Manjrekar: SL have been lacking X-factor in global finals

Big Picture

Romesh Kaluwitharana caught at third man. Sanath Jayasuriya caught at third man too. Asanka Gurusinha is out soon. Eden Gardens has erupted. Aravinda de Silva comes out and silences them, and the spinners bury them. Heartbreak.

Mahela Jayawardene, Nuwan Kulasekara and Thisara Perera take 54 in the last four overs. Lasith Malinga follows it up with early wickets of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar. Finally the final hoodoo is being broken. Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni, though, pull off a cool chase. Heartbreak returned.

Big matches between India and Sri Lanka have somehow left bigger scars than others. The semis and finals between these two have rarely been close. Think Eden Gardens 1996. Think Jayasuriya, Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas demolishing the psyche of a whole generation of India cricketers over the next three years or so. Or the many times they have knocked India out of major tournaments, either by directly beating them or other teams. Think even the Asia Cup final in 2008.

The captain of that losing Indian team in 2008 was a cricketer unlike any other Indian before him. Those scars left no imprint on his psyche. Under him, in limited-overs cricket, India have paid no heed to things such as history and legacy. Just keep doing your bit, the rest will take care of itself. In the process, they have overcome the shivers the sight of a Sri Lankan side in a big match used to send up the Indian spines. Under him, India have never lost a semi-final, and have been even with Sri Lanka in the finals. The turning point was that World Cup win in 2011, after which they have had it almost too easy against Sri Lanka in the really big matches.

Under that captain, India have put behind them a torrid recent time out of Asia, not just in Tests but also in ODIs, and have bossed this tournament. Dhoni has been the exact opposite of what he was before the break he took: fresh, backing his bowlers, trying to take wickets to slow runs down, making changes even to a winning combination to get the best XI on the field. India have responded superbly. R Ashwin and Amit Mishra have made sure there hasn't been a single horror day in the field. Led by Virat Kohli, the batsmen have risen up to every challenge. Now they are on the brink of doing something that has never been done: go unbeaten through a World T20.

If India have been channeling this rare calm they have achieved despite the turmoil in the administration of their cricket, Sri Lanka have ridden mainly on emotion. This could be the last final two of their greatest players ever play. It has almost been like some player or the other has been pulling them from the brink just for Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. It hasn't been smooth. They even have had to realise that their designated captain for the tournament doesn't merit a place in this XI. They have had to fight dew, they have come back from being bowled out for 119, they have had to drop their main spinner leading into the tournament. You almost feel it is meant to be with every such improbable comeback, but you have felt it often with Sri Lanka.

The pair of Jayawardene and Sangakkara have lost four world finals now. Last year, Sangakkara spoke of the pain eloquently in this interview. "We really need to talk about it being a final," he said. "The more you try to ignore it, the more you think about it. We need to find a way to deal with it." Maybe if somehow, at a canter or through weather or an opposition choke or through a great one over, just some how, if they can win one final, they will stop being so conscious about the match? Then again, they are against a team whose captain specialises in not being conscious of how big a match it is.

In the spotlight

Lasith Malinga has widely been considered the captain just for the toss with Jayawardene and Sangakkara visibly in charge of the field settings. He has also had some of his worst days on a cricket field against India. This is his chance to put one past the tormentors, and also show a thing or two to those of us who see him as a token captain.

Virat Kohli began becoming the possessed chaser that he is today with a century in a 300-plus chase in an ODI against Sri Lanka. Ever since that he has loved the Sri Lanka attack, especially going after their biggest name, Malinga. At the moment there is no glaring weakness in his game, he is extremely competitive and focused and in form. His lowest score in the tournament has been 23, and Sri Lanka will take if they can somehow give him a new lowest score.

Team news

It is unlikely India will make a change to their XI. Yuvraj Singh remains a question mark, but as he showed against Australia, he can still cause damage in a 10-ball spell, and you want such players on your side in big matches.

India (probable) 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Amit Mishra, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Mohit Sharma

Sri Lanka are closer to finding their best XI, and it doesn't include Dinesh Chandimal, their squad captain. However, you can't be sure if they will keep Thisara Perera out again.

Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Mahela Jayawardene, 4 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 5 Lahiru Thirimanne, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Seekkuge Prasanna/ Thisara Perera, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Sachithra Senanayake, 10 Lasith Malinga (capt.), 11 Rangana Herath

Pitch and conditions

The pitch will help spin, it will be slow too, but if there is a storm around, batting first might not be an automatic choice. There is a reserve day, should the weather not allow a result.

Stat and trivia

  • India v Sri Lanka in tournament finals: India 9, Sri Lanka 8, no-result 2.
  • Yuvraj Singh is 43 short of becoming the 17th player to 1000 T20I runs.
  • Kumar Sangakkara needs five dismissals in his final match to reach 50 dismissals.
  • If Tillakaratne Dilshan doesn't score 36 runs more than him, Mahela Jayawardene will sign off as the second-highest run-getter in T20Is.
  • If India win, not only will they have equaled the longest winning streak in T20Is, they will also hold all three ICC limited-overs trophies.

  • Oracle_Magus on April 6, 2014, 13:18 GMT

If Lankans wins the toss, it might be a blessing in disguise for the Indian team. Knowing the Indian reputation in chasing, Lankans may opt to go against their strength which is defending. And in a finals it will be a real challenge to hold on to their nerves especially when chasing. Even for the Indians this chase is a huge task, but MSD is the key here, his calmness is the only thing that could see us through a chase in a finals. If India is batting first a score of over 150 would suffice as the pressure of chasing in the finals will easily add another 30 runs to any target over 150. Either ways it's going to be a 'nail-biter'. All the best boys. Cheers!

Malinga, do not try special ...do your realistic normal, then it will deliver specialty at some point.

May the best team wins. Very disappointing to read support of a team on the basis of hatred. Enjoy the game and relax. Seek harmony. Our cricketers can be the best enablers to do so. Peace and Love!

  • on April 6, 2014, 13:14 GMT

No Shami. Perhaps India win. But will you treat your premier fast bowler like this?

  • bobbo2 on April 6, 2014, 13:13 GMT

Team that bats first will win, as per most knock out T20 games. Shocked SL have chosen to bowl here. They won their last 2 games batting first.

  • on April 6, 2014, 13:06 GMT

@ gaurav we don't need to produce a specific player coz we Sri Lankans play a team game and we the best cricketing nation as team

I am pretty confident that India would make it this time. The fantastic form of Virat and gaining momentum by Yuvi is a plus. Kumar, Aswin and Amit are doing great with ball now a days. Moreover, India has cool captain who can withstand pressure. If india chase..no chance at all for Srilanka. Chakde India!

  • doctorofdeath on April 6, 2014, 11:58 GMT

  • thecutiepie on April 6, 2014, 11:14 GMT

I am from bangladesh who really want srilanka to win this. Srilanka has all the support of bangladeshi people. I think Today is for srilanka and noone can stop them from winning it. Sanga and mahela deserve this. This one can be the least thing they can get from the world cricket as they give the world some wonderful moment. But as much as i hate Virat kohli it is that much true that he is the best player of this generation and for the upcoming one or two. India has a fantabulous captain. These two things are e nough to beat any team. So srilanka should be careful about them and the trophee will be them i hope.

  • dhanuhskaS on April 6, 2014, 10:46 GMT

My prediction is, it's going to be a flat track with no or limited assistance to the bowlers. Since the lords call the needs, SL boys should be prepared to face any mumbo-jumbo, right from the initial toss as it happened in 2011 WC Final! They should be prepared to win all the mini-battles thrown at them, apart from cricket! They have already faced plenty of them in this tournament as well. If they are on the right side of the coin & the conditions ok, SL should bat first & post a score that is difficult to Topple, even with Doubles! When dealing with such odds in this shorter format, hold your nerve & stick to the business, without any letups. That's the only key to success, no matter what! Hope Malinga would be able to deliver something special, with the help of such a capable/deserving bunch, who were holding the Runners-up Tag in the World Cricket scene for so long! Wish you Good Luck SL, Bless you India, to Win the game fairly and squarely!!

i have a doubt in rankings... after BD match against india, kohli had rating points of 830, and after match against saffas his points decreased to 821 even though he played better than that BD match.... can some one clarify this???

  • on April 6, 2014, 10:30 GMT

Ms Dhoni is quite powerful captain in indian History, he performs or not in his leadership Indian teams win matches quite easily, so Best of Luck Indian team, from Lahore

  • TORNADO46 on April 6, 2014, 10:28 GMT

Sanga and Mahela were never good players of T20 in comparison to what they have achieved in Tests and ODI.. Don't even know why they haven't given way to young players yet... they are trying to make this big thing as it was a farewell of SachinTendulkar . LoL... Sri Lanka are a dangerous side and will ony cause an upset if India bats first and gets bowled out for 140 odd.. Honestly, Mohit Sharma should be replaced with Shami.. Even though I don't think Shammi will make any difference

  • Dixter on April 6, 2014, 10:28 GMT

Today is big day for us both SL & IND ! As an Indian I will support my team and I wanted them to lift the memento.. but we really respect both Sanga & Mahe - both living legends who brought so many glories moments to SL . May the best team will win this, Good luck both team & play well ...

  • ramz30380 on April 6, 2014, 10:19 GMT

India has been the most consistent team of this tourney - strong willed, light footed, high on confidence and morale.... most importantly led by the best captain and finisher in the shorter formats of the game!

On the other hand, SL is riding on the emotional wave of seeing off two of the most respected SLnks in world cricket - Mahela and Sanga. Make no mistake, this emotional wave has pulled them off crunch situations.

Both Ind an SL are good teams and deserve to be here. The team tht can handle pressure better will have the last laugh today and on tht note I think India have an edge! All the Best India and SL!

  • on April 6, 2014, 9:55 GMT

India can even chase 185 or 190 the kind of batting they have and eveb Srilanka can chase 190 becaise of their long batting depth win the toss bowl first and 10% of the game in ur pocket expecting Mahela Jayawardena scoe most runs tody

  • Mutukisna on April 6, 2014, 9:43 GMT

Sorry, my note should read the balance 8 overs should be shared between Matthews, Thisara, Dilshan & Thirmanne.

  • on April 6, 2014, 9:40 GMT

This is Indian cricket's golden era. They deserve all the accolades for sure and the silverware coming their way. Lets accept it, India has been a far better side in this tournament. It's amazing how a team can transform so much because of one man. MSD is a champion and he has proved it time and again whether it be T20 wcup, 50 over wcup, no.1 test ranking, champions trophy, IPL, champions league. You name it and this man has done it. Wonderful cricketer indeed. Hats off to a true champion.

  • zaam_mohamed on April 6, 2014, 9:33 GMT

  • on April 6, 2014, 9:32 GMT

Srilankan will win they have a very strong team

  • Lankamata on April 6, 2014, 9:27 GMT

Sri Lanka should play with three spinners no matter what are the pitch conditions are throughout the tournament spinners have shown great influence. If Lanka win the toss should bat fist and after an explosive opening batting one down Kulesekara to be promoted as need to do something extra to beat India rather than getting 165/4 try to get 190/7 try out your explosive batters(Think Out of the Box ). If fails no issue still you can reach the par score you're not losing a good batsmen just one bowler. This way Lanka can win the cup my team1 Kusal, 2 Dilshan, 3 Mahela 4 Sangakkara (wk), 5 Lahiru 6 Angelo, 7 Seekkuge, 8 Kulasekara, 9 Senanayake, 10 Malinga(capt.), 11 Herath Even with this team give a over or two to Dilshan If Thisara Perera comes in for Seekkuge Lanka short of 1 spinner and it will be easy game for India.

  • Mutukisna on April 6, 2014, 9:27 GMT

India are the pundits and bookies favourites. In my opinion SL need to make the following decisions to give themselves a better chance. 1. If SL win the toss, bowl first 2.Bring back Mendis, Thisara P and Lakmal for Herath, Seekuge and Kulasekera. 3. Thisara should not bowl full 4 overs (see below). 4. Depending on the prevailing situation, 4 overs each should be bowled by Malinga, Senanayake and Lakmal. 5. The balance 4 overs should be shared by Matthews, Thisara, Dilshan and possibly Thirimanne, in any suitable permutation. 6. All batsman should play without fear like Kusal Perera if we are forced to bat first. Its a 20 over game and SL have depth in batting. If we bat second this will not be necessary as we can "play appropriately to the situation" Finally, the team should play without fear of failure as this is the mental factor which causes failure. Dont be afraid if you fail you do not have to answer to anyone because you tried your best. Good luck Sri Lanka, you can do it!

  • on April 6, 2014, 9:22 GMT

If india are chasing then they will win but if they bat first the contest evens out. India must improve their death bowling otherwise with the presence of dew defending any score will be a problem . Anyways I hope India wins the wt20 coz they deserve it.

  • brian007 on April 6, 2014, 9:16 GMT

This is Indian Cricket... And Time for a Repeat...

At the fall of the 8th Indian wicket, sections of the crowd vented their disgust with the state of the match by setting fire to some areas of the stands and throwing fruit and water bottles onto the field. The match was briefly stopped and when play was about to resume, the crowd again threw bottles at the deep fielders. The match referee stopped the game and the game was awarded to Sri Lanka by default.

  • brian007 on April 6, 2014, 9:12 GMT

It's two brains (Mahela & Sanga) against one (MSD)... One team strength (Indian Chase) is happens to be other team strength (Sri Lankan Defending)..

  • on April 6, 2014, 9:08 GMT

everone talking about death overs i dont know why all saying , 50-60 runs in last five is normal these days & all bowling unit including sl & pak (consider themself best bowling attack) have concieded lot of runs , indian bowling done good job in this series , & for sl malinga some how 80% choke against india , herath is left arm bowler , india play with 3 lefty so its get neutral , & all those who comparing batting lineup & saying there not much differnce then its hillarious , india will win by one side

  • Kmuzaffer on April 6, 2014, 9:02 GMT

Salute to you Chandra Prashad. Sounds truly like a Cricket lover rather than someone in love with cricketer(s) or a team. There can't be anything better than accepting defeat and applaud the winner knowing there will be another day or winning and staying humble for that very reason. I am from Pakistan, supported India in Semis and going to root for Sri Lanka in the finals. Its all about love for the game not a player or a team. May the best team win and the other shine besides it.

  • Pak_Fan86 on April 6, 2014, 8:49 GMT

Hope India win today. Because they deserve it!!!!! they have earned this respect, specially MS Dhoni. What a leader he is, wow!!!! simply wow!!! dont have words to praise him enough. No hard feelings SRI fans, but if Sri win, i will be happy too, they have also played well. But i guess thats not gonna happen. Best of luck to both team from Pakistan.

  • VinothSam on April 6, 2014, 8:42 GMT

Does not matter who wins today. Even if Sri Lanka win this cup we are still losers becaurse we are going to lose two of our best legends in less than 24 hours. I wish I could go back in time where Snaga and Mahia started playing their debut. Hard to see them saying good bye. Missing you both my heroes.

As a Pakistani cricket lover one of my favorite cricketer is Virat Kohli becoz the way he play his shots & scoring runs you will not feel that he feels any pressure but he is playing so natural that target become small. His method of playing ball is different from other players he never come with blank mind to hit a ball but he make the mind within fraction of seconds to hit the ball on his deserve position. Changing strikes makes him a great player who is not always hungry for 4's & 6's but he is a player who want to stay at the crease till India win or come to a winning position that's why he is a thinker player who keep one eye on the score board and other on his shorts. He not comes to crease to become out quickly but he come with a mission a 'mission ' to accomplish with India win. All bowlers dreaming to get his wicket but the bowler has no idea that Virat Kohli mind is computerize who adjust his hand & bat on the perfect position to hit the ball on his merit. His future is bright.

Finalists are just expected. Two best teams of the subcontinent playing against each other for the coveted icc t20 world cup, in familier conditions. Srilankan team is just a perfect blend of the youth and experienced like Sanga,Jaya, Kushal, Malinga and Nuwan while Indians are heavily dependent on winning the toss and putting Sl to bat first then chase down everything they set, riding on the form of Virat and finishing capability of its captain. All the best MSD. Spoil the farewell of their legends one more time like u did with Murali's in 2011.

  • on April 6, 2014, 8:19 GMT

Sri Lanka team is playing like with nine players since non performing Sanga and inconsistant Mahela are in the side.I think selectors are in very difficult situation as they have to include these to anyhow to give last honor.Sanga could only scire 19 runs from four innings at the average of 4.75.have better drop down the list if they are to included.

  • CricketFirst on April 6, 2014, 8:02 GMT

My heart says Sri Lanka & my brain also says Sri Lanka. India very strong in batting but Sri Lanka are better in bowling and fielding. But India has a good captain in Dhoni so SL must use experience of Mahela & Sanga in making decisions. Both teams have many impact players. Overall it's going to be a good contest.

SL should win it this time coz they have been very consistent in shorter formats of the game. Recently they have found a formula to win from pressure situations as well. So SL is in good shape to beat the high performing India and lift the WT20 Trophy 2014. Good Luck team Sri Lanka.

  • parikshit_Ops on April 6, 2014, 7:58 GMT

T-20 is the most unpredictable format of the fame among the 3 formats. So anything can happen but having said that India are clear favorites. Nice to have Sanga, Mahela presence in Final but Indian Players should take it out of their mind, No empathy for anybody. Matches should be played sportingly but ruthlessly. If Srilanka wants it to win really desparately for Sanga/Mahela. It will win and then only it would be deserved, we sould make their task as tough as we can. For India irrespective of the pitch, chasing should be the priority. Limit Srilanka to 150 odd and chase keeping wickets in hand in first 10 overs. If India gets 1st batting, again make 70-75 odd for atmost 2 wickets in first 10 and go berserk in last 10 to get the score past 175-180. For me, the important batsmen Sharma/Kohli. Important Bowlers - Kumar/Ashwin.Banking on Kumar to restrict RR, control Perera by Away Swing. Threat to India, Only Perera in batting but Malinga, Herath, possibly Senanayake in bowling.

By observing the current form of all players in both teams, pressure handling capacity, confidence, match winning capacity whether it by chasing or by defending, clearly India is ahead...Indian batsmen especially Dhoni and Kohli can handle Malinga very well and other all batsmen can play spin bowling, so India has 70:30 chance today...Dhoni will become the first ever captain to win 3 world cups for his team and India will complete TRI-SET of ICC trophies.....ATB for both teams

@ Indian Cool Guy. Indian cool guy seems not cool at all in his postings. Telling that if SL team wins its purely luck. Which will make the whole world smile sarcastically. A team cannot be ranked on the top of ICC T20 table with pure luck. And obviously rain is out of SL's control, ans we wanted to see windies match to an end too. Lets not post any prejudice posts here and wish the best team wins. Show your sportsmanship guys pls.

  • on April 6, 2014, 7:24 GMT

DEATH bowling can be the difference in this game where SL are superior to Ind due to Malinga. Spinners effect is balanced and both teams slightly similar in batting resources. Slight advantage by india in batting can be offset by SL death bowling. Lets see.

SL have been winning in Bangladesh for so long now may more than three months. They are the asian champion after beating pakistan and now they are very close to winning this t20 cup beting india. Big 3 of SL cricket, Sanga, Mahela & Dilli deserve a perfect send off and if they come good then it will be a memorable night for SL fans and these three stalwarts. Malinga is too hot to handle but the luxury to face him in IPL will help indian batsmen. SL spinners are almost equally good as indian spinners which will be deciding factor. Death bowling can be the deciding factor where SL are far superiior due to Malinga. (Mark my words).

  • SS2S on April 6, 2014, 7:08 GMT

I believe dilshan should go down in the batting order and sanga should open batting with kusal as when ever sanga comes after the powerplay,he finds it hard to rotate strike and hit boundaries or up the tempo as he does it beautifully in odi' s in powerplays. Dilshan on the other hand he only scores run a ball these days which I believe he can still do the same even he comes down the order. I firmly believe sanga should open the innings if we really want to utilize him to get the best out of him in this final.

  • chapathishot on April 6, 2014, 6:55 GMT

I also feel it will be a tough one for both the teams both have played really well but one has to be a loser. Both the teams are confident also but even after their best performance SA who are the best in defending scores in T20 cannot stop India. So Srilanka have to play out of their skins to win against India. But I like Mahela may be one for him,no chance again even in 50 overs in 2015.

  • on April 6, 2014, 6:49 GMT

Sri Lanka has been no 1 ranked team in ICC t20 since last wc held in 2012. most consistent team in the world. having said that this the fight between Sri Lanka and India so anything can happen. Sri Lanka dominated Indai during 1996 - 2000 period but recently India has been dominating Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka should break opening partnership early and then should get Kholi as well. also they should get Raina and Dhoni quickly as well. also should not let Yuvi and Jadeja to free their hands. Sri Lanka should bat well agianst mishra and yuvi as I dont think ashwin will make any threat to sri lanka.

  • Shumbu on April 6, 2014, 6:46 GMT

Perfect stage for a trademark MSD finish! Yes, Dhoni has got the best out of his players during this tournament. He has captained very well and was very active on the field than usual. On a big final day, the script is simple.... SL wins the toss and ask India to bat first. Pumped up captain Malinga gives them a good start and puts India under pressure. Kohli fails to score big and this forces India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to promote himself to No:4.... we know what happens next and SL are used with that. MSD to take India to a huge score with his well calculated power innings... and his bows will ensure MSD's innings is not wasted!! Cricinfo: Please take a note of my prediction as this will happen for sure.

    My Teams:

SL XI: (Why SL dropped T Perera ? Was he so bad to get excluded, I don't think so. His big hitting at the back is extremely effective & wouldn't fancy bowling him much though) (Make Jayawardene the official captain for his last match & he's the best captain in the team) 1 K Perera 2 Dilshan 3 Jayawardene (C) 4 Sangakkara (WK) 5 Thiramanne 6 Mathews 7 T Perera 8 Kulasekara 9 Senanayake 10 Herath 11 Malinga.

IND XI: (Bring back Shami in place of Mohit. Can't understand the obsess of India for Mohit) 1 R Sharma 2 Rahane 3 Kohli 4 Yuvraj 5 Raina 6 Dhoni (C+WK) 7 Jadeja 8 Ashwin 9 Mishra 10 Shami 11 Bhuvneshwar.

I am telling this kind of thing first time. Today no one can't stop SL Win. Surely SL win today. I don't underestimate Ind team. They have best captioncy plus best finisher. Strongest batting line up in the world including miracle Kholi. And wide variety of bowling line up which suit to any condition. But Today is the day for Sri Lankans. No need to repeat Sammy's comment after semi. Just remind Cricket is beyond bat and bowls game.

Cant tell how heart warming it is to see not only fans from Ind n Sl but also every other nation acting like real cricket fans.Wishing both teams luck, hoping for their own team to win but most respecting opposition teams and fans.I hope this continues no matter what the result because most important thing has already happened cricket has brought all the brothers closer.Love you all guys.May the best team win :)

  • Maxx_Aftab on April 6, 2014, 6:21 GMT

Perhaps that remains the difference between both the teams: individual brilliance versus disciplined team performance. Both teams are equally capable of winning the title. The strengths, the execution and performance of both teams couldn't be so drastically different. India have always remained in control throughout the series, whereas SL have ridden on making the most of key moments to win their matches.

It may end up being a cracker of a match, or there could be complete one-sided affair. Regardless of the way it ends, the best 2 teams are in the final and I wish the best of luck to both the teams.

On a personal note, I'll be rooting for India, and not just because I'm an Indian. The real reason is that their current performance has been the most consistent throughout the series, which is the mark of a champion team.

  • Maxx_Aftab on April 6, 2014, 6:21 GMT

On the other hand, Indians have been methodical and their unbeaten status in this tournament only confirms this fact. The bowling has been much disciplined than that of their recent tournaments. The resurgence of Mishra and Ashwin has allowed them to dictate the flow of the game for most of the duration, on which they have capitalised heavily. The batting is as trusted as ever, with all batsmen chipping in to provide their important contribution. Even more amazing is the fact that none of the bowlers took 5 wickets and none of the batsmen made a century in this tournament. Yet India has remained unbeated simply because every single team member has contributed.

This is going to be a very interesting final. Both SL and India are the 2 best teams from the tournament.

SL have been emotionally charged, backing themselves and coming out victorius. History says that SL have lost more finals than they would like. The ones which will sting the most are the WC final losses for both ODI and T20. But it would be unfair to write them off, as they possess really talented players in their line up. SL may also look for the emotional boost to provide a perfect ending for their legends. If they are able to carry it off, then it will be a sight to behold. Everytime the team had faced a moment of crisis, one of the individuals has shone brilliantly. The amazing bowling of Herath, the power hitting in the last 5 overs, the Malinga yorkers, all have ensured that SL always has snatched victory from the jaws of defeat when it mattered the most.

  • vick2025 on April 6, 2014, 5:34 GMT

Indian is winning this....Sl is a good team also but they will not be at their best...it has happened to them in the past during Finals and it will happen again....Only the team is capable of handling pressure...and we have proven that time to time over the many years...So good luck to both teams...Can't wait for 9 am :)

  • cooljack_143 on April 6, 2014, 5:13 GMT

all DEPENDS ON ROHIT,how he paces his innings, if he can contribute 35 plus tuns in 15 deliveries, that would be a great boost to the team, also Rahane, we just ask for a 50-60 run partner ship in 30 balls, that will be great..Mishy by nw would hav learnt his mistakes not to ball short & take the pace off.Love to see Hearth, if he plays, how he will be handled by Ind batsmen. It will be huge huge mistake if perera is rested.he is match winner not seeku.

Without Dhoni and Kholi as captain India could not win the Asia cup.But this T20 final with both of them in Indian team Sri Lanka will win the cup. Kholi is not going to score even 10 runs. You can see his unhappy behaviour all the time today

  • on April 6, 2014, 4:51 GMT

this will going to be a cliff hanger , india unbeaten in t20 tournament but do remember SL is the only team that have beaten them twice on the ground 1 in asi cup and 2nd in warm up match . SL wining record on mirpur is 100% they only lost to england in Chittagong due to dew issue.

Both india and SL have world class batsmen against spinners so no edge for india as far as spin is concerned in this match. In my view its 50-50 yes first time india is playing against the team which can compete them in all 3 departments bowling fielding and batting. The final question who will reman ice cool under pressure.May the best team take this cup home best of luck SL and India.

As an ardent fan of cricket from the sub-continent, I am so proud that two of the most consistent sub-continental teams are playing this final. And no matter what, one of them will be victorious tomorrow.

Yes, if our own team looses, we will feel it. So what? Mahela and Sangakara are ours pride as well, as Kohli/Yuvi/Dhoni should be yours. Let us hope it is our two teams, and not the Mirpur sky, that decides the fate of this final.

Being hopeful as Sri Lanka cricket fan to lift the throphy

  • Johnny_129 on April 6, 2014, 3:20 GMT

There are two schools of thought for the final. The sentimentalists (and SL fans) would say that Jayawardene & Sangakara have had long and distinguish careers and deserve to go out as WC winners. Whereas the cricket purists (& Indian fans) would suggest that the best overall team in the tournament and the best player in the tournament deserve to win - India have won all their games convincingly (without any rain interruptions) and remain the only undefeated side while Kholi undoubtedly has stood above all overs. Team India don't deserve to lose but neither do Sanga & Jaya?

  • on April 6, 2014, 3:18 GMT

Ind has been the most consistent team in this World cup.. but there's this feeling that SL will win this one.. a proper sendoff for mahela and sanga.. and just by looking at how SL progressed in the tournament, winning tight matches from the jaws of defeat, heavens opening up for a hailstorm when the windies were about to assault in the last 6 overs.. maybe its destiny!

It is amazing how these two teams have reached finals. India undefeated and convincingly beating the opponents. Sri Lanka - winning all except one and living dangerously in each encounters. Now this game is between one mighty nation and a nobody in terms of numbers. Rich cricket board and a bankrupt counterpart. Heavily played team vs not-paid. Superstars Vs Ordinary men with some talents. Cricket fanatics Vs Not so fanatic. Despite all odds, Sri Lanka have reached 5 finals. Nobody gives free card to reach finals. It's sheer guts and character. Team Sri Lanka can bring home the cup this time. India can be proud of its Asian brother today. All the best for both team.

@Aditya Mandalemula- Yeah, that will be tragic. But SL is in the finals at the expense of so many others. Therefore in a way it's not so tragic. Besides world cups will happen for every 4 years until the world ends. Australia won it 3 in a row, windies 2 in a row. Does it matter now? Sport lives on..

  • IndianCoolGuy on April 6, 2014, 3:06 GMT

  • ip_aus on April 6, 2014, 2:24 GMT

Sri lanka is more favorable in this match with their recent performances. All the major series they lost (2007 wc, 2011 wc, 2012 T20 wc) were mostly dependent upon senior players, but this tournament has become a different so far with contribution from junior players as well. Also the asia cup last month proved that how indians get panic under certain situations. so the game is open for both teams but SL more favorable to win this one.

I have read some comments here which say "this team or that team deserves to win the final". Well, the team that truly plays better on the day deserves to win!! Also, it is not Kohli vs Malinga but India vs Sri Lanka. Both teams have a number of matchwinners. India's playing XI appears unlikely to change while Sri Lanka may want to make one or two changes to their team. I am hoping for a thrilling finals. Best wishes to Mahela and Sangakkara, two great Sri Lankan players and cricket statesmen, who will play their last T20 match. They have served SL cricket for a long time with great distinction. I would love India to win this Championship, at the same time would not mind it if Sri Lanka wins, as it is the last game of both Sanga and Jaya. I have admired Jaya's coolness and he is a big match player. Will not go by general statistics as he reserves his best for the big occasion. Come the hour and come the man. I am hoping this one is a real humdinger. Malinga is a class player but has come short against India but I am sure he will perform well tomorrow. I feel Senayake is another crucial bowler for Sri Lanka. Hope Virat has a great finale and Raina, always plays for the country, without bothering about his place, we do need to give him a long leash, as he is also a good bowler and fielder. One thing sure is, the cup will be in Asia and in the sub continent, the Asians are tough competitors. Good luck to both team. Lets enjoy being positive and respect our opponents also have positive comments that makes interesting reading on Cricinfo.

Good luck Sri Lanka. Win or loss, you have already won billions of heart across the world for the way you are playing your cricket. Being an underdog in the final is a not a bad thing - don't want to remind, but just ask the Windies. Don't put pressure on yourself cos the greats' last T20 match. I salute you both for not only what you have given to SL cricket, but also for thinking of the future of SL cricket. Not many sportsmen would do that. Cricket has seen many gentlemen and you are the best of the lot. I hope the emotions don't get better of the team tomorrow. Just treat as another match like Dhoni or Ponting would do and do what you normally do to win 'a' match. On the other hand, almost all the teams would swap five finals. Very well done and extremely proud of what you have achieved. Be calm and give your best shot tomorrow.

This is going to be an interesting match to watch... No need of arguing back and forth between Indian & SL fans... Both teams are blessed with world class talent and both team can deliver at crunch time... Good luck both teams.. May game of cricket win always.

  • spinkingKK on April 5, 2014, 22:38 GMT

People talk about Sanga and Mahela retiring after this match. But, it is not all that emotional moment. It is not as if they have been setting the world on fire in that format and we are never going to see them again. They are only retiring from the T20 formats (that too from the international T20) in which they are not greats anyway. So, I don't see this as a big moment.

  • spinkingKK on April 5, 2014, 22:30 GMT

Why many people talk about Kohli playing well in the final. I don't think there is any such pressure for India. If he doesn't, there others like Rohit, Raina, Yuvi, Dhoni, Jadeja to perform . Too many options there. Also, the new guy Rehane looking good. I think it is going to be the battle of the batsmen to counter the spin bowling. Both teams have good spin bowling options and the team which plays the spin bowling sensibly will win this match. Sri Lanka always plays the crunch matches well and they means business. But, this Indian team has been playing every match superbly and showing different ways to win a match on each new match they play. So, this time, I believe India will win a close nail-biting match, for a change.

  • on April 5, 2014, 22:25 GMT

If India failed to bang SL in the final, it would be shameful for a stronger team to get beaten by a tiny team. I'll be so glad if India wins with a highest margin of score but if it failed then the whole team should be ready to face public reaction once they get back to home, I'm sure Indians don't want to take this risk at all but they want to take the World Cup to home with them tomorrow after banging SL so hard with full of their energy. India has been playing really well in the whole tournament and have given their best performance which is why they're number 1 in T20 ranking. That's why I'm saying it's not suitable for them to let SL win no matter what. I'm sure whoever wins the toss first will go for batting first and will have higher chances of wining the game. If SL won it'll be their luck. Let's see what happens in the very last match of World Cup. My support is all with Indian team, SL wouldn't get into final at all if their was no rain in their last match, good luck India

  • Herath-UK on April 5, 2014, 22:07 GMT

If there is a cricketer worthy of lifting the ICC Cup tomorrow for Sri Lanka, after the failures from Mahela & Sanga, he is definitely MALINGA! It is ironic how he has suddenly turned out to be the captain of this team & we all know the strange & peculiar & unexpected events. However are they the pre eminent signs that Sri Lanka are going to win the Cup? Malinga who has brought so much fame to Sri Lanka with his unique brand of bowling, who has made a niche in the annals of world cricket,is the most deserved to hold the Cup up for Sri Lanka following Arjuna . Karma has its own way of producing effects & this turn of strange events make me to believe it is Sri Lanka & Malinga who are going to win the Cup tomorrow!

  • nilup9123 on April 5, 2014, 21:54 GMT

who said that india won all matches and because of that they will win the final. take that back. cause Sri lanka won all matches in 2009 Ttwenty world cup and lost to pakistan in the final, so anything can happen. one more thing this is for indian fans. you guys should admire the Sri Lankan, our pool is around 20,2,50,000 and the indian population is 1,200,000,000 to choose from. i would say we Sri Lankans always proud that we did the job in 1996 and came to the finals so many times, un like India who did not come to the finals as often as sri lanka. with the limited power. so all you indians can wish for a indian win, but respect Sri Lanka always even if we loose what we have done and will do in the future..thank you

  • cooljack_143 on April 5, 2014, 21:24 GMT

If Ind fears the EXTRA encouragement in the Opposition camp that they want to give A GOOD SEND-OFF to their Legends then, Ind can not win a single series, as recently when ever Ind plays the decisive match some guy is coming to retirement & wants to end on a high note, then KALLIS now Sanga & Mahela. Incidentally Ind on the hit always. Is this a glitch now?? Sanga did so much in Tests & ODI's but little in T20's as comp to Mahela & Moreover they are just retiring from T20 NOT FROM OTHER FORMATS, So people plz dont make a big deal about that. These players are retiring based upon their poor showing in the format and nothing else. They just dont want to get embarrassed in future by holding on to team.

  • cooljack_143 on April 5, 2014, 21:18 GMT

The team WHICH FIELDS GOOD(takes all catches, affects run-outs,stumpings & stops run flow )on the field is going to win PERIOD.Both SL & IND are equal on batting & Bowling in T20's.

  • on April 5, 2014, 20:37 GMT

Indian Team is very well composed. The calm and cool captain, aggressive players and collection of match winners has made the team stable. Even as a fan, while in the fast you leave hope on many occasions, you do lose faith and feel no worry even if your team loses quick wickets or give away too many runs: because you know your team bounce back and win any total with any player. Good Luck!!!

Should be a cracking of a game with the two best world teams at present. It is difficult to pick a winner convincingly here with two equally talented teams. India have a better batting unit & Sri Lanka make the equation equal with a superior all round game in batting bowling & fielding. On paper facing India looks a daunting task however the Sri Lankans will take heart from the fact that they have defeated the Indians now twice in the most two recent games with their star Kohli unable to make an impact. However it is a 50/50 game & kudos to both teams showing fantastic skills on the field. Best wishes for a Sri Lanka win!

  • ABKhanISB on April 5, 2014, 20:09 GMT

It will be hard to pick a winner but the Team that ticks ten out of ten on that day could walk away with the trophy.

I leave it to the best side to win as then there're no hard feelings or sour grape story.

Firstly congratulations to two execellent players Kumar Sangakara and Mahela Jayawardane. You have been pillars of the mordern game and as an Indian i will miss you both be it any form. Its sad because these players are a dying breed of class from a previous generation. Ironical because that generation had a problem of plenty of class. Today when I look around with all due respect class is not that prominent. Having said that well frankly until there is a miracle Sri Lanka will be runners up again. India is a top side in top form and they will be champions. Cheers to them for the treble.

  • NextSana on April 5, 2014, 18:10 GMT

Indians only have Kohli in their hands & we all know Sharma's bad form against us same goes with Dhawan too. Rahane is a new guy can't predict & Dhoni is not in form cause of the lack of chances. I hope we can get Raina or out of form Yuvraj early so we can restrict them under 150/160. We are always top fielding side and good intent shown in the last semi too.

If they win the toss they are going to ball first so we have to score 160 or 170 better. We have a better bowling attack than them. Kula, Malinga & Mathews always troubles Indian openers so do Sachi & Herath and Indians over dependency of Kohli. If he gets out below 10 then we have 80% of chance winning the match If not I still think it still favours us 60% to 40%. But we have to play Ashwin's first 2 overs with caution & needs to attack Mishra & Mohit too.

Undefeated doesn't matter cause we were undefeated in '09 before Paki beat us in the finals. By the way I forgot we successfully defended 153 against India in the warm up.

  • Htc-Android on April 5, 2014, 17:43 GMT

Thisara perera should play tomorrow. He generally bats well against india and I dont know how good is seekkuge with the bat. Kusal should play his natural game. One of Sanga/Mahela should bat till the end. These two can accelerate the innings with risk free shots when they get set. With the ball they have to get Kohli out earlier.

  • test_cricket_lover on April 5, 2014, 17:42 GMT

It's true that SL completely dominated India in the late 90s. But then India's domination of SL started arguably from a one-day match in which MSD scored his career best 183. Sanga made 138 in the same match and SL looked like they're going to win the match after Sachin got out cheaply in the chase. MSD, who then was famous for his milk-drinking habits, came in and spoiled the party. Since then there is no look back for India except a rare failure when the Indian batsmen had no clue of Ajantha Mendis in 2008. I am sure tomorrow's final will add yet another glorious chapter to the rich history between these two teams. Salute to Jaya and Sanga for their contributions. Riding on emotions, Sri Lanka is expected to be an irresistible force tomorrow. But they're are up against an immovable object.

  • CherryWood_Champion on April 5, 2014, 17:40 GMT

I would say the odds are 60-40 in favor of India. Both the teams are pretty even ... except in two areas. Batting for India is firing in all cylinders, while that is not the case with SL. Both the Perera's should make contributions if SL has to win. But the biggest difference would be the captain. Captain Cool MSD has been a thorn in the flesh for SL since a while now. Somehow I have this feeling that MSD would again be the highlight of the match. Good luck to both the teams, you both deserve to be in the finals.

  • on April 5, 2014, 17:26 GMT

The semi between SA & India was even . But for Kohli, Aswin & Raina, India would have lost it. The ground fielding was deplorable. Approach of Dhoni was negative. He left out Sami and did not gave enough overs to Jadeja. It was astonishing. By luck his team went ahead.

  • on April 5, 2014, 17:08 GMT

The biggest advantage Sri Lanka will have going into this final is 'motivation'. In each of the players will be a burning desire to win, not only to exorcise the ghosts of losing World Cup finals but also to honour two of their greatest servants. This was the major motivation for India in 2011. The whole Team and nation urged the lads on for one man, the living legend Sachin Tendulkar, gentleman genius. However these emotions are a double edged sword. Defeat once again for Sri Lanka will be devastating and will rock the nation. This thought will be consuming the players every minute of the day. Jayawardene and Sangakara will be like two Generals leading from the front, prepared to take the bullets on their chest. This is the only factor that I would be wary about. We have to come hard at these two. We need to break their spirit. I have no doubt that India will win. I am confident the Team has the same belief.

    @King Rawan

Please do not call Malinga a world class player and make fun of other world class players. In general Srilanka has produced very few good players like De silva, murali, Sanga, mahela and other than De silva and Murali none of the other are legends. And Sanga is a much much better player than Mahela.

Just because SL are scarce with quality players, does not mean all the other better players are deserved to be called legends ... LOL if we claim someone like Mahela, Malinga, Dilshan, Sanga as world class.

  • Criktic on April 5, 2014, 16:51 GMT

Good luck to both the teams. This has been a great tournament with some real close encounters. SL vs NZ and Ind vs SA were a treat to watch. SL and Ind have been doing all the hard work in tournaments for Asia whereas our Pak team has been our of form for a long time. Anyways, hope to see another thriller : )

  • Raja75 on April 5, 2014, 16:47 GMT

So both deserving teams are in final. I think it is quite predictable from the start of the tournament that these two teams will be in final.

In my humble opinion India winning has probability of 0.8 and SL winning is 0.2.

How SL can have better chance only if India bat first and SL can restrict them below 160. In this case the probability of SL winning will get increase. As I am expecting a dame good wicket for batting nothing for bowling.

    Let us see

With due respect to Sri Lankan cricket team, but if they have to win tomorrow they will have to give more then 100 percent. They have run in to a very confident Indian team with all the guys tuned to perfection. If they can get Kohli out they will have Raina,Yuvi and Mahi to take on. All together they will have a tough game. But Sanga and Mahela guys you are world class no doubt, but then every journey has to come to an end. You guys have served Lankan cricket with great dedication. My salute to you. I wish the team which plays well on the day will win the trophy. But I guess Indians are favourite, because Malinga has been sorted well by Kohli. If Malinga and Kulasekrara can provide early break throught we will have game on. Best of luck to both the teams may the best team win.

  • VK_MSD_IND_Champs on April 5, 2014, 16:07 GMT

Hope for a good game..Even though I want my team INDAI to win,I DO RESPECT THE TWO GREATS OF MODERN ERA (MAHELA & SANGAKARA) and as DARREN SAMMY once said, may they get retired with a high note.Mahela is the greatest tactician ever produced in t20 cricket history imo.Good luck both the teams!

  • on April 5, 2014, 16:07 GMT

India and SL in Finals is a close thing (wouldn't have noticed that based on recent encounters) both teams have the ability, hoping for a cracking final. My heart wants SL to win for the sheer consistency they have shown in reaching finals of big tournaments and surely deserve a cup for their endeavours however mind says India will come out trumps again due to their form and ability to handle big game pressure as they showed in the SF where they were under pressure to chase down a big score.

All the best to both teams, glad its an all Asian final just like in 2007. A Pak fan who will thoroughly enjoy the finale from 2 great teams!!

  • DwightR on April 5, 2014, 16:03 GMT

2007, 2009, 2011, 2012...2014? surely SL will not lose 5 finals on the trot..the Lions come in as underdogs as always but just like Ind won it for Sachin in 2011, the Lions will win it for Sanga, Mahela & Dilshan! the key to this match will be Lanka chasing in order to have a chance. I know this tournament hasn't had the best results for the side batting second but India batsmen are unstoppable if they have a target...best way is to let them set the set and go after thier bowling...C'mon Lions ROAR!

  • on April 5, 2014, 16:01 GMT

SL need to bring their trump card spin bowler Mendis back in to the battle. Coz he could be the game changer at any moment. One can say that he is not in form but MJ knows exactly how to and when to use his spell. Further record, when last time he was getting hammered by Hales, unfortunately MJ was not in the field. No matter what happen tomorrow, We as Sri Lankans we love our team and we love Cricket. Cheers!

  • on April 5, 2014, 15:59 GMT

If anyone deserve to win a world cup it is Sri Lanka. Always playing so well but fall short in the final. Hopefully luck is on our side tomorrow. India is a terrific side and its going to be a great game. Finally Asian country will win !

  • on April 5, 2014, 15:53 GMT

sri lanka has absolutely no chance against this ruthless indian side. a team with temporary captain cant beat a team with world class captain. kohli is malinga specialist. he will deal in boundaries.

We need to see the twin towers of Sril Lankan cricket say good bye to T20 cricket with a smile. Win or Loose we still with team SL.. Of course if our hearts could able to withstand the fifth stroke. :-;. May triple gem wish for SL team. Die hard SL cricket fan..

India will repeat the history which happened in the same month just before 3 years and achieves complete set of ICC trophies, sorry SL for another inevitable loss in finals....If SL bats first, they should at least put 200+ target for Indian batsmen...otherwise it will be difficult...India is in the habit of chasing everything...so clearly advantage India...60:40 chance for India...ATB for both teams

  • on April 5, 2014, 15:08 GMT

It was great to see how Sri Lankan Players and Indian Players came through to the finals. It is no doubt that the 2 teams will fight hard to grab the title. Top two teams from both the Groups have qualified for the Finals. It shows how well and the quality of cricket they played through out the tourney. But what I feel is that this time the title belongs to Sri Lanka. Mahela and Sanga will get a fabulous farewell from their team mates. It is up to the young Sri lankan cricketers like Angelo, Lahiru, Kusal, Sachitra to excel well while getting the support from the old guns. Toss would be crucial and Bowling changes should be smart enough. Both the on field umpair's judgments should be accurate enough. The only change I suggest is Thisara in for Seekuge. Good luck both the teams.

  • on April 5, 2014, 15:06 GMT

SL deserves to win the cup more than any other team. They have been the best T20 team in the past years. They've had a very good year so far. They beat India twice this year, during the Asia Cup and the warm up game. Sri Lanka has also broken the curse in a final by winning the Asia Cup. It will be a contest between the best defenders and the best chasers. As a Sri Lankan, I wish my heartedly wishes to the SL team to win the cup and give the Great Sanga and Mahiya the best farewell they could ask for.

  • sweet2hrme on April 5, 2014, 14:57 GMT

India is going to win simply becoz they hv more & far better match winners than that of Srilanka. Their bowlers are in form so as batsman. Looks better team in every department. But I want srilanka to fight they must pick Mendis as he is better than hearth specially against india. Clearly, Its match b/w India vs lankan bowlers & their fieldings. On batting india looks far settle. Plz lanka fight otherwise india is going to win comprensively again. Yes Comprensive win mark my word.

  • KingOwl on April 5, 2014, 14:56 GMT

No, Malinga: Don't try to do anything special. Do what you always do. It will be a disaster to do something different, although the intention is to do something 'special'.

  • on April 5, 2014, 14:54 GMT

If Sri Lanka neutralise kohli they win. if India neutralise kaushal perera they win.The teams bowling attacks almost cancel each other. I feel these two are the inform impact players.

  • on April 5, 2014, 14:53 GMT

I don't think there is much difference between Rahane and Dhawan right now... Maybe, rahane is getting more runs, but his pace of scoring is a bit of a bother; Dhawan may yet come into the match and cause a difference with a rapid 50 or so... Rohit Sharma needs to maintain his aggressive brand of stroke play which is paying rich dividends at the top... Kohli and Dhoni will be the key to blunt Malinga and even if Yuvraj and raina put in quick fire 20s or 30s, it will be a huge plus; Bowling looks pretty good and doesn't need any tinkering... Bhuvneshwar and Ashwin hold the key in pace and spin dept. .... Good luck India!

  • kovinbuddi on April 5, 2014, 14:50 GMT

Sl is a Team they do their best when they are hit hard. You can see they have defended very low scoring games. So this Final is a very sentimental game for them.Mahela and Sanga leaving T20, they will want to send these two players at a very high note, like Samy said,Almighty want them to leave at a high note.So this match SL will definitely win. They will win the Toss and put India to bat first and get them all out for a low score around 100 runs. And they will chase it very easily tomorrow. This is the tomorrow I see.

  • on April 5, 2014, 14:47 GMT

    The two teams look evens-stevens.

Batting lineup is comparable, with Kushal, Dilshan, MJ, Sanga, Thiri & Mathews in the SL line-up.

Though India's bowling is clicking well, SL bowling could pose threats. Malinga's swinging yorkers & accuracy. Kulasekara's deceptive slow ones, and change of both pace & swing. Varieties in their spin attack. If we have good purveyors of spin in Ashwin, Mishra & Jadeja; SL have Herath, Senanayage & Mendis…and, one or two more in the reserves. We have to a great extent figured out Mendis; but on his day he can bring out surprises. Herath also can be mastered, but at the cost of more dot-balls than normally tolerable. Senanayake looks non-threatening, but is deceptive.

So, overall it will be an exciting & evenly matched contest. Let us all enjoy it.

It is also nice to notice the absence of acrimonious posts. So happy about that. May be, it is partly a function of the respect Jaya & Sanga command in both the countries, and it is their farewell match.

  • saurabhr868 on April 5, 2014, 14:47 GMT

there will be no nail bitter tomorrow. if india bats firs, india will win by 15 runs and if india bats second india will win by 2 ovrs despair. i know that sanga and mahela are legends, but i think that they are burden for the team as far as this worldcup is concerned. they are unable to play any productive shots. only the almighty can save them from the force named "KOHLI".

Mahela is the man for the finals and I am sure he is gonna perform. I just hope Indian bowling is up to the mark of these greats for the final. I have no worries about Indian Batting though.Play well, may the best team win. Sri lankans, you guys are the best opponents ever. RESPECT :)

Being the finalists continuously for seven years Sri lanka should be given a unmatchable trophy for this consistency.

  • Vishal63 on April 5, 2014, 14:26 GMT

Best Indian XI for tomorrow's final: 1. Rohit Sharma, 2. Ajinkya Rahane, 3. Virat Kohli, 4. Yuvraj Singh, 5. Suresh Raina, 6. MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7. Ravindra Jadeja, 8. R Ashwin, 9. Amit Mishra, 10. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11. Mohammed Shami/Varun Aaron

Subs: Shikhar Dhawan, Stuart Binny, Mohit Sharma, Mohammed Shami/Varun Aaron

I feel India should stick with Rahane because he was able to complement Rohit in a strong and rapid start last match. Yuvraj is likely to keep his place because we all saw what he could do against Australia and Yuvraj may rise to the occasion as he is known to do so. Also, Yuvraj can provide part-time spin if Raina were to be expensive. Lastly, drop Mohit Sharma because he was too expensive an is too slow and also he does not bowl any swing. The Sri Lankans will target him if he plays. Aaron troubled them in the warm-up game but Shami is a better option as he can bowl well and grab wickets at the death. Also, Shami and Aaron have the pace that Mohit lacks.

India all the way. Indian strength is their batting, indian bowling is the bonus which is coming in this series.SL strength is their bowling in the form of malinga and their mystery spinners. But against India none of them will work. Indians can play malinga easily and so their spinners senanayake & herath. In batting only mathews is capable. As for Sangakara & Jayawardene - no harm in retiring on a loosing note. Dont u see greats like Graeme Smith & Kallis signing off in a loosing match.

  • on April 5, 2014, 14:07 GMT

Everything going so good for team India. I am more worried about our batting, batting first is a big advantage as when you're chasing in a final, if you lose a few early wickets or fall behind the asking rate, the pressure can build up and game could go either way. Hoping to see a good final tomorrow. Good luck for Sri Lanka and India.

  • cricktwins on April 5, 2014, 13:57 GMT

Sri Lanka and India are in the finals. Both are equal and talented teams. Sri Lanka has the chance of winning the cup for the first time and pay tribute to their legends. If India wins it will hold 3 titles at the same time. I feel Sri Lanka has the motivation and better reason to win the tournament than india. Both teams know each others strengths and weaknesses very well. I personally want India to win as they are unbeaten in the tournament. Pls fans Respect other team and stop making hatred comments. Enjoy the cricket as a neutral fan at the end of the day it's the CRICKET that wins.

Wish success for SL, bringing joy to 21 million of people of the little nation. Coming so far, leaving giants out of the tournament, consistently is alone a great achievement. Mahela, come with proper plans to control Indians. I personally believe, Thisara should be there as a batsman, who can clear the ropes, even there is no pace. Follow the tactics of Du Plesis, playing late, after spinning and over the top of fielders.

Best of luck SL team and their fans :)

  • Zohair.ul.hasan on April 5, 2014, 13:43 GMT

India's strength is obviously their batting but SL team does bowling better. Kumar and Sharma can't even match with Kulasekara and Malinga. Herath and Sachitra bowl better than Jadeja and Ashwin. Kusal and Dilshan can match shot for shot with Rohit and Rahane. Yuvraj and Sangakkara are both struggling. Lahiru and Raina are more or less equal powers. So do Anjelo and Dhoni. So the fight is between Mahela and Kohli. The one who fires better will help his team win the match. India seems to have the edge but Sri Lanka can blunt that edge with better bowling.

  • on April 5, 2014, 13:38 GMT

What India has to do: 1. Malinga has to be dealt effectively by Rohit and Kohli. Attack him to keep him at bay. Kills the whole SL team morale. Rahane should play anchor. 2. Shami has to bowl in place of Mohit. We need wickets with pace at death. Mohit cant be used in the slog overs. 3. Jadeja has to chip in with a tighter line and get few wickets. 4. Ash and Mish has a big challenge! Nail Sanga and Mahela. 5. Raina and Dhoni should come big tomorrow. Kohli has performed too well and the law of averages loom badly in SL's favour. Yuvi cant be relied on anymore. He should try to play an explosive cameo. Thats the best he can offer. 6. Kumar has to trap Perera early to check the runflow.

...SL is a strong bowling side looking to avenge earlier losses. They are a real threat if India chase.

Mahindra Persaud-Bahamas. As a cricket fan I love quality cricket. Over the years I have had the privilege of watching Asian cricketing greats like Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Amarnath, Vengsarkar, Sachin ,Rahul. Dhoni, Imran Khan, Maindad, Wasim, Waqar, Jayasuriya, Aravinda, Murali, Mahela, Sanga and many more! There are many other outstanding cricketers around the cricketing world but I want to focus on Asia now. Cricket fans from India, Pakistan, SL and Bangladesh should be proud of their history. We must resist the urge to attack each other or our cricketers. Cricket, and by extension, the cricketers, have brought our people together. We must see cricket as a medium to unite our people. When one team wins there will be millions who will be hurting. The winning fans must be mindful of this. Let us be civil in our celebrations. Even if Sanga and Mahela are not given a swansong let us remember them for the great joy they brought us. Let us be like Dhoni. In victory and defeat show love!

  • KrikIndFan on April 5, 2014, 13:24 GMT

SL has done brilliance, especially their bowling, no wonder they keep meeting Ind in finals everytime, but they are known to go in panic mode during finals and thats where Ind has the upper hand. The biggest advantage Ind has is captain cool Dhoni under who the team will never panicked whether they win/loose. Both teams are familiar with each others strengths & weakness. It would be a dream come true for SL especially its fans to beat Ind in a WC final. Good luck to both.

Good to see Sid Monga not complaining about countless Ind vs SL encounters! :) Though the glut was rightly questionable, in recent times Ind & SL have played an ICC semifinal, a tight tri-series final, an engrossing match in the recent Asia Cup and now a world event final. A high profile Ind vs SL game can be memorable indeed, like the examples mentioned above!

The toppers of their respective groups are in the final and it will be a very close and exciting contest between two Asian giants. Mostly India has dominated Sri Lanka in the past but this time I think Sri Lanka has the upper hand. Two of their greatest cricketers Mahela and Sanga will retire after this and they would really want to win this trophy after being part of four lost finals. It would be great if Sri Lanka wins because it would be a good farewell for Mahela and Sanga. They have really done so much for Sri Lankan cricket and they really deserve to win this tournament. All the best to both teams.

If Need a Part Time Bowler : They Can Use Dilshan and Thirimanna. Thirimanna Can Bowl. He Is a Medium Fast Bowler. I Wish Good Luck For Both Teams And Best Team Win The Match!

  • ThePacifist10 on April 5, 2014, 12:53 GMT

Destiny seems to favour the Lankans. They've won the Asia Cup and have played very well in this tournament. The retirements of their legends may provide them with the impetus to take this game from India. They seem fated to win, and let us not forget, they are specialists in this format of the game. India have to be careful.

However, on our side we have a man to whom fate and destiny has no meaning. He has ravaged bowling attacks over the past 3 years and seems more dangerous than Tendulkar in his prime. It all comes down to Virat Kohli. If he doesn't fire tomorrow, it'll take a real effort to bounce back. We have the capability to do so if needed, but we'd like to avoid that. If he does get going tomorrow though, it's curtains for SL.

Mahela and Sanga are worthy cricketers, but I hope SL fans will forgive me if I say that I hope India deny them the swansong they truly deserve. We have the power to do so and we must do so.

Win, lose or tie, team India 'til I die!

  • on April 5, 2014, 12:53 GMT

What i love about current SL team is everyone chip in and on any given day anyone could fire..And the bowling attack is top class..you need to spin to win in these pitches and we have got bowlers for any soft of pitch in the world today. Unlike india of course whose bowling attack is fragile outside the subcontinent, but they revel on these pitches. Surely SL has desperation to win this tournament than India. This is no team that likes to loose which was evident on Asia cup. Hope for the best..

  • Oracle_Magus on April 5, 2014, 12:53 GMT

It's been a wonderful tournament leading to the Grand Finale, with the best teams making it to the finals. Now it's a repetation of the 2011 WC, but in a format. Lankans have various players shining this tour, whereas we have been banking on a few key players. Finals is always a game of nerves and this is where the calmness of the Indian captain will give us the edge. We can Surely see the best contest tomorrow as both teams will be playing the game of their lives. Sadly we have to bid Sanga and Mahela goodbye in this format after tomorrow's match. They had made great contribution to cricket and we wish them the very best on the future endeavours. But being an ardent Indian supporter I would want our team to win. Cheers!

SL 'n Indian fans, Its time to rejoice .Sri Lanka Vs. India has become the ultimate truth of the ICC events. No matter how the tournament is organized or the teams are divided into groups, nobody can mess with this combination. It happens so often that other teams have become somewhat irrelevant or insignificant in the ICC events. So the fans from both countries can really be proud of this moment. Hoping for a cracking final tomorrow !!!!

  • on April 5, 2014, 12:50 GMT

Two of the best teams are in the final. India will not find it as easy as the other games and SL also know that they are against a team that has steam rolled all teams so far. SL have been rather unlucky with tournament finals and it is great a great chance to set it right and what better occasion than this with them coming up against India, the current world champions and CT title holders. For India it will be a great moment if they manage to win since it will add the world T20 title to the other 2 titles they already hold. Fans of both teams should understand and support their teams.

Looking forward to a cracker of a contest... May the best team win.

  • Anubhav-the-Experience on April 5, 2014, 12:49 GMT

It might be emotional match for Sri-Lanka but I do not understand...Its am emotional match for us Indians as well I do not assume Sr-Lankans can understand..India has been trophy starved for so many years before Dhoni came and since world cup win we value each trophy as the best thing that has happened to us...champions trophy was no less which led world commentators to accept us as undisputed world champions.. Scars of Test losses cannot be erased but this certainly helps and gives us belief that there will be a better new start even if totally unrelated the two types of format they are. I know Sri-Lanka has been trophy starved as well for long time and I feel bad for that..2007 must have been painful, I know because 4 years back it was we on the receiving end...I would not forget that sad day... I hope both teams gives us super-exciting game so that even if our side ends up losing, we have at least the factor of entertainment to boast... Or the rain could be a factor. BOL both teams.

  • mzm149 on April 5, 2014, 12:47 GMT

Sri Lanka should play Ajantha Mendis because he has very good record against India. Who can forget his 6 wickets against India in Asia Cup final in 2008. He also took timely wickets of Kohli and Dhawan in this year's Asia Cup.

  • on April 5, 2014, 12:45 GMT

both teams deserved to be in final. both are well inform and playing good cricket. SL lost 1 but that was due to a special innings and dew. other than that they have been very good in past 2-3 months. batting doing good and bowling good as always.

india look good and had a great tournament so far. won all games. they have never been to semi final of t20 since 2007 but this time they are smoothly to the final. bowling has been their main issue in recent past but this time it looked their strong part.

Sl has a good chance of winning 1 after many attempts in last few years. playing 3 rd final of t20 and also been finalist in few odi worldcups but somehow not won any. they have a chance to give a nice farewell for their 2 seniors. whereas india will be looking to grab 3rd trophy in 3rd format.dhoni has been a great captain and had great success.

I just registered here few minutes ago to briefly mention abt possible strategies by two teams. India, specially VK may try to target Malinga and demoralize SL, as he had done before. He did d same thing for SA targeting Steyn. So SL should work out abt 3 diffrent plans to get VK's wickt. SL may send MJ/Thiri to open along eith KJ to upset Indian plans. Two major factors that'll decide result are- hw VK play & mental strength of SL Not having a inform Dhoni is a plus fr SL!! Wish u all the best SL, to lift d tropy & give a grand send off to the two legends!!

Dilshan must play his own game. We want him to score a quick fire 30 off 15 balls rather than a run a ball fifty. We have more players likes of Sanga and Thirimanne to do that. Play Seekuge Prassan ahead of Tisara as he is a more reliable bowling option than Tisara. Besides I have rarely seen him play big shots now a days.

Go lions go. Cricinfo never posted my comments

I am looking forward to this final match, in what has been a good tournament in terms of quality of contests. For India, openers have not been very consistent, and MS Dhoni has not got a chance to bat in pressure situations. Also, the spin trio of Mishra , Ashwin and Jadeja may not pose much threat to SL batsmen. For SL, both Mahela and Sangakkara have declared that this is their last T20 tournament. Now SL players have to grapple with the additional pressure of 'winning it for Mahela and Sanga'. This was unwarranted. The second thing is that India have a well-settled captain in MSD, while SL is captained by about four people on field (Malinga, Mahela, Sanga and Angelo). The third and most important factor is that SL have NOT CHASED a competitive total against a decent opposition in this tournament, while India have done that. But India have not been in a situation where they have had to defend a low total (as SL did against NZ). So it is going to be even. May the better team win!!

Both SL and IND deserved to be in the final as both were best in either group..In test cricket IND far ahead SL..In ODI, IND a few steps ahead SL.But in T20 SL may be a inch or two ahead..But if we consider the current form we can say this Match going to be an evenly poised match..The basic is very clear..If SL bowl first ,the match will be a 50-50 game.if IND bowl first,it will be 75-25(IND-SL)..Best of Luck for Sri Lanka.

Article has not mentioned about two important fact; 1. SL broke the barrier in winning finals recently by winning ASIA CUP final. 2. SL beat India last two times they met each other i.e. in Asia cup and practice T20 match in this WT20.

Hence my money is on SL.

Inshallah my country Sri Lanka will win. Inshallah inshallah inshallah. I want them to win because they have never won t20 World Cup trophy where as India have won the trophy in 2007. I also want them to win because their 2 legends are retiring after this final so I want the team to win the trophy for thr legends. Good luck Sri Lanka from pakistani. Inshallah India will lose tomorrow. May Allahs help be with Sri Lanka tomorrow inshallah.

Sri Lanka should bring in Thisara Perera. In Sri Lanka's perspective, this match will be decided by Sangakkara's and Malinga's performances. Mahela, Kusal, and Dilshan will do what they have been doing throughout the tournament. But Sangakkara has to come among runs in this match. He has been playing well in Bangladesh before this tournament, even played a brilliant hundred against India to win the Asia Cup Match. Malinga is a good bowler at the end against all other teams, but India play well him. So he has to outsmart them. This is gonna be a Big Match because if two teams deserve to be in the Final, they are India and Sri Lanka.

  • csmcsk on April 5, 2014, 12:23 GMT

Indian team in this tournament is tested in chasing big total and restricting opponents to modest total. They were successful in both with bat n ball. So, Srilanka has to do serious math calculation to contain India which is hard to do now. Indians are so confident of beating Srilanka by repeating 2011WC final. At the same time, Srilankans may plan to take 'revenge' of 2011WC loss. Both teams are filled with equal talent. But india looks few inches ahead of lankans in terms of handling pressure. In this case, Dhoni n Co are very much famous. I am eagerly looking forward to this final to enjoy how the minds of players handle the pressure.. pressure.. high pressure.. such a mind game this is going to be rather than skills. ALL THE BEST to both the teams.

well .. As a Sri Lankan , i am proud that again we are in a final... it is not easy to beat this Indian team.. India have not lost any game yet.. they won all games easily..but i can see one bad game for them is around the corner..it may be the tomorrow one.. Gould luck team Sri Lanka .. No matter you win or not .. we are so proud of you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even though I am an Indian supporter, I almost wish that Sangakara & Jayawardene finally win that elusive title. They have been a most elegant combination to watch. God bless them, and may they score a century each, in an Indian win ;)

  • on April 5, 2014, 12:17 GMT

I could be wrong but I suppose SL should opt out Herath for the final and bring in Perera as a pure batsman up the order and Dilshan to roll his wrist during the power play. To beat India since lately SL needs some special effort ,something different and we should strengthen the batting line...My SL team for the final Kusal,Dilshan,Mahela/Perera, Perera/Mahela, Sanga,Thiri, Matthews, Presana, Senanayaka,Kula and Malinga.......If Perera is in the team he should bat while the 3 IND spinners are on sending him towards the end is of no use since lately....

This time srilanka will win if they can maintain kholi raina and dohoni. best side will win.

India gonna repeat the same what was happened 3 years back at the same month. Its been wonderful to see our team winning the memento without losing a single game from the entire tournament. Best wishes for our mighty team India.

  • on April 5, 2014, 12:10 GMT

this time around Sri lanka's way of reaching final is different unlike other tournaments where SL depended on 1 or 2 batsmans but in this world cup top 7 all came into act in some part except Sanga. If Sri lanka is brave enough they should drop sanga and bring thisara in.Kholi made every match easy for India if he gets out early we will see a nervy India for the first time in the tournament

I really respect the indian fans who have posted the wishings for our mahela and sanga. I got to know from an indian friend that they respect and love these two players though some fans post some harsh comments.it is a great pleasure that the sl players are loved in india as well.we as asians shuold happy to get the cup to the asia.so lets share our joy indian sl brothers.

Coming to the match I wish both sanga and mahela to make a victorious final.and the team composition must be a consideration.because if thisara plays or not has to be decided.but whom to be replaced is the question.because thisara is far expensive these days with the ball.but prasanna may be handy against ind as theyhave not used to him.but truely thisara is a genuine t20 player.if he is to be in iI would prefer dilshan or kule to be out.but it is highly unlikely.

Wish all the very best to lions.

Hope the lions roar. Need a fitting send off to SL greats Mahela & Sanga. Same side as the semis . Maybe Mahela should open with Kusal . Keep calm and handle the pressure moments . Bowlers must be economical without leaking runs. Thanks to mahela & sanga for great cricketing memories

  • on April 5, 2014, 12:02 GMT

India surely will play seekku with ease. I don't see any all rounder in SL squad to bowl their 4 overs quota. So bring in Chandimal replacing Seekkuge and ask him to play the role of a finisher-which he can do more reliably than Thisara or seekku. Hoe ever the game plan for us should be Win the toss and bowl first
