Umar Akmal to miss Zimbabwe ODIs, T20s

  shares 30

Umar Akmal, the Pakistan batsman, will miss the limited-overs leg of the Zimbabwe tour. Akmal, who is in the West Indies playing in the Caribbean Premier League, spent a night at the hospital after a seizure on the flight to Jamaica on Wednesday.

The PCB has asked Akmal to return to Pakistan so that he can be further examined by a neurologist. He will be accompanied by a doctor on his return flight as a precautionary measure. Wicketkeeper batsman Sarfraz Ahmed has been named his replacement for the ODIs and the T20s.

The PCB received the confirmation from the West Indies about Akmal's medical condition and decided not to send him on the tour of Zimbabwe.

"He has immediately been called back," the PCB said in a statement. "He will undergo complete medical examination to reassess the level of his fitness, meanwhile National Selection Committee has proposed the name of Sarfraz Ahmad as his replacement for Pakistan ODI and T20 squads for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe."

Akmal, 23, had recently been awarded a cash prize of Rs. 600,000 (USD $6000) for his performances in the limited-overs series against West Indies. He played some valuable knocks during the series and was solid behind the stumps. However, he has had a disappointing run at the CPL, where he is representing the Barbados Tridents, scoring 49 runs at an average of 8.16. Akmal was scheduled to join the Pakistan squad directly in Zimbabwe next week.

The selectors of Cricket Board have always reflected the sign of PURCHIISM and later on, in some cases they changed their decision after great pressure from the public. In television interview Umar Akmal says that he is fit but the Board says that he is unfit and needs to be thoroughly checked in Pakistan. Who is right and who is wrong. If four brothers of one family can play then why not three brothers, if they deserve. The Board and selectors should work in the best interest of the country and nation and should destroy the future of the talented players due to personal grudge. There is still time to call back Umar Akmal, Kamran Akmal and his brother to retain the dignity of Pakistan.

Sarfraz Ahmed.. He's a D list wicket keeper who often drops catches at the domestic circuit. Yup, makes perfect sense why he's back on the team.

I really love this decision by selecting Sarfaraz Again, he help us giving us Asia Cup, he was the highest scorer and hence batted in tough situation, Good luck sarfaraz. umar is the future of Pakistan and he should not be wasted by giving him additional burden on his shoulders..............

My Favourite cricketer ..I love him ....may Allah give him good health...Ameeen after long time I have seen passion and talent togather ..

We pray that Umar Akmal's health is fine and that he gets back to the squad as soon as possible. Although Sarfaraz is arguably a better keeper (I say arguably because Umar has worked on his keeping a lot and I was really impressed in WI series), I find it disturbing that some people are proposing that Umar is not a good batsman and that Sarfaraz comes anywhere close to Umar in batting ability.

Umar Akmal is the best batsman intruduced to Pakistan cricket in the last decade (Misbah was introduced more than 10 years ago). Had he not been dropped he would be the highest ranked Pakistani batsman in the rankings. He was the only one in top 10 before being dropped and is still 2nd highest Pakistani at number 13.

We should bat him at number 4 to maximise his potential. Let's just pray for him and Pakistan cricket and hope that he makes a speedy return iA.

@Jawad Taki: My vote is for Sarfaraz as first choice WK in the team. Umar is yet to prove himself as an accomplish batsman in the team let aside we start consider him a good keeper cum batsman... If given half the chances as that Umar was given Sarfaraz would prove himself a better replacement than both the Akmal bros. Elder one is pathatic, where as Umar needs to focus more on his batting rather then concentrating both on battin & Wk

  • lady_cricket_fan on August 19, 2013, 5:48 GMT

May Allah bless him with health. He is the most exciting talent of Pakistan cricket. but he needs to focus on the game only.

  • on August 18, 2013, 17:31 GMT

you don't just need a wicket-keeper , a wicket-keeper who can bat well in tough situations and sarfaraz has got little to show with his willow.MOIN KHAN has been a great player of pakistan as a wicket-keeper batsman so he should have really gave a thought about it. It would have been a perfect platform in the ZIMBABWE TOUR to introduce RIZWAN or they could have gone for ADNAN AKMAL but not SARFARAZ really

  • on August 18, 2013, 16:41 GMT

he is wicket keeping in pak team, i know about him and his brother domination in the team ,that:s why he is keeping .otherwise sarfaraz ahmad is the best choice of pak team

  • NaeemSatti614 on August 18, 2013, 15:10 GMT

Sarfraz Ahmed is better WK than Akmal's. It good to have another chance for Sarfraz. The people says that his batting is not upto the mark, but they first look that how regular he got the chances. In South Africa he got better in his last test iNN. Than he dropped from the team. I can bet if he got proper regular chances he is more reliable batsman than Kamran Akmal. He is also not in Misbah's good book. But the main thing is that Umar Akmal is most talented batsman in the PaK team. He is not specialist keeper. His injury is because of extra burden on him to hold the glows behind wickets.

all these efforts are to bring KAMI back quite similar to bring as he did in worldcup 2011 when kami dropped taylor catches nad everyone was saying to bring u.akmal behind stumps but may ALLAH bless him with health

  • on August 18, 2013, 10:23 GMT

May GOD give complete health to Umar Akmal and keep him safe & healthy always. Mohammed Rizwan should have been a better choice, although he is part of U23 Pakistan team in Asian Cricket Council Emerging Teams Cup 2013. I hope that Sarfraz Ahmed will make most of this opportunity in both wicket-keeping & batting, in the upcoming Zimbabwe tour.

  • on August 18, 2013, 8:16 GMT

thats not good for pakistan. sarfraz got another chance but so far he has been terrible with bat in all his career.

Poor selection from selectors to send all the youngsters in U23 who have been part of squad in last 10-12 months. M Rozwan could have been called . in fact he would have been 1st choice in ZIM tour.

  • syed.r.karim on August 18, 2013, 4:45 GMT

It ends all the excitement of the tour game. The only players who can play long innings with good strike rate have been left out. I am really hurt by the team selection and now the injury of the best batsman. I can't waste time to watch test matches while the underperforming players(Faisal Iqbal, khurram manzoor, Wahab Riaz) been included.

I think they should give kamran a chance to prove himself. After all he is the best wicket keeper batsmen in the history of pak cricket. He is the best choice at no.3

  • on August 17, 2013, 19:47 GMT

Sarfraz is a better wicketkeeper than any of the Akmal brothers-but not in good books of Misbah. Players should play on merit for Pakistan not on the likes and dislikes of Misbah and his group.

  • on August 17, 2013, 19:40 GMT

@Faizan Khan. Just because M.Rizwan has been picked for the u23 tournament does not mean that he cannot be called up to the senior team. This should have been the case and the pathetic selection continues from the PCB. Some of the selection makes me feel embarrased to be associated with Pak cricket. Blame must go to the shoddy selectors

  • Stark62 on August 17, 2013, 18:39 GMT

@ Faizan Khan Mohammed Rizwan may have been included in the U23 squad but what more important, U23 or the national squad?

I'm sure if you ask Rizwan himself, he would obviously choose to represent Pak against Zimb, plus the quality is much higher and this was the perfect time to induct him.

  • on August 17, 2013, 16:57 GMT

Adnan Akmal was better choice than Sarfraz. However Umar Akmal should be provided best of treament.

  • on August 17, 2013, 16:18 GMT

Do people even follow up on cricketing news or for that matter read other comments on the forms. I have said it many times now that Mohd. Rizwan was selected for the U23 tournament along with the other players, so they were not available. Hence, PCB has to replace them with the next available option. Thanks.

  • huhohuhohuho on August 17, 2013, 16:13 GMT

First of all i hope umar akmal is all right i will pray for him and secondly it is ok that sarfaraz was selected he needs to bring up his confidence but it would have been a better decision to bring in rizwan.

  • Stark62 on August 17, 2013, 15:42 GMT

Pak's best limited overs batsman is out, due to a mysterious illness!!

Why was Sarfraz selected ahead of Mohammed Rizwan?

Sarfraz is a good Test batsman but a horrible T20 player and not that great in ODI's either, hence Rizwan should have been tried because he has performed exceptionally well in the domestic circuit recently.

  • on August 17, 2013, 15:36 GMT

Not giving Rizwan a chance is beyond me.

  • Cricket_Man on August 17, 2013, 15:12 GMT

Muhammad Rizwan was the second choice keeper for limited overs cricket. Promoting Sarfraz before Rizwan shows lack of planning by PCB. Why did they send Rizwan for the West Indies tour when Sarfraz was the second choice keeper. Hard luck Rizwan,

  • Chaudry_Cricket on August 17, 2013, 14:40 GMT

Seriously Umar Akmal should be relived of his wicketkeeper duty and just let him focus on his batting (should bat at no.4). Sarfraz Ahmed should be given this tour as a last chance because I dont think he is international material. Rizwan is better of at the under-23 squad because he will play most if not all of the matches whereas if he goes to zimbo he might get 1 game and if he doesnt impress then well we all know how the senior players and pcb will treat him. (He will be lost in the wilderness).

  • on August 17, 2013, 14:26 GMT
