Not out of the race yet - Gambhir

A round-up of IPL news from May 7, 2013

With eight points and only five matches to go, Kolkata Knight Riders may have the lowest chances of making it to the play-offs out of the seven teams still in the race, but their captain Gautam Gambhir is still hoping to sneak through. "We are very much in the race. I haven't heard anyone say that we're out," he said. "A lot of people are saying that we need to win five out of five. But if you see in the last three years teams have qualified in the top four with eight wins."
Gambhir said that the team is aiming to win as many matches as possible. Knight Riders first task will be to beat a strong Mumbai Indians, who are yet to concede a match at Wankhede. "Whether it's the start or the end of a tournament, we always go out there to win. The desperation is always there. Till now, we have approached every game with the same hunger and desperation and it's not that only because we are in a position like this that we are desperate to win."
MCA seek police help to keep Shahrukh out
Shahrukh Khan, the Kolkata Knight Riders owner, attends most of the matches his team plays, but the Mumbai Cricket Association is making sure he is not able to transgress on the five-year ban from entering the Wankhede Stadium imposed on him last year when Knight Riders take on Mumbai Indians. The MCA has sought police help to make sure that Shahrukh is not able to enter the premises. "We wrote a letter to Marine Lines police station today (May 6) asking them not to allow Shahrukh Khan inside the stadium tomorrow," Ravi Savant, the MCA president, said. "This was after the police had asked us to send a letter to that effect."

Chennai Super Kings have built up a reputation of being difficult to beat at home. They boast a very good record at Chepauk across seasons, and in IPL 2013, though they began with two losses there, they've since won four on the trot at home. Away, this year, they've won four in four. According to coach Stephen Fleming, Super Kings have made a concerted effort to improve their away record. "We certainly have honoured ourselves when it comes to our home record. This year we have made a real effort to be good travellers and we have been doing it well," Fleming said ahead of the team's match against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede. "Chennai and Mumbai have a little bit of history already. They have had hard fought games and Mumbai has had the better of us. So we are very determined to play well here." That many teams have been doing consistently well at home is a good sign for the tournament, he said: "I think it's great if there is home and away advantage and disadvantage. It really adds to the competition. When you go away it's a tough game with a tough crowd and if you win, the conditions make that victory much better."
Pollard's finger not fractured
Mumbai Indians had an injury worry ahead of their clash with Chennai Super Kings, with the big-hitting Kieron Pollard having an issue with his finger. Speaking on the eve of the match, keeper Dinesh Karthik said: "Regarding Pollard's finger injury, the call will be taken before the match. He has been practicing, so I'm sure he's feeling better. I don't know what exactly it is, but I know it's not a fracture."
Shah Rukh Khan breaches KKR dressing-room protocol
Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan has apologised for entering his team's change room during their match against Rajasthan Royals on Friday, in what a breach of dressing-room protocol. As per a report in the Times of India, Khan had gone to the dressing room in the mid-innings break, and was asked to leave. "It's my face...people stop me from going to lot of places in stadiums nowadays. I just wanted to tell Gambhir 'well done'. I am sorry, it's my mistake. I forget the rules sometimes," Khan said after the match. "I will try not to do it again, so that I'm not banned from here [Eden Gardens]." The actor was banned from the Wankhede last season, following an altercation with stadium security as he attempted to enter the field of play after Knight Riders' match there. That ban was for five years, and has not been relaxed this season.

Gautam Gambhir, the Kolkata Knight Riders captain, has played down the exchange he was involved in on Friday night, during which he appeared to have argued with Rajasthan Royals captain Rahul Dravid. A tweet from Gambhir's Twitter handle said: "Guys, u have got it all wrong. No harsh words exchanged between me n Rahul bhai. He was n will always be a respected teammate. No fuss plz." The issue seemed to centre around Royals allrounder Shane Watson and Knight Riders batsman Manvinder Bisla. Watson, in his followthrough, allegedly threatened to throw the ball at Bisla, setting off a heated discussion. Dravid attempted to intervene, but Bisla seemed agitated and Gambhir, the non-striker, joined his partner in an exchange with Dravid. In the following over, Gambhir, on being dismissed, appeared to exchange more words with Dravid before walking off.
Dhawan has stepped into Sehwag's shoes for India - Srikkanth
Sunrisers Hyderabad mentor Kris Srikkanth believes opener Shikhar Dhawan not only makes his IPL team a stronger unit, but is also on his way to becoming a major cog in the Indian team. Speaking ahead of Sunrisers' home game against Delhi Daredevils, Srikkanth - who was India's previous chairman of selectors - said: "Sunrisers are very happy with the way things are going. One good thing is the team spirit is very high. With Shikhar Dhawan coming in, batting is also looking strong and nice. That man has got into the shoes of Virender Sehwag and is going to be a crucial member for India." Dhawan grabbed the spotlight on Test debut against Australia in Mohali earlier this year, when he slammed the fastest ton by a Test debutant. He is expected to make it to India's squad for the Champions Trophy in June, in place of the flagging Sehwag.
Dhoni tops lists of cricket's fearsome strikers - Srinath
Chennai Super Kings' strong showing so far in IPL 2013 comes as no surprise according to former India quick Javagal Srinath, given that they have the services of MS Dhoni. In a column in the New Indian Express, Srinath wrote: "Even in a format as fickle as T20, Chennai Super Kings have been a cut above the rest … That should hardly come as a surprise, given that MS Dhoni is at their helm. From the first time I saw him in Nairobi, nearly a decade back in a triangular 'A' tournament, I have followed his progress keenly and with no little pleasure. In Nairobi, Dhoni came across as an uncut diamond, someone capable of brutalising a cricket ball. Experience at the highest level has made him even a smarter batsman. Believe me, I have seen some fearsome strikers of the cricket ball, and Dhoni is right up there on top of my list. The way he accelerates and cuts loose can be breathtaking. Whether the ball is there to be hit or not, he will hit it. Given his approach, it is little short of a miracle that he succeeds as often as he does, but that again is no surprise because of the supreme confidence Dhoni carries with him."

Michael Neser, the Queensland fast bowler, has replaced the injured Ryan Harris in the Kings XI Punjab squad. Harris had returned to Australia last week after being diagnosed with an Achilles tendon injury.
Neser, born in South Africa, moved to Australia at the age of 10. He made his first-class debut for Queensland in 2010. Even though he hasn¹t been a regular in the Queensland side, he has had an impressive stint with Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League.
Chipli joins Delhi Daredevils
Bharat Chipli, the Karnataka batsman, has been signed by Delhi Daredevils as the replacement for the injured batsman Venugopal Rao. Rao injured himself while fielding during the match against Mumbai Indians and returned to the dressing room after being in the field for four overs. Chipli was part of Deccan Chargers the last two seasons.

Raipur's family day out at the IPL

The fans soak in the IPL atmosphere in the tournament's newest host city, Raipur

At the end of the 19th over, with Pune Warriors needing 28 to win, most of the crowd at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh Stadium had begun filing out. Victory for Delhi Daredevils seemed a foregone conclusion and, right then, beating the traffic to get on the highway to home was far more important.
One spectator behind me was trying his best to ensure the crowd didn't leave and he came up with a unique reason: "Match ki izzat karo. Apne munde jeet rahe hain (Respect the match. Our boys are winning.)"
That winning feeling has eluded Daredevils' fans for most of this season. Save for the victory against Mumbai Indians, so comprehensive it seemed the team had turned a corner, Daredevils have never looked like the team that dominated the league stages last year.

Mumbai crowd 'went too far' - Gayle

Chris Gayle has come out in support of his Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli, who was strongly critical of the Mumbai crowd's behaviour during his team's away game at the Wankhede on Saturday. Kohli had said he did not know why there was so much "hatred" towards the opposition in Mumbai. Now Gayle, in a column in Indian newspapers, said the way the crowd treated Kohli was "totally unnecessary". "While you are always going to have to negotiate a partisan crowd when you are the away team, I have to say that the fans who booed Virat in Mumbai went too far," Gayle wrote. "He has done so much for his country and their behaviour towards him was totally unnecessary in my opinion. I totally understand getting behind your own team but it's important to support your own people too. I know this is a common occurrence in footballing culture but I'm totally against this creeping into cricket. That said, we know it's going to keep happening as we move forward and we've just got to be strong-minded about it."
Dhoni picks up over-rate fine
Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni was fined US$20,000 after his side's win against Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai on Sunday, for an over-rate offence. As per an IPL statement, Super Kings were assessed to be two overs behind the required rate after making allowances for various delays. This was Dhoni's first offence of the season and he was penalised as per the IPL's code of conduct.
Fatherhood helping Watson put troubled times behind him
When Shane Watson had left Australia's troubled tour of India earlier this year amid all the controversy about his incomplete 'homework assignment', it was for the birth of his son. Watson returned to the tour later, and has since given up the Australian vice-captaincy. Becoming a father, Watson told PTI, helped him move on from "fractured relationships" and "cleared [the mind] of all the past troubles and helped focus on future". "Having children is one of the most beautiful things in the world," Watson, the Rajasthan Royals allrounder, said. "I have a boy baby now and that has made me more compassionate."
'I can be effective with the old ball too' - Bhuvneshwar
India and Pune Warriors seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who made a name for himself on Australia's recent Test tour of India, believes the perception that he is new-ball bowler who requires helpful conditions to perform is incorrect. "It's true that I have got wickets with the new ball in Test matches but that doesn't mean that I can't bowl with the old ball. Even during the Australia Test series, I have bowled a number of overs with the old ball. I have full confidence that I can be equally effective with the old ball too," Bhuvneshwar told PTI. "And people forget that I have grown up playing on Indian tracks and have bowled huge number of overs on unresponsive Indian tracks. Therefore, I have a fair idea about what length to bowl on these tracks."

'Kohli can overhaul Gayle's 175' - Watson

Watson terms Gayle's innings as 'super human'
Shane Watson might wonder if he actually scored the first hundred of IPL 6. A day after stepping down as Australia's vice-captain, the Rajasthan Royals allrounder scored an effortless 60-ball century against Chennai Super Kings. Michael Hussey spoilt his former Australian's team-mate's party by hitting a match-winning 88. The very next day, Gayle rubbed further salt on Watson's wounds by blasting a record-breaking 30-ball century. Watson missed the Gayle blitz as he was on a flight. Calling Gayle's innings "super human", Watson said that a lot of things need to fall in place in order to score a Twenty20 century, and that is one reason why it is a rare feat only few have achieved. Asked if he could think of any contenders who could break Gayle's record, Watson had one name. "It will be extremely difficult to improve upon. It looks like one of those records that just stay on. When Brendon Mc-Cullum scored 158 for KKR in the first year, we had thought that would stay on, but then Gayle came by. It would need an extraordinary effort to improve Gayle's 175, but having said that, there are always players with potential. Virat Kohli is one person who can do that over time. There has to be some amazing talent to do that." Watson told the Times of India.
Gayle's secret weapon
There are no secrets to Chris Gayle's batting style. A combination of power, timing, alertness and patience has allowed Gayle to evolve into one of the most dangerous batsmen in Twenty20 cricket. To the list, Gayle can now add his most important weapon: the bat. "Having a good bat certainly helps," Gayle wrote in his column in The Hindu. Without revealing the exact weight and dimensions, Gayle said that he carries five bats in his kit bag, each one worked upon precisely by its owner. "There's been a lot of attention on mine (cricket bats) in recent days, with people speculating on how heavy it is. I can tell you that yes, my bat does have some weight on it, but it suits me in the same way that others would go for whatever bat suits them."
How to counter Gayle?
Waqar Younis, the former Pakistan fast bowler, who joined Sunrisers Hyderabad as a bowling consultant this season, says that the only way for a bowler to bounce back against Chris Gayle is to respond positively. According to Waqar, one failure cannot stop a bowler from trying again. "We all saw what happened in the Bangalore - Pune game. If a great hitter like Chris Gayle chooses to attack, then [the] bowlers are bound to be demoralised. But during our playing days, we were always told bowl with a big heart. We were also under tremendous pressure, but trying to bowl better after a bad delivery is the only way out. And I say the same [thing] to my bowlers. Keep trying, you may fail, but if you don't even try, you are bound to fail," Younis told Mail Today.

Gilchrist hails Gayle the game-destroyer

Gayle, a game-destroyer - Gilchrist
Former Australian wicketkeeper
Adam Gilchrist has said Chris Gayle is more than just a game changer. Gilchrist, captain of Kings XI Punjab in the IPL, once dominated the best attacks. He now feels Gayle does the same, and more, as he did on April 23 when he trampled Pune Warriors' bowling attack on the way to a record 30-ball century.
Gayle, who moved from Kolkata Knight Riders to Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011, has been the league's best batsmen for the past three years, including this season, in terms of runs, strike rate and the number of sixes he has hit. "Game-changer? Gayle's a game-destroyer... He's giving not only bowlers nightmares but IPL captains too. Clearly he's taken T20 batting to a new level. The way he's batting is extraordinary and the subcontinental conditions suit him," Gilchrist told the Telegraph.
According to Gilchrist, the Gayle way is to combine his massive strength with opportune timing in order to carry out the strikes and subsequently flatten the opposition. "Timing has to [be] included [in] the way Gayle times his assault... He could take it easy for the first 10-15 balls or, like the other day, go ballistic straightaway."
