Electric upstarts take aim at giants

Big Picture

If the adage "the bigger they are, the harder they fall" has any merit, Netherlands will know no.1-ranked Sri Lanka is the Mohammad Irfan of their group. Having wangled an electric surprise to barge into the Super 10s, Netherlands now take aim at the shins of giants. If they can strike a forceful enough blow over the next nine days, they might create the sort of upset that energises the tournament by placing relevance on every result. The first phase of the tournament had spawned considerable buzz around the less fancied teams in world cricket, and as the sole Associate representative in the main draw, Netherlands will not want to squander public goodwill with meek showings.

What makes this particular match a less likely candidate for an upset than others in the group, however, is not only Sri Lanka's T20 aptitude, but their general skill at putting weaker teams away. Over the years, they have revelled in crushing Associates. Much of this is to do with the unorthodoxy of their attack. South Africa had found Lasith Malinga perplexing enough, but they had faced him in a limited-overs series in Sri Lanka eight months ago. Most Netherlands batsmen will never have faced the likes of Malinga or Ajantha Mendis - if he plays - in their lives.

Sri Lanka's batsmen will not allow their standards to subside either. After his tour of Bangladesh, Kumar Sangakkara could pen the manual on bashing weaker attacks, and Mahela Jayawardene has not historically allowed inexperienced bowlers considerable leeway either. The Netherlands bowlers will also have to formulate a strategy to counter Kusal Perera's unique approach.

If Sri Lanka have the parts of their T20 machine humming, Netherlands will likely await their first victory over a Test side in this tournament, but if the breakneck chase against Ireland proved anything, Netherlands will not baulk at attempting the improbable.

In the spotlight

Netherlands' batting had mostly been about Tom Cooper and Stephan Myburgh in the group stage, but against Ireland, wicketkeeper-batsman Wesley Barresi had played a crucial hand, walloping 40 not out from 22 to send his team into raptures. Formerly a first-class cricketer in South Africa, Barresi has lately only played competitive cricket for Netherlands, and if his team are to challenge some of the bigger sides, less well-known players like Barresi must make impactful contributions.

Tillakaratne Dilshan arrived in Bangladesh with a cloud over his fitness, but after three mediocre innings - including in the two warm-ups - it is his form that is the bigger concern. On Saturday, Dilshan fell in familiar fashion: swiping across the line to let a straight ball through his defences. He might see the next match as an opportunity to rebound, against a friendlier attack, but Lahiru Thirimanne awaits a game in the dugout.

Pitch and conditions

The Chittagong pitch has often been slow and low, but on Saturday, the surface was not given to turn, rewarding the seamers instead. On the eve of the match the track appeared to have a tinge of green, but that may be shaved off on match-day, and in any case, the New Zealand v South Africa match will have preceded it.

Teams news

Seam bowler Logan van Beek is yet to contribute meaningfully with the ball to Netherlands' campaign, and he may be under pressure from right-armer Tom Heggelman. Elsewhere, they may not want to change the XI that brought that famous Sylhet win.

Netherlands (probable) 1 Michael Swart, 2 Stephan Myburgh, 3 Wesley Barresi (wk), 4 Peter Borren (capt), 5 Tom Cooper, 6 Ben Cooper, 7 Mudassar Bukhari, 8 Logan van Beek, 9 Timm van der Gugten, 10 Pieter Seelaar, 11 Ahsan Malik

News from the Sri Lanka camp is that Kusal Perera suffered a minor concussion after being hit in the head by a Dale Steyn delivery in the last match, but captain Chandimal has since said he is expected to play on Monday. They may consider bringing in Rangana Herath in for Ajantha Mendis, after Mendis had a poor outing against South Africa

Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Mahela Jayawardene, 4 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 5. Dinesh Chandimal (capt), 6. Angelo Mathews, 7. Thisara Perera, 8. Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Sachithra Senanayake, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Ajantha Mendis/Rangana Herath

Stats and trivia

  • Sri Lanka have now won 13 matches on the trot, across all formats
  • Tom Cooper is the tournament's highest scorer with 151 from three innings

Quotes

"It has sunk in. It was a euphoric evening. We were on a good adrenalin high but now we have a job to do."
Netherlands captain Peter Borren is not satisfied with merely making the Super 10s

"In this format of the game, any team can do well on their day and create major upsets. I watched that match between Ireland and Netherlands. Netherlands played some really good cricket in that game."

They are on top of their game and currently are favourites to lift this cup so you really need to stop giving such biased comments and give others a chance to point at you. and Mr Facebook user just above Ismail, your comment only tells about yourself and it is not a reflection of anyone else. well we are ready to this one as well. SL with utmost comfort after defeating SA but not relaxed as have a long journey ahead . Netherland with best possible moral state after that win . So the game is on . I want SL management to give strict advice to Dilshan to come form . Thisara in bowling . they are crucial parts of system and SL need them to come good before next games . judging the pitch from first game (NZ vs SA) it s a good one for batting . good luck SL .

Today is the battle of minnows, and guess what Netherland is going to WIN. Insha Allah, give the over rated SL a BIG Defeat. Pak is the best team in Asia, followed by India, Bangladesh & SL in that order

Mendis should play... he is a match winner and in the Asia cup he was in great form..... Then I cant understand why people want to Tisara not playing... He has done well every time he has given a chance and we need his big hitting in the later part of the innings... If some one has to go out its Chandimal and since he is the captain that is not going to happen.... Seekuge in for Chandimal will be great....

  • AyazJ on March 24, 2014, 8:54 GMT

The only issue SL had was that they batting lacked depth. With young guns performing when Mahela and Sanga are not they are the most balanced side in this tournament.

Mendis dropped - u kidding? He will get most wickets in the innings if he comes to bowl before Slinga! People who have not seen him will struggle for sure!

  • on March 24, 2014, 8:31 GMT

@Mohammed-Ismail, r u referring to the same oh-so overrated team that schooled Pak in the Asia cup final, after already defeating them in the opening match of the same tournament. So if SL are overrated, then what are Pak? Please keep ur unnecesarry comments to yourself, they are really not needed ,Inshallah, SL will win with flying colors...

  • on March 24, 2014, 8:27 GMT

SL is a balanced and methodical team. They are steady and dedicated. SL also plans well. They always form a team along the lines that worked for them in 1996 under the shrewd Arjuna. They try to groom hitters at the top, get bowlers who are different and tough to read. Now they have a bonus - all rounders Matthews and Perera. Also they try to get a few world-class batsmen in the middle order. Cricket is a sport they can compete in. All the best to SL. They should rope in Murali to guide their spinners like they are using Vass for pace bowlers.

  • Manik_mia on March 24, 2014, 8:25 GMT

SL is a good team. Also a lucky one. PAK, IND and AUS are in a different team. They got 2 of the bottom teams in their group. As per the ICC ranking ENG and NZ are just above Ireland. Also none of the teams are Spin friendly.

So SL will go to semi and get the real competition from either IND or PAK or AUS.

  • on March 24, 2014, 8:22 GMT

Better to replace Thisara Perera by Seekkuge Prasanna since the wickets are very slow.

  • on March 24, 2014, 8:03 GMT

As a Pakistani, I do want Sri Lanka to win the cup - if Pakistan doesn't. More importantly because of Sangakkar's retirement in the game, as he is one of my all time fav batsman. Most of the Pakistanis also take SL as their 2nd team.

But Netherlands impressed me greatly in their match against Ireland. So in my heart, I'm also rooting for the underdogs a bit. I think being a neutral is the only option I have.

  • aslamf on March 24, 2014, 8:02 GMT

To Mr. Mohamed Ismael. You must be one of the most naive individuals , Sri Lankas record in T20 supports the rankings.... We are the Asian champions..Out of the Four World T20's held so far SL are finalist in two and semi finalist in one... Insha Allah Sri Lanka will be World Champions this time.

  • on March 24, 2014, 7:58 GMT

Netherland will play 'DO OR DIE' game today, thats the they are intention. So,my advice is need more carefulness in SL players (all three department) However, SL confidence level is high like the sky

  • on March 24, 2014, 7:58 GMT

    mohammed-ismail SL is no Pakistan...

  • on March 24, 2014, 7:51 GMT

chandimal is a good cricketer bt these days everyone keep eye on him b coz of his bad run with bat.keep faith on him guys may b he will bounce back soon as he can.and we cant say that sri lanka over-rated as num 1 in this format.they did well all the time that they played 20 -20 s.look back and see, apart from 2007 20-20 world cup they reached atleast semi finals in every 20- 20 world cup.two times runner up.if they win all these world cups,no country will come to play with lankans.so they r never over -rated.

  • Ultimate_Cricket on March 24, 2014, 7:47 GMT

@Anoop331- i agree with your sentiment friend but as with any teams fans, we also have our share of those who get overexcited and dont connect their brains before they use the keyboard. i am glad that you.dont let the minority ruin your viewson our team..you are right about the rankings, they dont matter when it comes to a world tournament , they just give a glimpse of the teams normal ability..

  • mohammed-ismail on March 24, 2014, 7:32 GMT

the most overrated team right now is Sri Lanka, Netherlands is going to give them a shock defeat today. Mark my words. Inshaallah This is going to happen today.

  • on March 24, 2014, 7:21 GMT

  • malind on March 24, 2014, 7:20 GMT

For all those people who say drop chandimal consider this.. since he was given the captaincy he has won around 7 matches lost 3 ( I am not 100% sure on the stats). In middle of big tournament like this changing the captaincy is insensible specially when we are winning. Yes chandimals batting is poor but so is dilshan, thisara, etc. I say stick with chandimal, if you really want change captancy should have done that before we started this competition. in cricket luck matters & chandimal have some luck as a captain...

  • on March 24, 2014, 7:19 GMT

Sri Lanka is the ONLY team in the WORLD who were able to hold on to their # 01 ranking from previous a WC to the next WC. YES they were the # 01 Ranked T 20 side in the world even before the last T20 WC and they are STILL the # 01 after playing 30 plus games... Now that is a GREAT achievement which no other team in the world was able to achieve...They should go all out and thrash Holland today....

  • TZ9383 on March 24, 2014, 7:14 GMT

I wish today Dilshan, Mendis and Thisara show they are colours. If we wont to win this t20 world cup We wont perform this 3 players good luck Sri Lanka

  • anoop3301 on March 24, 2014, 7:13 GMT

@Vikum72: Simple Logic. You can add point 6. Sri Lanka are yet to win T20 World Cup. Here again, I am not saying that they will not win this world cup. They are good enough to win so are other teams like Ind, Pak, Aus. To put a team as favorites in a T20 global tournament just because they are No. 1 in the format is misleading. One of the comments in this forum says that Netherlands will be humiliated. Don't you think that that is arrogance from SL fans point of view ? Till SL win T20 World Cup, they will be an over-rated side for me who could not peak at the right time despite a no. of attempts. Again, I won't be surprised if they win this World Cup in which case I will come here and congratulate them. Till then, keeping bashing me :)

  • mohammed-ismail on March 24, 2014, 6:25 GMT

Today Netherlands is going to WIN, they have to tackle just one bowler - Malinga, others sre very mediocre. Inshaallah!! Netherlands will give an upset to Sri Lanka. Infact the SL is overrated. A fan from Pakistan

  • on March 24, 2014, 6:18 GMT

Many are talking about passengers. So where does chandimal belong?????? Isnt he a passenger also??? Mathews has enough capability to captain T20 than chandimal. Yet selectors carry this passengerwith team as a captain. No doubt he is a very good fielder. Fielding alone will not qualify to be in the team.

  • NextSana on March 24, 2014, 6:12 GMT

Mendis has to play against Dutch. He can cause problems to newer team might as well take 5 or 6 wickets in this match. So we have to bat first so Kusal and crew can score big and then Mendis can run through the dutch side so we can get a higher net run rate and top our group.

  • Lankamata on March 24, 2014, 6:09 GMT

Dutch team unstoppable against Irish hope to see a good fight against Lankans to justify their place in the super 10. Lankans need to attack with spin at least 3 spinners mandatory given Lasit,Mattiwes, Tissara take care the pace attack. If not today 3 spinners will definitely help when playing with test sides even against south Africa would have easily won if sikuruge were there and

"Chandimal should be dropped no argument on that............ "

    My selection1 Tirimanna 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Mahela 4 Sangakkara (wk), 5. Prassanna 6. Angelo Mathews(capt),, 7. Thisara, 8. Herath, 9 Sachithra 10 Lasith, 11 Ajantha Mendis

Dilshan must be dropped. Why not " rest" Chandimal for once? Mahela is good for finals! Thirimanne, Priyanjan must come in. By Playing Dilshan he will only ruin his own image just as Chandimals stands today. Its strange why teh slectors still play Chandimal. Probably he will get a 50 in one of the last matches and then continue to be in the T20 side again!! The best T20 side in the world cant have " passengers "in the team. Dilshan, Mahela and Chandimal, please step down

  • on March 24, 2014, 5:35 GMT

  • on March 24, 2014, 3:49 GMT

SL can't afford to keep an out of form and injured Dilshan in the side. Dilshan's lack of contribution just puts too much pressure on young Kusal. Though Mendis did really well in the Asia Cup, he has just been way too expensive in the last two games, and he also cracks under pressure.

Dilshan might play well against ND and ND might not be able to cope with Mendis' variations (just like Afghanistan in Asia Cup) but that doesn't mean these two will perform against the big teams. I think it's better to keep these two out and bring in Herath (for Mendis) and Thirimanne (for Dilshan). Playing against ND would be a good way for Herath and Thiri to start the tournament.

Mahela should open with Kusal if Dilshan is not playing.

As for Chandimal, impressive captaincy, and he's always been an awesome fielder but he MUST contribute with the bat and this will be a good chance for him to find his rhythm, too.

Having seen how ND played against IRE, SL shouldn't be complacent.

    Good luck, Lions!!

  • ajithabey on March 24, 2014, 3:41 GMT

Dilshan should be replaced by in form Thirimanne and it will be good to see Herath for Mendis.Thisara Perera's place too should be reviewed as you cannot carry passengers in an important tournament where every match counts.

  • Sandasiri_Asitha on March 24, 2014, 3:35 GMT

Should drop Thisara , Dilshan n bring Prasanna n Thirimanne in. Mendis ll be still handy against this match since dutches have no experience with him. next matches against NZ, ENG Lakmal should play head of Mendis. He bawled very poor Vs SA.

  • Vikum72 on March 24, 2014, 2:40 GMT

@anoop3301 on (March 23, 2014, 15:20 GMT): On what basis are you claiming Sri Lanka is an over rated T20 team. You can't just say things just for the sake of commenting, you need to back up your theories with proof. 1. SL has the best winning percentage (62.5%) among all nations who have played more than 3 games. India is 5th on the list. 2. SL holds the record for the greatest T20 winning margin by runs. 3. SL holds the record for the highest T20 innings total. 4. SL batsmen hold the no.2, 3 and 4 positions in the T20 highest scorers list (NZ 1st). 5. SL bowlers hold no.4 and 5 positions in highest T20 wicket takers list (Pakistan 1,2,3). And the list goes on and on. Sadly India doesn't seem to feature in any of the records unless they are at the receiving end. So tell me again on what basis were you calming the most successful nation in the T20 history, over rated? PS: Please note that IPL matches were not considered as they are just league games.

  • on March 24, 2014, 2:17 GMT

  • Lion_Wallaby on March 24, 2014, 2:11 GMT

@anoop3301 : Over rated team?? what sport are you talking about?? SL is the no 1 ranked T20 team. They got highest run getter/highest wicket taker. You can throw stones in jealous knowing the fact that SL is good but you cannot deny the truth! But that what Indians are know for all corners of the world

  • on March 24, 2014, 2:00 GMT

I don't think that dutch will be able to pull up an upset against sri lanka coz sl is the no.1 ranked t20 team and also sl is famous for pulling out victories out of the jaws of defeats..anyway dutch batsmen can be a threat to sri lankan bowlrs smtimes..bt as a sri lankan I hope sl will win this match comprehensivly.....

DreamCricketer: Dilshan should retire before the WC and Jayasooriya should get the young guys to the team now before it's too late. Also Sanga and Mahela will not perform in the WC.

  • on March 24, 2014, 1:33 GMT

good luck both the teams. as a srilankan we always respect our opponents.

  • Sudu_putha on March 24, 2014, 1:31 GMT

For SL this is walk in the park.. SL never lost agaisnt a small cricketing nations. They will crush Ned...

I am not even bother to watch the game, coz I know wthey will WIN FOR SURE

  • on March 24, 2014, 0:49 GMT

I doubt very much that the Dutch would be able to beat any of the test sides in the Super 10, but them reaching the S10 itself is a commendable achievement. With regard to the SL team composition, I don't think Dilshan deserves to be in this team in his current form. Thirimanna must come in and open with Kusal (hope Kusal has recovered from that hit to the helmet by now). Also it might be worth considering sending Chandimal at no.3. He's a player who needs pace on the ball to work with. In all the matches played so far it was very evident that it becomes very difficult to go for the big shots once the ball gets bit older. It might make sense to have a creative player like Mahela who's able to manufacture shots to come in bit later to bat with Angie and the late order.

  • Haider-pak-awsome on March 23, 2014, 23:56 GMT

All the best to Netherlands. They deserve to win today because they play with true spirit of cricket unlike their opponents today. Myburgh is going to increase his tally of highest sixes in the tournament. If SL mediocre bowling could take anything more than 4 wicket of Netherlands strong batting line up then that itself would be a big upset today. If Dutch bat first then 250 ++ score is on cards. But if they bat 2nd then the target would be easily chased within 11-12 overs with 8 wickets to spare.

  • Htc-Android on March 23, 2014, 23:52 GMT

This is a great opportunity for Dilshan to get his form back. We should look to secure a big win over Netherlands. Later on the NRR will play a big part in semi final qualifications. But we should not take them lightly. They got really good Australian and South African domestic players in their team.

  • iceaxe on March 23, 2014, 23:49 GMT

Tough job first up for Netherlands.

SL is a team most top-10 teams would have trouble beating. An improbable win would really put the cat among the pidgeons...

  • walidabbas on March 23, 2014, 19:43 GMT

i always support Sri Lanka, except for when they play against Pakistan. but i must say. in this match i am hoping Dutch wins :)

  • on March 23, 2014, 19:17 GMT

@anoop3301, if Sri Lanka, the world number 1 T20 team in ICC rankings is overrated, all other teams are just very very poor. Sri Lanka team is a fighting unit who have unique pool of talents. U will on 6th April

  • kc69 on March 23, 2014, 18:57 GMT

As my team India is winning I expect the same from SL, so that its Ind vs SL semis.Hope to see some interesting cricket in tomorrows match.Best of luck to both teams.

  • kc69 on March 23, 2014, 18:48 GMT

Come on Chandimal, no need to be nice.We all know SL has the firepower to beat the Dutch.Only thing is how Dinesh Chandimal performs as a player.

  • on March 23, 2014, 18:41 GMT

@anoop3301, if SL are so overrated, then considering that they beat India in the Asia cup, you're saying that India are even more overrated? I have nothing against India, and I believe that they are truly a great team. But so is SL, it's no fluke that they have been good enough to maintain top rank for nearly 2 years, or that they won the Asia cup. Just accept that SL is a good team, and deserve the credit they get.

  • surgeon101 on March 23, 2014, 18:32 GMT

i don't think sl can afford to drop chandimal based on one game, in that case u should drop dilshan, jayawardene and sanga. and lets face it anyone of these players (including chandimal) are at most likely to give u a good 50 or 60 at ODI pace, nothing more. the real game changers in the sl team with the bat are kusal perera, thisara perera and nuwan kulasekera....they can take the game away from the opposition in a few overs

  • on March 23, 2014, 18:31 GMT

We need good and thrilling games who ever plays the cricket must Win and the hearts of fans keep alive

  • slackers11 on March 23, 2014, 18:01 GMT

Netherlands I feel has a great chance qualifying from this group, but would be difficult to beat SL since they have a good spin attack, can't say the same about the other 3 teams in the group.

  • on March 23, 2014, 17:57 GMT

Best of luck to both teams.but as a sl i wish our team win

  • on March 23, 2014, 17:14 GMT

why only dilshan? thisara perera should drop immediately! he is leaking runs, sloppy fielder also he can't bat! when thisara start hitting when bowler bowling him off side! he only can bat when bowlers bowling to stumps! Drop thisara and dilshan and play sikku and lahiru

  • Lord.emsworth on March 23, 2014, 16:34 GMT

Netherlands always had aggressive batsmen, but no real breakthrough bowlers. SL will have to put up a very big total if they bat first. In a 2006 ODI were SL scored a record 443 the Netherlands replied with 248 against Malinga & co. SL ought to pull this one though, but the other batters must also do their bit. Over dependence on young Kushal isn't a good thing.

  • on March 23, 2014, 16:30 GMT

Its not going to be easy to win against us but I would really like to see them try. Good luck to both teams.

  • loris on March 23, 2014, 16:29 GMT

Sri Lanka will win, but not easily. Netherlands was amazing against Ireland. Their fire power is high. In this tournement need to score 200+ to secure win if first bat.

  • Lakpj on March 23, 2014, 16:19 GMT

@anoop3301 These groups have 5 teams and only 2 will go through, so don't count the chicks before the eggs hatch. After seeing the Aus bat against Pakistan, I doubt whether any other team will stand chance with their bowling if another Maxwell like innings comes in their way. And with this dew around it puts a huge value on the toss.

  • Prabhash1985 on March 23, 2014, 15:28 GMT

Sri Lanka had been underdogs ever since we played cricket. In all those matches we went to finals, in the beggining, no one says Sri Lanka will do. Even now, nobody accepts Sri Lanka is good. It's ok. Sri Lanka will win, but of course Netherlands team will be tough to beat. But Sri Lanka will win.

  • Rogue777 on March 23, 2014, 15:23 GMT

From a Sri Lankan Fan. First I love the Dutch they were amazing against the Irish who are also one of my favorites! Hope for a really awesome Srl Vs Ned match. Hope Srl win as a Lankan fan though. As for the 5 odd Indian fans and 3 odd BD fans demeaning Sri lanka. My message is do not feed them. You can not convince people like that. BTW both these countries have Millions of people. So my advise to Lankan fans is to ignore the 10 odd poor fans. I am sure the other Millions are all good people who appreciate good cricket no matter which country it comes from. I am sure cricinfo will NOT publish this as I am trying to calm down the hatred going on in this forum and cricinfo wants to keep it alive to increase the number of hits.

  • anoop3301 on March 23, 2014, 15:20 GMT

@yohandf: when did myself and gsingh pour hate comments here. We merely supported here since we felt Sri Lanka are an over-rated T20 team. If you want to see real hate comments , come to Indian cricket forum where some of the SL fans start dismissing indians as flat track bullies, mediocre bowling attack etc. First learn to give respect then you will automatically get it.

@Indika Vitharana : Your dream is not going to happen. India are well on the way to Semis..

  • DiamondSoul on March 23, 2014, 15:19 GMT

congratz netherlands for being qualified. As a sri lankan and a great fan of ur last game we are hoping for better cricket tomorrow.thumbs up for both teams.

  • jerryman on March 23, 2014, 15:16 GMT

SL cannot be complacent. Must play herath and thorimanne for mendis & Tissara p. If tissara p plays ,should not bowl as will leak runs at his medium pace. Cannot afford to have 10-12 sixers by the NED team as this will add an extra 50 runs . Maybe Mahela should open as Dilshan seems out of touch. Ned is a side that should not be under estimated . Good luck lions. Time for mahela & Sanga to get in touch

  • on March 23, 2014, 15:10 GMT

Many people pointing out removing Chandimal from team. At this state this is something unlikely because you won't see such big change at this moment. It's the form and approach of Dilshan 's is more important than any other because he has taken Sri Lanka to big stages in the history all alone. We didn't see Dilshan at his best with the bat as well as in fielding. So his return to form will contribute heavily on going forward.

  • on March 23, 2014, 15:08 GMT

@anoop: I have a gut feeling that India will be the first to exit the tournament.

  • yohandf on March 23, 2014, 15:07 GMT

@ Dear anoop3301 & gsingh7 - we are used to hatred comments of guys like you know from where it come from . This is the success of our beloved team sri lanka as people generally hate when gets scared of . Nothing can stop SL advancing to semi final from here . write somewhere . I admire netherland and the way they played so far , it will be real test for them now on wards .

  • surgeon101 on March 23, 2014, 15:02 GMT

For me, Herath should be playing every match...he needs the match practise. Ajantha Mendis will only succeed against Netherlands and that is pointless in the long run. Mendis has been figured out by every top side, is very expensive and lacks control in crunch situations. Herath is economical at the very least and makes a good combination with Sachira

  • cjchanaka on March 23, 2014, 14:56 GMT

We have to play quality cricket even against low level teams, specially in this format anything can happen.Mendis will be ideal for this, our major upset is the form of dilshan & chandimal. It is reasonable to give another chance for dilshan in this match. If he will fail certainly we have to do a change.Anyway hope no surprises.GO LIONS..............

  • Charindra on March 23, 2014, 14:54 GMT

I am Sri Lankan, but Sithum Samaraweera's comment is unnecessary. No matter what happens from here Netherlands have won many hearts with their courageous display that night. Being arrogant and condescending towards an associate team is not very Sri Lankan bro.

  • nickexplore on March 23, 2014, 14:27 GMT

Chandimal has a winning touch and SL will want to keep the momentum going. Just back from injury, Dilshan played pretty well against WI, then got a first-ball beauty from Dale Steyn and looks close to form. Time also for Sangakkara and a too cavalier Jayawardena to make a telling contribution. Chandimal leads his team very well, and Malinga and co. will be too good for the Dutch.

  • anoop3301 on March 23, 2014, 14:21 GMT

@Sithum Samaraweera: Netherlands may be beaten by your over-rated team but certainly not humiliated. Get ready for a total humiliation somewhere later in the tournament ( only if your team progresses !).

  • on March 23, 2014, 14:20 GMT

If Chandimal fails again, why don't they play Thirimanne, man of the series for his batting in the Asia Cup? Angelo could captain. No need to carry baggage.

  • on March 23, 2014, 14:04 GMT

Sithum Samaraweera your comment is very derogatory .Yes it is almost impossible for Netherlands to beat this very good Sri Lankan side but please do not underestimate 190 in 14.2 overs .No test side could have done it.Do not mock their efforts .They have shown heart till now hope they do so for the rest of the tournament.I just hope they can make semis but it is extremely unlikely

  • Herath-UK on March 23, 2014, 13:58 GMT

Mince meat to Sri Lanka but they are intelligent enough not to make a banana skin here. The issue for the Lankans to ponder is all their next three games are night games so dew factor should considered seriously so medium pacers are valuable.

  • anoop3301 on March 23, 2014, 13:57 GMT

come on netherlands.. if you play half as well as you played against Ireland, you can get over pseudo champions..

This is a chance for Chandimal to cash in, he cannot afford to let this slip by him. While his leadership skills and fielding are truly exceptional, he vannot bank on those to be in the national side. He needs to make heavy contributions with the bat, just as he used to, back in 2012, that Chandimal needs to return...
