Ross Emerson was a long-standing official who hit the headlines when he called Muttiah Muralitharan for throwing several times during an ODI in 1995-96, days after the same bowler had been called in a Test by Darrell Hair. Three years later, Emerson again called Muralitharan - who had been given the all clear in the interim - leading to a showdown with Sri Lanka's captain Arjuna Ranatunga. It was one of several unsavoury incidents in an ill-tempered match, and Emerson was withdrawn from the fray when it subsequently emerged he was on sick leave from his job as an investigating officer with the Western Australian Department of Fair Trading. He was sidelined and did not stand in an international again, only popping up from time to time to make bitter comments against the bowling actions of some players.
