One of the pioneers of the game in Madras, SVT Chari was a competent wicketkeeper and a useful tail end batsman who played eight Ranji Trophy matches in the thirties. He got his one and only taste of international cricket when he represented India in the fourth and final `Test' against Jack Ryder's Australian team in his home town in 1935-36. Going in at No 11, he scored 5 and 1 and took one catch in a match which India won by 33 runs to level the four match series. (Partab Ramchand)
