Matthew Kuhnemann

Left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann made his first appearances for Australia in the ODI side during the 2022 tour of Sri Lanka, but it was the following year when his career took a major leap. Called into the Test squad which was touring India, he made a hasty debut in Delhi and then in the next match in Indore he claimed 5 for 16 to set up an Australia victory.

Viewed primarily as an option in Asia, Kuhnemann had to wait two years for his next opportunity but grabbed it with both hands when he claimed 16 wickets in two Tests against Sri Lanka in Galle to spearhead Australia's series win. To add to the achievement, he did it with a recently broken thumb he had sustained in the BBL - where he had forged a successful spin pairing with Mitchell Swepson for Brisbane Heat.

However, in the immediate aftermath of that high point, his career was thrown into jeopardy when he was reported by match officials for a suspect action. But he passed the tests with flying colours and capped the season by being awarded his first central contract. "I've never doubted my bowling action throughout my career," he said.

On the domestic front, Kuhnemann moved from Queensland to Tasmania ahead of the 2024-25 season in search of more regular first-class cricket given he was often behind Swepson in the Sheffield Shield with few venues conducive to playing two frontline spinners.
