The Revd Arthur Ward was a capable middle-order batsman for Cambridge University between 1852 and 1854, winning his Blue in 1853 and captaining them in 1854. However, he did not win a Blue in that season after refusing to play as a result of being abused because of his size (he topped 20 stone) in the MCC v Cambridge University game immediately beforehand. Instead, he captained the side from the pavilion. He was for many years the treasurer and president of the CUCC and closely followed all matches.
