Buttler out of remainder of the Hundred with calf strain

Jos Buttler, England's limited-overs captain, has been ruled out of the rest of the Hundred with a calf strain.

Buttler has been captaining Manchester Originals, who are joint-third in the men's competition at this stage, and has scored 203 runs in his five innings this season. He injured his calf while fielding, chasing the ball to the boundary, against Southern Brave on Thursday night. He continued to field on the night and laughed off the injury immediately after, telling Sky Sports: "I'm just getting a bit older."

But he missed their win against Northern Superchargers on Sunday night and on Monday was ruled out of the remainder of the competition. Laurie Evans will continue to lead the side in Buttler's absence.

Simon Katich, Originals' head coach, said, "Obviously [we are] disappointed to lose Jos, not just for his batting but also his leadership."

Buttler's availability for England's seven-match T20I series in Pakistan in September is not yet in doubt, but he will be managed carefully ahead of the T20 World Cup, having previously missed the majority of England's white-ball summer in 2021 with a calf injury.

Several other England white-ball players are missing the Hundred because of injuries, too, including Chris Jordan, Jofra Archer, Tymal Mills, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes, while Richard Gleeson is yet to feature for Originals after a series of niggles, most recently a back spasm.

Originals have also lost Andre Russell, who has returned home ahead of the CPL. They are yet to name a replacement but have Ashton Turner available to them.

Their women's team have signed Erin Burns, the Australian allrounder, as a replacement for Deandra Dottin, who has left for the women's CPL.

Elsewhere, Birmingham Phoenix have signed Tanveer Sangha as a replacement for Imran Tahir, who will leave for the CPL after their game on August 28, while Welsh Fire have signed Maddy Green to replace Hayley Matthews, who has also left for the CPL.
