Mazhar Hussein, at the height of his career, was perhaps the outstanding cricketer in the UAE squad. Hussein was bitter that only "petty politics and favouritism" denied him his "deserved" oppportunity of playing for his mother country, Pakistan. A compact batsman, blessed with the capability of big hitting, Hussein was the first to score a century for the UAE (122 against Ireland in the ICC Trophy) and a half-century (75 against India in the 1994 Australasia Cup). He rates the latter as his most memorable knock.
His batting stood out as the most attractive in the UAE squad - his keen eye, nimble foot-work and wide repertoire of strokes made him the man to watch when he was out in the middle and on song.
