was shocked to see how pakistan batted vs India the score after 18 overs was = 102/4 cmon this is not 50 over game , you need to score runs to win and even extra vs a batting lineup like india but it seemed batsman didnt care enough or showed responsiblity.

    • Jimmyrob83 on March 22, 2014, 9:56 GMT

Australia will thrash Pakistan easily. Maxwell will scare the life out of Ajmal, he has smashed him whenever they have met.

    • on March 22, 2014, 9:46 GMT

I hope Australia bowl Pak out for 70 with Hafeez for zero and then chase the score in 6 overs, it's very much a possibility as Pak can easily replicate their pathetic batting again and again.

    • dunger.bob on March 22, 2014, 9:45 GMT

Brad Hogg is wily old customer with a totally wicked wrong-un. He's a 50 over WC winner and handles pressure like most people handle breakfast. He's also fitter than any 43 year old has a right to be. .. Young Muirhead seems to have a 30 y.o head on his 20 y.o body. He keeps his cool and can spin the ball a long, long way. .. Glenn Maxwell has improved a great deal over the last 18 months or so and is a very handy part-timer. .. Hodge can bowl a few annoying little darts.

We haven't got the best spinners in the tournament but they're not the worst either. We'll do Ok in the spin dept. despite what the experts believe. Don't write off our pace men either. Starc is going to tear the place up, mark my words.

    • on March 22, 2014, 9:21 GMT

yes spin will be a test but you know the batting of pakistan will not score more than 130 and defending this is impossible for any attack even the spin of Pakistan

Make no mistake - Oz is one of the most dangerous teams on paper. Likes of Bailey,Warner,Finch,Maxwell can take any bowling attack apart but at the same time the game is not played on paper.Actual conditions will favour teams having Good spinners & good players of spin. So the match is going to be between Pak's bowling Vs Oz's batting.Oz looking very balance on paper but one point of concern for them is lack of high quality spin bowler to use these pitches At the same time Pak has to overcome thrashing received by India & have to pull their socks to bat well & put good total on scoreboard to defend.

@ xtrafalgarx on (March 22, 2014, 8:16 GMT) maybe spin will not be as big a factor as people say, but if it is Pakistan have the best! so you should bowl first and know your chase no need swinging for 180 - 200 when in fact you only need 140. I'm not convinced that spin will be as big a factor against the Australian batters as everyone things it will be. Warner is a good player of it, Watson isn't bad, Bailey is good, Hodge is good and Maxwell and Finch have the power to overcome it.

Ajmal's class might halt the Aussies, but we will have to wait and see.

    • batman_gothamcity on March 22, 2014, 8:15 GMT

Losing out James is a blow as he can be a lethal all rounder . On this spinning track Watson , Warner ,Bailey should be the key against Ajmal and Hafeez. Pacers our batsman can easily take care . Aussies should win and carry forward their winning record if they do not allow Pak spinners to do major damage . Our fielding will give a extra cushion of 15-20 runs .Cmon Aussies get the T20 WC

Being a day game (so natural pitch with spin) if Australia win the toss they must bowl first, with Pakistan scoring 71 in practice and 130 for real Australia must test that batting, I don't think they want to be swinging to set a target against Aimal and co.
