Mushfiqur resigns as Bangladesh captain

Mushfiqur Rahim has announced that he will be resigning as Bangladesh captain after the end of the current series. His announcement, which came a few minutes after his team lost the third ODI to Zimbabwe and with it the series, took the BCB and most observers and journalists by surprise but the board has decided to back him as captain.

The post-match press conference in Bulawayo was addressed by vice-captain Mahmudullah but, after his final answer, Mushfiqur lifted his hand to ask the journalists to stay a minute longer.

"I just have one thing to add before we finish," he said in an emotionally charged voice. "I will be stepping down as captain after the last two [Twenty20] matches. I believe that I couldn't lead my team, and I didn't score enough runs. That is why I think we lost the ODI series."

He was asked if there was a problem within the team but, instead of replying, walked out of the room.

The BCB, responding to the news, was full of praise for Mushfiqur and suggested he would have been retained as captain until the home series against New Zealand in October.

"It has come as a surprise to us," the BCB media committee chairman Jalal Yunus said. "We have spoken to him moments after he made the announcement. We believe he is an efficient leader, and upon the team's return on May 15, we will sit and discuss with him face-to-face.

"We will have to take a look at the manager's report, and also find out if he got full cooperation from the other members of the team. His tenure was till the Zimbabwe tour but we will discuss the matter with him. It was perhaps an emotional decision, and it shows how much he cares for the team."

In January, the BCB had extended Mushfiqur's term as captain until the Zimbabwe tour, but he was widely expected to continue in the job until the end of the year.

Well i'm completely shocked by this decision. Perhaps Mushfiqur thinks Bangladesh are well in advance of Zimbabwe as a cricketing team and as such should have won comfortably. The thing is however that Zimbabwe have a pretty decent record when you take all of their hurdles into consideration and a long tradition as a cricketing nation, something I feel counts out in the middle in tight situations, the knowledge passed along through the years from those with experience. This was never going to be a straight forward tour for Bangladesh and the best course would be to take the positives away, namely the performances from Robiul and Nasir and continue to work hard on other areas that are not up to scratch. The fact that Bangladesh has lost the ODI series has very little to do with the leadership of Rahim from behind the stumps. Bangladesh is slowly building quite a strong team core, for Mushfiqur to give away the captaincy on the back of this tour would be a great pity.

  • TigerRoars on May 11, 2013, 3:02 GMT

Mushfiqur has been a good leader. His Achilles' heel has been strategy and in-game tactics. If BCB manages to reverse his decision, they should try to find a good VC, strong in these areas. They need to insist that Mushfiq uses the VC for strategy and tactics. Imran Khan was a great leader, but Miandad was the best tactician in the team. Imran used Miandad's advice a lot.

How many times has Zimbabwe been beaten, thrashed, bludgeoned, outplayed and all of the above and yet Brendan Taylor and the whole team soldiers on? Really, I have no sympathy or respect for this decision because it just shows the arrogance that the Bangladeshis brought into this series and it'll be character building for that whole team to eat huge slices of humble pie. Get over it, stuff happens, move on.

Mushfiq is an emotionally charged person but most importantly he is dedicated to his team & country and he really cares for it. Definitely this sort of attitude can't be taken negatively. People talk about professionalism, strong nerves etc which Mushy has shown before in the previous series. There are few players in our team whose body language doesn't suggest that they are fully committed. We need characters like him leading from the front. I'd rather have a captain who puts the team first than a captain whose objective is to keep his job of captaincy only. There are different sort of leaders in the world but BD need to have the likes of Mushy. And it's great to see fans from bangladesh and people from outer world are backing Mushy.

Mushy, we all love you and we all want you to lead the team, please , come back.

Mush time was kinda mix-Bag .But he is a good leader .And i m sure he will now understand the Value of people who criticize them badly when they loss rather than fake excuses or praises.People who criticize at that time coz stop such a humiliating defeat in future.Because we know such fake praises will only take you to the dark in future while giving a temporary happiness. But all BD except few has shown that bad attitude and pave the way for such a unbelievable defeat against ZIM .Now BD captain will understand who are best and who are bad.Accept defeat with warm heart and love it.So that you can make your mistakes after that. One day you can win the whole world. But Bd just don't accept loss.So there will be no future for them.Listen to what Dhoni says after he won .he says we have done mistakes in the field and we sud not do them in next game.Even after 10 wicket win in ODI he says such. Not in loosing but in winning also he accpt defeat so dat he can learn. That is why he won the WC.

  • rsmehdihasan on May 10, 2013, 6:10 GMT

Now it is up to the selectors how they want to shape future BD cricket team. i can say some of the players are getting more than enough opportunities but even their average is not up to the mark. End of the day, it is all about the average and their temperament according to match situations. Some time i feel sorry for lots of new comers those who are not getting enough opportunities . If this continues then some of the position in BD's top order batting will struggle for few more years. On the other hand some of the top journalists and news papers are backing few players like i can say blindly. that's why those players are getting extra coverage, influence for their ageing carrier. Still i do not know why Mominul was not pick in 3rd one day. This guy is batting well and some how scoring and his average is telling everything. Others top performers in domestic circuit are waiting for long time without any luck. Now there should be some kind of evaluation system for their performance.

Bangladesh team is well disciplined without Shakib andTamim. Recent performance against WI and Sri Lanka series already proved that. Mushfiq must stay as a captain.

  • Rana38 on May 10, 2013, 1:44 GMT

I'm very much surprised and shocked about the decision of Musfiqur Rahim. As per as the performance of bd cric team is very good.I thing bd lose the ODI series because they played between 13 players including ampire and as per as bcb has no specialised batting coach with the team.Now-a-days bd company sponsored all series in and out.Review system should be applied if necessary the price money of man of the match, man of series, winning price money and others can be reduced because bd plays 1 or 2, now-a-days 3 series in a year not having the best result because of bad ampiring mostly. For a different note, my request to musfiqur as well as bd fans and younger brother of your university might not leave the captaincy because we have a goal for up caming Newzealand series ,may tour to India,Asia cup and T20 world cup.

  • the_way_you_play_it on May 10, 2013, 1:05 GMT

I think that Mushfiqur Rahim is very upset that they are way better team when compared to Zimbabwe and should have won hands down, which led to this decision. This is the same arrogance which led to the defeat of the series as well. Taking Zimbabwe lightly on their own backyard leading a team that fails you rather frequently is a big mistake. Having a team which plays superb rarely and upsetting big teams at some times and expecting to beat a underdog hands down is a big mistake. But I respect the captain as he has acheived something that bangladesh has never done before and respect his decision. Expecting the team to do good in future.

  • on May 9, 2013, 22:16 GMT

Being an Indian I admire Mushy for this. Whether BCB accepts this decision or not, he has taken the responsibility. Dhoni can learn from him. India lost 9 tests abroad shamefully and yet Dhoni held on to his captaincy.

At this dire time of the BD Nationhood, please don't quit us, especially when there's a total scarcity of true Leaders here at home. Pls.

  • hasib9 on May 9, 2013, 19:00 GMT

Mushfiq is the best available option for captain in Bangladesh team. I think the selectors should take the blames for the loss. They included Ashraful for SL tour knowing he had a good record against them, which is fine. But for Zim tour they should have dropped him. They also put an untested inexperienced Mominul in number 3. Mominul doesn't play at that position even in first class cricket. This only proved lack of common sense. Then they replaced him with a batsman who is not in form, never had been really and probably hasn't done anything special to earn a spot in the national team, Jahurul. Just look at his average in all form of cricket. There are batsmen with much better stats available. Solid top order would have easily changed the results. Also Zim winning the toss every time didn't help either. So can't really blame Mushfiq.

  • on May 9, 2013, 18:35 GMT

Like many, I am also very much surprised and shocked by Mushfiq's resignation news. Bangladesh hasn't played that badly in recent time to push or prompt Mushfique to take such an emotional decision. It is not only an emotional decision but also a very premature one. Currently, there's no best alternative for the captain post after Mushfiq. He is a performer and also a good reader of the game. He's a courageous leader. If we had lost to a much weaker team then his decision could have been understandable. But, Zimbababwe is no way a weaker team and they are playing on their own soil and in the bouncy wickets where we always have problems. So, loosing to Zimbabwe: it may happen and it's not shameful.

So, Mushfique, please change your decision and be the captain of Bangladesh Cricket Team.

If Mushfique doesn't change his decision, I would suggest Shakib for the captaincy. But, not Tamim or Ashraful or even Abdur Razzak.

  • on May 9, 2013, 18:22 GMT

Sad day for Bangladeshi cricket. They are on road to become a very good side and the internal rift is going to mess it up. From Rahim's language I feel that, it has to do with management or internal players differences.

I will be very dissapointed if they have differences within the team. As I feel that Ban cricketers looks to play like team for their country.

Nasser hussain, should be made captain. Sakib tends to underperform in his captaincy.

Captain Musfique has been an inspiration for Bangladesh Cricket Team. He loves his country he brought out success . More expected Zimbabwe tour-win did not happen that does not mean it was a fiasco of his leadership. He is a young , energetic and devoted player and a great leader of our cricket era. His departure may demoralize the team . I ask Mushfique to stay on and reanalyze the loss in Zimbabwe. His teammates, coaches and manager must review all the videos of the tournament so that all can learn from thier mistakes and team Pscycologist must have session with all as to why they are inconsistent . Why they repeat the same mistakes over and over.

It has to be won,not garanted- the love and passion of cricketlovers from India, Srilanka, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, England...so on.Great achievement Mushfiq and your team. Proud to be a Bangladeshi. You have made us proud. I dont bother about losing the series.

  • Mohammad_Aziz on May 9, 2013, 15:21 GMT

Please make Ashraful the captain, keep him and Shahadat as constant member of the team and rotate everyone else. We may be able to go back to our state of abysmal when the result that we got in this tour was considered as enormous success and all the cricketers would have been promised prizes for winning a one day and a test in Zimbabwe. This way no one will be disappointed with the result anymore. Long live Bangladesh cricket.

  • mhadi on May 9, 2013, 13:25 GMT

Dear Mushfiq.... I have been watching you guys for quite a long time. Listen my fellow brother, Everything negative - pressure, challenges - is all an opportunity for you to rise.

We are truly fortunate to have guys like you, Nasir, Sakib, Tamim, Mahmudullah and it took us while to get them going (so patience) We just need few more pieces and indeed WE SHALL RISE. One little advice - always approach the game with no preset agendas and you'll probably come away surprised at your overall efforts but Love is the force that ignites the spirit and binds teams together.

We're a team that doesn't get down when we get blown out. We've been blown out a bunch of times...... We're used to dealing with that. So shake up and get ready to lead us.

It's a privilege watching you guys grown. Now I will end up with a quote from Alex Ferguson, "You are responsible to each other because when you win a game, you only need eight players to perform well."

    Cheers !!! HM

It is great to see support from neighbouring countries for Mushy. Mushy has done a good job for BD and he is more composed than most BD players. He needs to be supported by BCB and senior players. Our Senior players need to stand up and take responsibility. We do not have many world class players. We have Shakib who is good but prone to throwing away his wicket, We have Tamim who can be good but is not consistent, We have Ashraful - enough said about him. We are left with Mushy, Nasir, Mominul and Mahmudullah. Nasir is the best by far but he is very young and we should let him develop some more without too much pressure, Mominul has good temperament but is very inexperienced. Mushy and Mahmudullah have the best mindset to lead and I think we should stick with them. They have done well and can do better with support from BCB, coaches and senior players. Go Tigers!

Mushfiq should retained as captain at least for a year or two, At least there should be a plan to develop the next captain by then. Efforts need to be made to identify what was the core reason for such decision. To me Mushy is a composed person and a real team man with immense potential of cricketing character and captain who leads by example, so he should carry on eliminating all odds. By best wishes will always be there for him whether or not he remains the captain.

Why Shamshur is not given a chance? Why Shabbir Rahman is not picked for T20s?

  • on May 9, 2013, 11:56 GMT

As a captain, mushfiq is quite okay, but he's not better than shakib in this matter. His bowler rotation method is not adequate to say the least, as he seemed to rely only a few bowlers and doesn't take chances. Although I am in full support for mushfique as a batsman/keeper, I think bangladesh can look for a better captain who has a slightly more open mind. Whatever it is, I wish him all the best. And stop bashing ashraful guys, he is still good for test and t20 and perhaps for 1-dayers he should bat down the order to solidify middle order because he has the ability to rotate strike consistently.

  • Third_Gear on May 9, 2013, 11:28 GMT

Whether win or loss does not matter but BD needs him as captain at least for next 2-3 years. Come back MUSHY.

  • rsmehdihasan on May 9, 2013, 11:27 GMT

Somehow BCB should convince Mushfiq to change his decision. As there is no replacement of Mushfiq right now and it is crucial point of time for BD's cricket development so Musfiq must regain his position as a captain. I think now selectors should decide about non consistent Ashraful. This can not keep going. One player is getting lots of chances than others without any end product. If they want to give more opportunities then give it to new comers like mominul, bijoy, marshal ayub.

  • BanglaBandhu on May 9, 2013, 10:36 GMT

After much consideration I am now thinking that the internal politics has caused Mushi to make this decision.

Mahmadullah has often been regarded as being a very motivational presence in the dressing room for the BD team. Mushi went on record by saying that dropping Mahmudullah was the hardest decision he made.

Then in the ODIs, Mahmdullah's two very strong knocks. In the press conference Mushis says that he is the reason for the losses because he did not score enough runs.

Clearly there has been some pointing of fingers and counter pointing of fingers going on.

  • khurdum on May 9, 2013, 10:34 GMT

Why Ashraful was selected for Zim Tour? Just for doing the same thing what he did during last tour and played vital role in removing Shakib from Captaincy. Tamim was removed from his post also. Bothof them were removed arbitrarily. Ashraful did very bad and he blamed Shakib for his failure with the bat. What happened after that? He got 1 century and said he plays better as a Captain. BCB and selectors does everything with a view to keep Ash in the team ignoring his consecutive poor performance and ignoring good performances of others. In the 1st ODI, ash was out within 10 runs after 1st partnership was broken. In the 2nd ODI, he was out scoring 8 runs only. He could not be choice of any Captain for 3rd or series deciding final and Mushi expressed same opinion with the Management. Management didn't agree and knew the tricks from then. Ash got out in crucial time so that Tamim cannot open his hand. Everybody played under tremendous pressure when 2 wicket fell early. Lastly Conspiracy won

  • Narabavi on May 9, 2013, 10:05 GMT

Tamim Iqbal is not a team player. He should not be the next captain.Mahmudullah is the best option Bangladesh have at the moment.Rising star Nazir Hossain ideal candidate for his deputy I beleive. But I still feel Rahim is by far the best man to do the job.

  • satishchandar on May 9, 2013, 9:57 GMT

I think it is a decision made in haste.. I think this guy looks the most composed to lead the side..

He can't or for the matter of fact, no captain can bat and bowl and field for others.. They didn't have quality pacers to trouble any batting line up and their batting miserably failed them..

With Tamim not a captaincy material and Shakib looks good without captaincy pressure, Bangladesh will have a new captain if Mushfiqur doesn't reconsider the decision.. Which again is a drawback as they don't have a proven performer yet.. Nasir is good but he looks too good player to lose his batting if captaincy pressure affects him..

  • on May 9, 2013, 9:29 GMT

BCB pls make d effort to keep Mushfiq bhai as d captain. He is by far the best captain. The whole country wants his decision to change. Pls do this BCB. And Mushfiq bhai dont break d hearts of so many fans. U r d best captain. Ups and downs happen.

  • Fareen on May 9, 2013, 7:13 GMT

BCB MUST keep backing Mushy. Firstly, he's a better captain than ANY other player in the team and he knows how to motivate people (watch the replay of him backing Ashraful after almost every delivery when he scored 190). We just can't afford to lose him. There's no time to think about his substitute because there's none. He's our best bet and he did exceedingly well after he took over the captaincy reigns. Just one bad series (which is not even his fault as the top order didn't fire and he was the man of the match in the 2nd test too) but that doesn't mean the end of the world.

  • on May 9, 2013, 7:13 GMT

I believe Mushfiq should continue in ODI and T20 as he is best captain and team man available. For test as BD can choose a new leader as he can be groomed to take over the captaincy later. Since BD are more competitive in ODI and T20 it is better for the think tank not to temper with the ODI combinations. Anyways BD needs a lot of improvement in TestMatches thus a captain can try out new measures without the fear of failing. I am an Indian and i still belive Mushfiq is the best logical choice

  • soumyas on May 9, 2013, 7:12 GMT

Poor fellow took the defeat to heart, need to learn to be professional, wins and losses are part of sport, u just need to play quality cricket...should learn from Dhoni, even after loosing 3 test series continuously he kept cool and stayed stand still.

  • 11_Warrior on May 9, 2013, 7:10 GMT

I dont think there is any one bettre then Mushi as captain. I dont see any reason why he should resign. There is no cricketing reason for him to resign. BCB will have sort this and make sure that he lead the side atleast till 2015 WC (if possibele beyond that).

  • on May 9, 2013, 7:04 GMT

I think mishi should learn sum thing from MSD..wen India was not doing well he cud have run away from the captaincy very easily instead he stood tall and backed the boys to regain the lost confidence!!!

  • BOND_OO7 on May 9, 2013, 6:50 GMT

Dont do this ! A series loss doesn't mean its over. Start afresh and move on

  • on May 9, 2013, 6:49 GMT

If anybody should resign, that should be Ashraful. If I was in his shoes I would have asked for resignation before anyone even considered me dropping. I don't believe Ash's mindset is anywhere near where I'm coming from, unfortunately. Mushy, on the other hand is completely the opposite. He is so far, the best leader Bangladesh have ever seen. Mushrafee and Mushfiq that should be the combination. What's up with Mushrafee. Is he ever going to recover from injuries. Musy, don't quit. We need you more than you think we do.

  • BOND_OO7 on May 9, 2013, 6:37 GMT

Mushfiq, we know you felt the pressure of millions expectation as BD fans can bear up defeat against bigger ones but not against Zimbawe. But one away series loss doesn't mean its over. We know there are some off-field issues in this tour and taking those into consideration ,you haven't done that bad. Regroup,Reunite and go forward

  • on May 9, 2013, 6:33 GMT

Mushi, I salute your discision but this is not the time to do this. Instead of step down from captaincy you with all senior player and team management sit together then disscuss. I think some of our senior player should wake up NOW. End of the day YOU are the best captain so far. Please continue your position.

  • on May 9, 2013, 6:23 GMT

    Mushfiq please withdraw your decision!!!

    please!!please! Because u r a Good Captain.

  • QingdaoXI on May 9, 2013, 6:21 GMT

As an outsider, i can see only Mushi is able to captain this side, all other are good players but are immature to take the responsibility or are behaving like no one can drop them from squad. eg. Tamim as immature and Shakib as overhyped, although both are very good players. Mushi should lead this team atleast for next 5-6 years and than the other guy who can handle this responsibility looks he is Nasir Hossain. Big no for Asharful, as some of them have mention give it to ashraful. If Bangladesh wants to succeed more at the higher level, there is one kind request to all you Bangladeshi fans dont over-hyped your cricketers, they are too young and they can lost there path, see what is happening with Shakib, before he was more consistency than now. Bangladesh should look forward and play anamul, monimul and shamsur too. and build the bench strenght. Ashraful is my most favourite bastmen from Bangladesh, as he was the first batsmen who showed the class, but he is flattering now.

  • Al-Mahabub on May 9, 2013, 6:06 GMT

Hi Mushfique! So far my observation on your performance and leadership, I think its very okay. Being a Bangladeshi and a fan of Cricket, I (we) don't to see any change in captaincy at this moment. So, Please give up stepping down from captaincy, our team claims you.

I don't know, If you have any problem with teammate(s) or official(s), please discuss with senior concern persons. Please keep confidence uplift, we have two more games left.

    Thank you

  • on May 9, 2013, 6:02 GMT

@gsingh7, Bangladesh have won the ODI series against West Indies 3-2 under his captaincy, leveled the series against Sri Lanka and a mastered a massive success in last year's Asia Cup. He leaded the team superbly.

  • MRahmanShovon on May 9, 2013, 6:00 GMT

I strongly believe MUshi has the capability to lead BD team for long period. Mushi should continue but need to change player specially Ashraful ( ASHAR FULL) and Jahurul. The failure of the series is not only the cricketer but also management od BD cricket board, why they are not resigning. Come on Mushi, you are doing an excellent job after taking the charge.

  • on May 9, 2013, 5:55 GMT

i dont agree with mushi. at this time he is the only true leader of Bangaldesh

  • Ammo666 on May 9, 2013, 5:50 GMT

Mushfiq should have think much before resigning his captaincy by taking it this much personaly as he was not doing really bad much i must say because BD won more matches under his captaincy & also guiding BD much with his sensible batting being brave & with his talent techniques though he messes things up in such situation but thats a part of the game as he his still experiencing new new things & conditions & everyone, Mushfiq should work in that more firmly & handle more sensibly in such situation especially the bowling change & batting order & importantly should not give up his beleif as its not the time to look back anymore like back those days but forward..... Now if he sticks to his decision i hope he would be off this pressure much & play even more better & whoever comes next as captain to lead the BD team i hope it gets even better & that is what will matter at the end!!

  • on May 9, 2013, 5:49 GMT

very young and energetic captain in world cricket these days. i'm an Indian, but i ask bangladesh cricket board to retain him as the captain

  • on May 9, 2013, 5:46 GMT

Mushfiqur Rahim has done a splendid job as captain. I'm quite surprised about the resignation. But just like helloDolly mentioned, Mushfiq does not have that harsh material in him that Shakib does. If Shakib is able to intelligently cooperate with the Bangladesh Cricket Board, he is the ideal captain for Bangladesh for years to come. He is real captaincy material. He is our best player in arguably every department and his leadership will be essential to this team.

  • apurba.dey on May 9, 2013, 5:43 GMT

Mushfiq please don't do this!!! we don't want to loose our best captain and performer!

  • on May 9, 2013, 5:39 GMT

I don't who will be selected for the next captain position!! Ryad"s position in the team is very unstable. Razzak is an ODI player. Only left Nasir, i think, he is not mature to be a BD captain.

  • gsingh7 on May 9, 2013, 5:36 GMT

Good move. He cud not win any series for Bangladesh in his tenure, it's better he concentrate on his batting first, need a stronger captain after this disheartening defeat t Zimbabwe

  • DINESHCC on May 9, 2013, 5:35 GMT

What else he can do when the whole team failed?

  • gentleme on May 9, 2013, 5:33 GMT

It;s not mushfiq's fault to lose the series. infact because of him bangladesh is able to draw the series. If the top order batsman didn't get run , it's not his fault. he is a good captain. he should not resign.

  • on May 9, 2013, 5:28 GMT

I think what bd and pak is lacking is team spirit... individually they are a best players but as a team they cannot stick together.... but sl team is best coz they can play under any captain.... they already had two best leaders in the team ...mahela and sanga.. BD must have a leader like arjuna or ms dhoni who cn control the team at win or loss.... maybe mushfiq will be good at 30!

  • on May 9, 2013, 5:21 GMT

At this moment, no one to replace Mushi as a captain of Bangladesh. He is a great captain as well as a leader. Just everyone to cooperate him and to perform from their respective position. Mahmudullah can be replaced from his deputy. BCB to be sincere in this regard.

But I must say, this is an new era for BD team that got a captain who shows his guts to announce to resign from his captaincy. Hats Off Mushi. You showed that repeatedly defeated is not a normal phenomenon for BD tigers anymore. Time has changed, isn't it?

  • on May 9, 2013, 5:14 GMT

i think Mushfiq is good captain, its want by Bangladesh.

  • Marktc on May 9, 2013, 5:07 GMT

At first I thought it was a knee jerk reaction to losing. That i understandable. But in that reaction, lies the the lack of maturity and this leads me to believe that perhaps he is not right to captain. A captain should be there for hos players when they are down, to build them up for the future matches...not resign and feel sorry for yourself.

  • on May 9, 2013, 5:02 GMT

hi Musi plz you won't do that because you are a real Fighter our pride of Bangladesh cricket team.If you quit captaincy i think we are gona suffer a lot. Clam down and think about the future.

  • m.moyaz on May 9, 2013, 4:52 GMT

Canada/moyaz: Well mushy I don't think it's your fault in fact it's the top order bats men who failed to perform. Tamim shakib should be more responsible show love for the country and give best. Selector also making mistakes why ashraful played 3 games when out of form, why jahrul who doesn't have good total ever in odi. You are OK mushy but selectors are not. Please keep the position.

  • helloDolly on May 9, 2013, 4:49 GMT

Well!I think it's the right decision;Mush's personality is not up to the par to be a captain; in cricket captaincy is the tool for a team to rise or fall;I don't know how much Mush talked to his team how many meetings were conducted but in the field unity was not visible no discipline at all; seems like every player was no their own and every player yelling out tips to the bowler;Mush never took control it seems.Mush is intelligent but not harsh;look at Imran Kapil Dhoni or Smith Clerk Cook for that matter; the captain is the architect of the team and it's not an easy task;it's like working on a PHD lots of research reading and reaching and at the same time your practice and form cannot be compromised;you can dance as long as you don't loose focus on immediate matters;I don't know how much education these players have but captain must have good educational background to execute judgement and leadership.

  • on May 9, 2013, 4:39 GMT

@Cyborg- I didnt understand how BD felt the pressure when they are expected to beat Zimbabwe. What will happen tomorrow if they have to face teams like SL or Pakistan or NZ? In that sense BD shouldnt even think of playing with SA or England or India as they may crumble even before a ball is bowled This is International cricket and the winner takes it all. So for now, the future of BD cricket doesnt look promising

  • ajithabey on May 9, 2013, 4:38 GMT

Rahim is a very intelligent captain who leads from the front.one loss should not determine whether he should resign from this position. The BCB should encourage him to stay on for the sake of Bangladesh cricket and its future as changing captains after every series is very unprofessional. The captaincy itself should be offered for a longer term unless poor form forces him to step down.

  • G-Rocker on May 9, 2013, 4:22 GMT

Captains are not always successful. Defeat comes in there carrier. Musfic bhaia don't be upset. Stay as the CAPTAIN.

  • Majorraki on May 9, 2013, 2:53 GMT

Its a no brainer that Mushfiqur is Bangladesh's best ever captian, though a very emotional one!!Always comes across as someone ready to blame himself for his teams failure-hope he comes out of this self guilt trap which is not really good for captiancy and continue to lead Bangladesh.

  • on May 9, 2013, 2:08 GMT

Mushfiqur Rahim should be retained as captain. He has done a very good work with the team & will continue to do so. Dont know what happened inside the team, but whatever happened he should be motivated to continue the role. Because at present he is the right choice with performance, acceptibility & leadership quality.

  • KanAloshFozter on May 9, 2013, 1:50 GMT

No, this is stupid. Rahim has been the best captain for the tigers. They came to this series with some impressive performance behind them including drawing against sl and drawing the odi series too. He should just consider this series as an abberation and move on. The NZ series looming.

  • on May 9, 2013, 1:27 GMT

I hope Mushy changes his decision and also I hope that he continues to be the captain. I won't mention anything about the dressing room unsettlement as I will get overboard with it.. Anyways, hoping Mushy changes his decision. By far, our best captain hands down.

  • shuvo_bba on May 9, 2013, 1:27 GMT

Mushy Bangladesh need you now more than any other time ever. Despite all the few deficiencies you bear, you are the utmost perfect person to carry on the job. You have "that thing for a team" & that's why we love you.

  • on May 9, 2013, 1:00 GMT

Being an Indian i would like 2 say to my neighboring country, BD is cricket crazy country and i feel they should grow up their cricketing level as they have already completed more than a decade in international arena. Look at ireland and new zimbabwe team. Check batsmen average of BD Team except Nasir Hussain, no one is near 40... Team BD push yourself for nothing but your country...

  • on May 9, 2013, 0:59 GMT

    Meaninglessly.

I also think it was largely due to Mominul's exclusion from the playing 11. He was pretty solid in the first two matches. I cannot think of a reason to drop him, unless he was injured. And Mushfiq, in particular, is quite fond of Mominul. So, I do think there was an issue with the team management.

Also, another player Mushfiq particularly prefers to have in his team now is Shohag Gazi. I would assume he wanted to play Gazi in the last two ODIs, but the team management forced him to stick to the winning combination.

  • BnH1985Fan on May 9, 2013, 0:51 GMT

As usual Capt. Meanster does not know the issue at hand. BD is not worried about Ireland or Afghanistan .. their immediate need is stability in the team

  • Cricket-Critics on May 9, 2013, 0:45 GMT

Let us honor his decision and let him concentrate on his game. He is one of the smartest player among Team BD. If someday requires we should have believe him that he will get back the captaincy cap again for the nation. He has that ego and that he showed today. Clear sign to become a GREAT LEADER!

  • IAS2009 on May 8, 2013, 23:58 GMT

I am not sure how much toss played a role, may be it did, what missing from BD team is professionalism, time and again team failed to capitalize, the team never plays as team on consistent basis, there is no point quitting, Zimbabwe is not a bad team in their ground, Mushfiq might not be getting 100 percent from team, there should be disciplinary action against player like Aussies did with their players.

I think Mushfiq is good captain, he need good players to win though, the competition is tough, slackers, seniors who under perform should be out, keep trying people with mental strength to improve should be in team. On loosing toss in the series BD should have adapt and play to condition, the stuff you don't control one should have a plan to deal with, like play safe and wait for last 10 overs to attack, all three games the match was lost in first 25 overs. the team is mature enough to gauge the situation, time and again even the senior players failed to do so.

  • on May 8, 2013, 23:55 GMT

Winning and losing matches are common and losing is more common on overseas tours. Therefore one need not resign his captaincy due to losing matches. The team management has to look in o this decision deeply and see whether he received full cooperation from all the players especially the seniors. Otherwise it will keep repeating if you change him without going through the reason for him leaving. Bangladesh have been playing better cricket lately and I still feel Mushy can contribute to the team better than others.

  • on May 8, 2013, 23:27 GMT

After so much progress by Bangladesh in the past year not everything is going to go your way all the time. Mushfiqur has done a great job for Bangladesh to replace such a rare quality will be hard to find.

  • on May 8, 2013, 23:08 GMT

Till today in bd team, many captains were changed or resigned but people never responded like this because they know Mushfiq have been the best captain they ever had. Bd team have improved a lot after his captaincy . He can maintain good relationship, matured and well educated.

Dont blame Mushfiq thinking he did this due to series loss. He is not that type as much as I know. Thr is something else going on in the team since the odi series started. Maybe in team selection his opinions were not respected. No one seems to be interested into the game. Team selection have been very bad.

We will surely miss his cheers behind the stumps and his jokes ! Right now no one seems to be good in taking the responsibility ! Please stop saying Sakib , he might be a good player but not a good captain. We have seen his attitude after getting the power . Tamim no way !! Best option for now is Razzak ! Well mannered and experienced player.

  • helkit on May 8, 2013, 22:45 GMT

mushi bro it's not a good time for resigns....when u feel, someone can better then u,then u can resign....but right now don't do this..i think u should keep captaincy, atleast next worldcup...

  • on May 8, 2013, 21:46 GMT

He is actually the best captain we have had and he will take responsibility, i remember the T20 against WI 3 years ago and against India in the Asia cup.

  • on May 8, 2013, 21:45 GMT

I think he was expecting Bangladesh to whitewash Zimbabwe but it didnt happen. I mean if he resigned because of this series than he is quite dumb because Bangladesh did beat Zimbabwe by 120 runs in 1st Odi which is in fact an annihilation but Zimbabwe played extremely well to bounce back. Also nice to see Mahmadullah regain form and played a responsible knock!

  • LankaGod on May 8, 2013, 21:36 GMT

I can understand that he is emotionally charged, but what an unprofessional way to make an announcement without even informing your team and your own cricket board. Just announce it to the media and I am done.... unprofessional and stupid

  • LankaGod on May 8, 2013, 21:32 GMT

This is what the problem is with Bangladesh.... their fans might see the odd victories here and there... a few upsets over the bigger teams, and rejoice and think that they are a force to reckon with but the fact is they are not yet ready to be in the same league as the big boys, too inconsistent. If Zimbabwe was playing in Bangladesh, they would have still beaten them in the ODIs.

  • on May 8, 2013, 21:21 GMT

Come on Mushfiq! You need some time and you are doing really good so far. WE can loose but hey we also win nowadays. Zimbabwe worked hard and they deserved it. We can get them in next two T-20. Cheer up, we are not done with the series yet. You are becoming a good captain so don't leave the captaincy at this time. A new captain will take more time to be mature. Don't be emotional after loosing a series. Go Bengal Tigers!!!!!

  • Nuria_Rahim15 on May 8, 2013, 21:04 GMT

One thing MUSHY needs to understand is that BD needs him more than human needs food to survive....he can't just give up like this, he is one of the greatest skipper of BANGLADESH and we are very proud of him for making it this far and we want him to continue that way!!! I PRAY TO GOD THAT MUSHY CONTINUES HIS CAPTAINCY AND LEADING BANGLADESH IN THE GREATEST WAY POSSIBLE...

  • on May 8, 2013, 21:00 GMT

  • Cpt.Meanster on May 8, 2013, 20:57 GMT

There goes another captain for Bangladesh. Now who is gonna lead this team ? Bangladesh has a puzzling future indeed. The team is going nowhere and are getting beat by even Zimbabwe. Bangladesh need to do something quick otherwise their position could come under the ICC scanner. Ireland and Afghanistan are waiting.

  • DoraemonBangladesh on May 8, 2013, 20:57 GMT

Now who can be next bangladesh captain? I think it should be given to some experienced players like Abdur RAZZAK.

  • JACK.SPARROW on May 8, 2013, 20:43 GMT

Oh mushfiq c'mon ! At the end of the day its just a game and you may either end up being losing or winning captain but that doesn't even matter. There's nothing to be ashamed of losing to any team. Yes,we do know that Bangladesh is a country where everyone is passionate , emotional about cricket and people expect much from you but that doesn't mean we are not with you at your hard time. I am not that upset with this series loss as much as with your quitting. We are always there for you.

  • on May 8, 2013, 20:43 GMT

Well, this series loss is not the end of the world for Mushi & BD! Zim are good on their home as are we in ours. It was the battle of the close ranked team which has won by the home team! Mushfiq failed with luck to win the toss in each game which was crucial as batting is generally become more easier in later, also the top order of BD consisting Tamim, Shakib, Ashraful & Mushi himself failed in almost every innings! There was no help for the spinners in the pitch as well. Unluckily some decisions of the umpires went against BD too! So the outcome of the series is not a very strange one! But BCB should interrogate too if any non cooperation things happened in the team! I strongly hope that decision of resignation was taken by Mushi is a emotional one, as he is a very honest, patriot and very soft in heart! But there is no other better option of captaincy for BD now. Mushi has only lack of killer instinct & mental toughness! I hope he would reconsider his decision to move forward!

  • robin1283 on May 8, 2013, 20:33 GMT

All of you guyz chill.this is not the end of world.its just a bad time.expectation against zim was sky high and bd players just couldn't handle it.Mushfiqur should remain captain of bd for at least three years more.He is a very fine and brave captain.Dont blame ash and jahurul.they were unlucky to have some surprisingly good delivery on the critical 1st hour of the match.

  • Zee_1203 on May 8, 2013, 20:19 GMT

Being a Pakistani I feel sad for captain, When they play with out Sakib in Sri-Lanka, they played real good, but after the inclusion of Sakib in Zim, they goes down, there must be a grouping in the team. In my opinion he should have to change his decision.

  • dr.vaskar on May 8, 2013, 20:05 GMT

few points to make: 1. Nothing so shameful to loose to Zimbabwe. Accept that they were stronger in every department and we were out of form. So, loosing cannot be an excuse.

    2. Mushfiq is the best option so far. He seems mentally strong, balanced and more cool headed than other candidates for captaincy. None in the team is as composed and gentle behaved in the team like him.

    3. Personally I felt that Sakib and Tamim were not mentally and physically fit. They were absent minded and were not giving the best efforts. There should be a query...

  • on May 8, 2013, 19:50 GMT

I think it is correct decision. Instead of breakout in a fight with team mates, he took the ownership for the mistakes that has been made on and off the field. Bangladesh players have yet to show the discipline that is needed in modern day cricket. Part of the responsibility falls on coaching staff and on field it is all on captain. And Mushi has failed to show that during this tour. Now would could be replacement that is totally different discussion. But Bangladesh team needs a strong leader, who has the guts and attitude to hold players responsible and work with them. Saquib had expressed this issues just before he was removed.

  • raul_abid on May 8, 2013, 19:50 GMT

it's not end of the world------- just forget about this series. it's time to move on. and for all BD players please try to occupy crease for at least 100 runs partnership before taking chances. and the biggest problem is that we can't capitalize any drop chances, just get out playing a rubbish shot. good luck next time.............

  • Htc-Android on May 8, 2013, 19:39 GMT

Poor decision from Rahim. He should have continued on with his captaincy role. BD was doing well under his captaincy. There is nothing shameful in this series loss. If Zimbabwe are to play BD in those slow turning wickets of BD, they would be having a hard time like BD team had in this series. After all they lost to a side that is on par with them. It is also important that BD should have someone captaining the side for a longer period of time.

  • Legaleagle on May 8, 2013, 19:31 GMT

Shahidh Afridi should be made captain of the Bangladesh team. He will show them how to lead and win. :)

  • RK204 on May 8, 2013, 19:31 GMT

I guess there must be something wrong in the dressing room.. :( I know mushi personally ..he is a very strong and very gentle boy..i can understand it's not acceptable to lose against ZIM..:( really feel sorry for him.. BCB need to talk with him...At this moment there is no replacement of him (as a captain) ..

  • Fogu on May 8, 2013, 19:09 GMT

I think Mushy should reconsider. I wouldn't want to put a young kid like Nasir in a pressure position. Mushy is level headed and needs support and training. His performance as a captain is much better. He elevates his game as a captain. The proof is in his batting over the last two years. However, our team selection needs to be looked at. Our top order is a disaster waiting to happen. As soon as we lose two wickets is succession (it happens every game), the other batsmen go in a shell and then try to hit out. Which puts the burden on #5, 6 and 7 batsmen. Shakib is volatile, Tamim does not have the temperament, Mashrafe is always hurt and the rest are too inexperienced. Mushy needs to continue and BCB needs to get their head out of their behind and support the team. Go Tigers!

  • habibarif11 on May 8, 2013, 19:02 GMT

Definitely he will come back as a captain by the request of BCB. But still there should have question to ask, what factors pushed him to take this sort of decision. Is it only emotional ! i guess few things we have need to pointed out. . Success of a team depends on the performance of senior playe followed by juniors. Tamim, shakib, Mushfiq, mahmudullah and razzak are the most senior players. Look at the performance of tamim and sakib for the last couple of games they have played for bangladesh. Sometimes i feel they are not giving 100% and saving their energy for some money making purpose. Sometimes i feel they are not feet for international cricket; their movement and body language pushed me to pointed out this sort of comments. Sakib step out captaincy from captaincy on the same groud mushi holding now. If there have any internal politics then it should be a real problem for bangladesh cricket !

  • on May 8, 2013, 19:01 GMT

i reckon the step taken by mushfiq is a bit too emotional and quite sad in my opinion.. as a bangladeshi...i think we need someone who can lead from the front... someone who can tell the team that they can strand up even after they've fallen...definitely didnt expect such a naive response from mushfiq... sad to see... if our captains fail to stand up to a hurdle so small.. we have no future...

  • on May 8, 2013, 18:56 GMT

i think it would be a great loss to bangladesh if he does not continue as captain..

  • on May 8, 2013, 18:53 GMT

1st of all, i m totally disappointed about Bangladesh's series loss. 16 cores people today believe, that tigers can whitewash Zimbabwe, they have beaten W.I. , Srilanka. we also believe this. But BD loose another series from their rivalry. but they can prove themselves in upcoming series and more, and BD team needs a perfect leader, and i think Mushi is the only good choice for captain. Other promising players like Shakib , Tamim, Nasir have to be free to play their natural game, and captain mushi can load the critical pressure in cool mind , so my request to Mushfiq and BCB board, plz retain mushfiq as captain, if BD wants to reach in top 5 position in ICC Ranking within 2 or 3 years.

  • on May 8, 2013, 18:52 GMT

Mushfiq is the heart of the tigers. An outstanding leader who is well respected & accepted by all. On top of all, the most diplomat captain BD team ever had. This would be escapism & I am sure no cricket lover of BD would want this :(

  • Samudro2106 on May 8, 2013, 18:46 GMT

BCB should change their policy of giving the captains short term tenure. As a captain, if you don't whether you will be retained as the leader or not for the next series, you'll always be under pressure to deliver . The culture of thinking too much negativity about the skipper needs to be changed. In my opinion, after talks with Mushy, BCB should keep him the captain upto the World cup in 2015. And it's very difficult to play multiple roles as the captain, the keeper and one of most crucial batter in the side. If possible Mushy should avoid keeping & give the glovework to Anamul who should be a regular in the team once he comes back.

  • rony1008 on May 8, 2013, 18:39 GMT

Although I think his captaincy in this tour has been sub-par, he is a good captain and as a captain, probably the best choice available currently. But if his resignation is approved by the board, I think this could actually be better for him. With decreasing workload, he can concentrate on his batting.

  • EnayetT on May 8, 2013, 18:39 GMT

Great to see, at least there is one Bangladeshi who has courage to take responsibility which is a rare commodity there....

  • asiacricket1234 on May 8, 2013, 18:33 GMT

So who is going to be our Captain now? Shakib is too Immature, Tamim will not make good captain because of his attitude, Riyad should not even be in Test team. Who else is there??? There are not many player in Bangladesh team that can be regular in all three format and the one that can will not make good captain :O

  • on May 8, 2013, 18:31 GMT

its emotional decision..i think he will change his decision for bangladesh cricket

  • docnafees on May 8, 2013, 18:30 GMT

Mushfiq proved his leadership capabilities. He shows his character by his decision.

  • asiacricket1234 on May 8, 2013, 18:15 GMT

@getsetgopk : No thats what happen when a captain takes responsibility of the failure and step aside because he cares about the team. It is way better than getting in to fight with team mates and Blaming others like one other team does. I got a feeling that you wont understand though

  • BanglaBandhu on May 8, 2013, 18:14 GMT

Mushi was a passionate and motivational leader. Under his captaincy Bangladesh blossomed as evidence by the teams "successes" against WI and SL. He was verg protective of the team despite the bias of the umpirew i this tour and defended his team like a true captain.

The way the article is written and the comments from Yunus of BCB would suggests that there are some internal problems. In the 2nd ODi showed how many of the players seemed distracted or disinterested. Mushi's decision is a loss to BD and there seems to be more than meets the eye.

  • atique018 on May 8, 2013, 18:10 GMT

Please convey the message to Mushi... Bangladesh team needs him as a captain....Just 1 series does not necessarily mean anything, we need sakib-Tamim to be the free birds and crush the oponents...He has got the nerve and thoughts to be a leader...we'll wait for his perfection

  • on May 8, 2013, 18:06 GMT

Anyone who thinks Bangladesh should not be playing Tests or ODIs is downright delusional.

Who on *Earth* should be playing this game then? This is a 200 year old British colonial sport that has been sustained thanks largely to the infatuation of a billion Indians. This sport needs to grow globally in order to survive. And Bangladesh being one of the four major nations from the Indian subcontinent is a natural haven for the game, with Afghanistan being the next big Asian cricketing nation.

Maybe we should look towards dis-banding the West Indies cricket team. After all, each one of those Caribbean nations are by themselves sovereign nations. Why should they be allowed to pool their resources to create one unified team?

BDhas beaten Zim enough times in ODIs, even brownwashed them a few times back in 2006. This 2-1 series loss is nothing more than a minor blip on the long road ahead.

The real victory was already secured with the win in the second Test match, and nothing can dent that.

  • on May 8, 2013, 18:00 GMT

Mr. Akram and co. should have resigned not Mushi coz they didnt give him a good team. 1. Ashraful is good for nothing in the team and also carries bad luck for the team. 2. Jahurul cannot be considred as a cricketer even. 3. Shakib is not in form and just recovred from injury but still selected. 4. Tamim cant play Zim'n first bowllers espcially Vitory, poor performance by him effected the team badly. Overall Bangladeshi selectors selects almost the same team for all 3 formats. They totally prematued. They good crickers certainllty not good selectors.

  • on May 8, 2013, 17:59 GMT

    part 2:

Musfiqur as a captain done excellent job over the years, he is cool and calm like a true leader, know his role in the game, access the situation of the game and play according to it, he is exceptional talent, he has some very good records in runs in the recent times.

He bought as Captain of Bangladesh Cricket Team when our team is total disarray of out of players, he took lots of authority and initiative put our team back on track. So we should forget his contribution as captain and retain him as a captain.

  • cric_info_man on May 8, 2013, 17:58 GMT

good riddance..nothing personal but after you defeat teams like India and SL in the Asia cup and giving Pakistan a run for their money in the final you do expect more from the BD team. He may continue as a player but not captain, BD needs a captain who contributes on regular basis, either with bat or bowl and some leadership experience perhaps at domestic level.

  • on May 8, 2013, 17:58 GMT

    part 1:

Today I'm disappointed that our Bangladesh team lose the most important match of the series, but all in all they played a fantastic cricket in this Zimbabwe tour. This tour some of out of form players find some kind of form, like Zaur Rahman, Rakibul, Mahmudullah and others, some of the inform players upsets by not taking proper instinctive.

Hope Bangladesh team they will find some form and bounce back in the T20 Series, I believe finishing in a high note that all matters. I also believe that Musfigur Rahim is getting too much emotional to declare himself to stepping down as a captain. I think BCB should look into this matter, he is getting to much pressure cause some of the seniors players in the team not doing their job properly, he shouldn't be blame for those players. I'm really happy how Captain Musfiqur perform last few series and tournaments.

  • on May 8, 2013, 17:57 GMT

not good 4 BD cricket. I believe he will remain captain 4 Bangladesh.

  • stalefresh on May 8, 2013, 17:57 GMT

Why is Bangladesh a full member? I don't see any improvement at all in spite of trying various coaches, captains, and training camps.

  • Kusal1 on May 8, 2013, 17:56 GMT

On my point of view Mushfiqur Rahim is one of the great captain. But if he really need, new captain will be Nasir Hossain. Anyway I wish to BD team. Kusal from Sri Lanka.

  • on May 8, 2013, 17:49 GMT

Mushfiq is the best captain of bd cricket team. The first bangladeshi to score 200

  • ashqarmahi on May 8, 2013, 17:47 GMT

Mushfiq is very emotional guy and he plays cricket by heart ... he could not take this loss as we all BD fan were expecting series win....but this is not the last...we will have more series and more games..hope we will win those games under Mushi's captaincy....BCB should take step and retained mushi as captain....we do not have any better option right now .... and please dont put Nasir in this issue...he is a great potential.....Give him time...one day he will be one the best batsman in world cricket ...

  • Raiyan24r on May 8, 2013, 17:31 GMT

well...the result is not good but should Mushfiq step down? who would replace him? there is none. Mahmadullah? but he is just getting in form,Nasir?too inexperienced.Shakib,Tamim shouldn't be given pressure. So, for the sake of the team he should stay as captain. If he MUST then Razzak should be captain for ODIs and T20s but for test, Shakib maybe?

  • BD_Bamboo on May 8, 2013, 17:30 GMT

@Shoeb Reaz Alam. -- interesting comment bro. would u plz elaborate a little bit ? I'm just curious. had utpol shuvro been always criticizing mushy's captaincy on his columns ???

  • getsetgopk on May 8, 2013, 17:29 GMT

Thats what happens when you hype your team to something that its not. There is a reason why cricinfo airs boycott's opinion on here, he knows cricket inside out and when he says that ICC has wasted tons of dollars on this BD side is actually true, BD aren't going anywhere. Wanting to play cricket is one thing but wanting to play top class cricket require a basic skill set in technique and temperament which they dont simply have and going the experience of the past 13 years, they will never have. They will win a test or two every decade and an ODI here and there but thats about it.

  • khurdum on May 8, 2013, 17:28 GMT

Except Nabil Hasan, everyone considered the decision of Mushi either as bad or unwanted and requested Mushi for withdrawal. what prompted him to take this decision? If we go through the news, we will find that Mushi and his vice captain were not available to comments on team's issues. Minhazul Abedin was available & he choose Ashraful to give reasons for failure in the 2nd ODI where ashraful blamed top order batsman collectively but didn't say anything about most poor prformance of himself. Why? During last Zim tour, Bashar did same thing, posed for photo sessions with ashraful leaving aside Skipper and his asstt. We know what happened next. Today, BD lost due to ASHRAFUL WHO GOT OUT AT A TIME WHEN TAMIM GAVE HINTS TO START BIG IN THE 3RD OVER. I am sure as a Captain, Mushi didn't get his team as wanted.Had i been there, i would have dropped ASH, picked Shamsur Rahman to open with Tamim to enable them to score near 300 or more. Selectors liking for ASH COST US THE GAME SERIES & CAPTAIN

  • SarfBD on May 8, 2013, 17:28 GMT

@ Warm_Coffee, please support any other team. Please. And leave our team alone. We don't need fans like you. Good or bad, we will continue to support them.

  • on May 8, 2013, 17:22 GMT

Mushi please don't go .. we also disappoint to see team's weak performances .. But yet we want you as our Captain for long term ... You are a perfect one for us ...

  • on May 8, 2013, 17:22 GMT

Mushi's decision is nothing but reflection of his frustration over the team's performance. Because as a captain, he has very limited room to express his anger. I have even more respect for this guy now for his guts. He sent out a clear message to non performer on how to react when they can't contribute.

I think Mushi is very good caption and BCB should not accept his resignation.

  • Abrar_10 on May 8, 2013, 17:15 GMT

This is not the time to show emotion. Mushfiq is one of the best captain Bangladesh has ever produced, he has got excellent leadership and decision making quality inside him. He should continue as the leader. Moreover, right now Bangladesh does not have effective leader to lead the team.. especially in longer version. Change your decision Mushi bhai. You will be the next world cup captain of Bangladesh.

  • on May 8, 2013, 17:13 GMT

haha...was expected...bangladesh should leave international cricket because they are nt worthy of it...

  • Amjadzats on May 8, 2013, 17:11 GMT

Mush s a gud guy. Very brave and straight forward. I like his concern towards the team

  • M_Rakibul_Islam on May 8, 2013, 17:11 GMT

@ keptalittlelow: The only wrong with Bangladesh cricket is their poor domestic cricket structure. Pitches of all venues r low & slow and no variations in venues, so BD batsmen struggle even against ordinary fast bowlers in away conditions. Per4mance of BD top-orders in this tour is a proof of it.

  • SarfBD on May 8, 2013, 17:10 GMT

Can't believe it. Mushfiq is the best option for us. He is a clam and matured guy. His performance as a captain is exceptional. All senior players failed in this series. Why he needs to resign?

  • on May 8, 2013, 17:07 GMT

Wow this is a shocking news! I dont blame him though, but i want razzak as captain for limited overs and nasir as captain for tests. Sad day for Bangladesh cricket!

  • anilkp on May 8, 2013, 17:06 GMT

Captaincy is not for the chicken-hearted. A captain cannot afford to be too much self-critical. If one does not have inner steel, one must quit. In that sense, Rahim is not a captaincy material, and it is good that he quit. On the other hand, his criticism and attitude towards his and the team's performance is premature and childish. No one expects Bangladesh to roll over other teams consistently. He should have looked at the positives that he instilled into the team during his reign--and there are many. He should have looked at the next best man to lead--which is none, with Shakib already sidelined, and Mashrafe perennially unfit. He should have taken notes from other captains around--neighbors Dhoni and Misbah; or at the least, from Taylor and Sammy who have endured lots of losses. Quitting is no answer. If you do not have the guts to face losses, simply do not take the reign. Life is not all roses. Grow up, man!

  • M_Rakibul_Islam on May 8, 2013, 17:03 GMT

@ Paras Rishi: Great idea mate. Cricket shud played only by 4 richest boards 4m 4 continents- Eng, Ind, Aus, SA. Rest r declining & minnows r not improving. So they shud give up. :P @ drnaveed : Yeah BD will remain same in away conditions outside Asia, unless they prepare some bouncy pitches in domestic (not international) venues. Captaincy isn't a factor here.

  • king78787 on May 8, 2013, 17:03 GMT

New captain will be...Mahmuddlah!!!Gives BD selectors perefct excuse to hav ehim in the side. Serious candidates are... 1. Nasir Hossain (excellent batsmen, gives him oppurtunity to bat MUCH higher) 2. Shakib again(brilliant all rounder, best BD player by miles) 3. Ash (Only one except Shakib,Mush with anything near experience)

  • British_North_America on May 8, 2013, 16:59 GMT

The reason why Mushfiq resigns is that Shakib lost his captaincy after 2011 Zimbabwe series when Bangladesh loosed both test and ODI series. He feels that he has done no better than Shakib. However, what I understand that he is very emotional.

  • on May 8, 2013, 16:59 GMT

Bd fan and sports writer got the lesson for over estimate BD team. They are the responsible for bangladesh downfall. Too much expectation put bd team under pressure. Now on i hope some crazy ,brainless fan and sports writer will refrain. The way they think and write in the news paper looks like BD team is south africa/ aus and think them self like cricket`s greatest pundit.

  • M_Rakibul_Islam on May 8, 2013, 16:58 GMT

He shud continue as captain. In current situation there's no substitute for him in all 3 formats. BD failed in this tour as like other away tours. BCB is mainly liable for this. If they prepared bouncy pitches in domestic venues, BD batsmen & fast bowlers would've per4med better in European, African & Australian conditions. Axing Shakib in 2011 was a waste, so the resignation of Mushi.

  • Mystrious_Faisal on May 8, 2013, 16:58 GMT

I'm quite shocked. I don't know what bad things happened. I think BCB or Team has a problem with him. Whatever he is the best captain Bangladesh ever had. Who knows what is cricket.

  • ashqarmahi on May 8, 2013, 16:56 GMT

BCB should make Mushi to change his decision ... it will be unwise to change captain so frequently .. BD team is improving...just one series loss should not effect so much...by the way we didn't lost series by 3-0 ... and Zimbabwe just out played us ... lets fight what we have left ... win the T20 series by 2-0 ... if not no problem guys ... We will win the next series ..!!

  • on May 8, 2013, 16:54 GMT

Mushi is much emotional. He was a good leader, but probably not the best for BD. Now is the time to bring back Mashrafee as captain and Shakib as vice-captain.

  • on May 8, 2013, 16:54 GMT

Sorry to disagree Paras, but why should BD resign over 1 series? They did look out of sorts in this series, doesn't take away from the fact they are improving though. But these kind of dismal performances really need to become rarer.

I will back Mushfiq here, he was a good captain, but let's face it, he was burdened with the responsibility at way too young a age. I hope his batting becomes better.

I think next captain should be someone senior. Definitely not Mahmudullah/Nasir though, let them stay as they were.

  • on May 8, 2013, 16:54 GMT

he will be the first Bangladeshi captain resigning from the captaincy. not a good news for BD Cricket. currently we have no other matured player and good spoke- parson.

  • on May 8, 2013, 16:49 GMT

there is only one man who can lead the team to good place ashraful

  • Warm_Coffee on May 8, 2013, 16:49 GMT

Everytime these players of ours bring disappointment to us. I think ICC should remove our status now and give to Ireland. We are just not going anywhere. I want to see a successful Bangladesh Cricket team but its not happening. Our bowlers cannot take wickets and batsman do not have the temperament or technique to bat. Plus dropping catches.

  • siddhartha87 on May 8, 2013, 16:47 GMT

Immature decision but hey it's good that this immature guy is quitting as captain. He never had good cricket brain, his captaincy skills were pretty ordinary.Bangladesh had some good results under him mostly due to some good batting and specially due to the emergence of Nasir If i remember correctly Tamim had some disciplinary issue and Sakib already has too many things to do.Mahmadullah looks good to be the next captain. He is a cool customer. Probably they should start grooming Nasir as well by selecting him as the vice captain.

  • on May 8, 2013, 16:43 GMT

Mushi should change his decision. The poor performance of the top order batting was the main reason of losing the series rather than his captaincy. Tigers did well in the preceding series under Mushi and he has a good record as captain since under 19. I think BD need Mushi as captain for at least two more years as the world cup is not too fa. So he should think again and change his decision.

  • on May 8, 2013, 16:42 GMT

plz change your decision mushi... we love you very much... plz come back

  • on May 8, 2013, 16:42 GMT

wtg Mushi that's the way to back fire to make a waking call to the sleepers, when a team is full of NON performers. Carry on BCB, do what U do best & humiliate us in world cricket more.

@ Nabil Hassan forget about Tamim/Shakib, even if angel himself starts to play with our boys still they will not win & as far as it goes being a non performer how to dance in the cricket field with over joy, then it would be better to ask that to our master blaster Caribbean dance master "Ash"...lol

    sad news.................................................................................................

  • on May 8, 2013, 16:40 GMT

It is not about him, it is about the Bangladesh team, where every player should learn to take their own responsibility. As a captain, he has done a lot for the team but not getting proper support from the team. Just look at today's case, Just a simple knock from either Ashraful or Jahurul today, could have led Bangladesh to somewhere around 280. The team can only give glimpse of progress but not consistent performance until unless the mindset is right, and everyone takes the game seriously as if it is their life.

  • Energetic. on May 8, 2013, 16:39 GMT

Mahmudullah, Nasir, Tamim, Razzak will not make good captains. Nasir is far too young and inexperienced to lead a team plus cannot speak English. Razzak doesn't really speak as much and doesn't play Test Cricket. Mahmudullah Test and T20 record isn't that great and Tamim I don't need to explain. Its a real shame we lost to them and back to square 1 again.

well ,it was not much of his fault that BD is on the loosing streak.he has just taken the captain-ship in the last couple of years, whereas ,BD is on the loosing side from the very beginning of their international cricket career. he is not responsible for their poor show overall.one thing more ,even if , the BD board announces players like don bradman, lara , richards , tendulkar , pollock ,etc, to coach their players, the end result is not going to change at all.

  • on May 8, 2013, 16:31 GMT

Guy is upset. This will be reversed once he gets back to BD. There is no one to fill his shoes at this moment. God forbid, BCB does not think of making Mahmudullah or Tamim captain... Mush is one of the most matured person on the team. He is just pissed off today.

  • rsmehdihasan on May 8, 2013, 16:30 GMT

greattt news, he was never a captain material, now izz the time to go for a man who could lead tiger to glory, probably tamim iqbal or shakib ul hassan will be an ideal choice

Immatured decision. Hope, it will be reversed. He is best of Bangladesh, and he tried his best.

Horrible Decision. He is one of the best captain of Bangladesh. He should have taken more time. Perhaps he is very upset, this time. He should not be as emotional as he is now. Winning and Losing is a part of the game. This is just a series lose. Captain please do not take it deeply and rethink your decision.

Don't blame him! I actually thought Bangladesh were going somewhere but they did it again. Maybe our team is a joke!
