It was an unhelpful pitch for the spinners, yet Panesar troubled all the Pakistani batsmen in a display which had the likes of Derek Underwood licking their lips. Have England found a genuine match-winning spinner, at long last? Regardless, this was perhaps the shot of the week (it was certainly the ball of the week): around the wicket to Younis Khan, it landed on middle-and-leg stump and turned enough to brush the offstump bail. A remarkable ball, and a fine photo too

Despite the rather serious furrowed-brow expression of the auctioneer in this photo, he is holding something very special and exciting indeed. It is Eric Hollies’s England cap. Hollies dismissed Don Bradman in his final Test (Bradman was dismissed for a duck, thus ending hopes of securing a Test batting average of 100). The cap is to be auctioned this week in Australia and is expected to fetch $30,000. It was a week of celebration in Trinidad and Tobago whose fans watched their side fell Nevis in the second semi-final of the Stanford 20/20. Their excitement, exuberance and delight perhaps mirrors the feeling of their side who now face Guyana in the final, with the rare and remarkable prize of a $28 million bounty for the winners. Cricket, perhaps more than most sports, offers so many differing action shots. Bowlers running in; delivering the ball; appealing, swearing and spitting. Batsmen taking guard; playing their shots; treading on their wickets (or tumbling over them, in Inzamam-ul-Haq’s case) – not to mention the outstanding catches in the field. But it’s the impromptu, relaxed photos of players which are of most interest, to me at least. Here are Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Greg Chappell and Rahul Dravid looking decidedly pensive at a function in Bangalore. Cricket laps up every technological innovation and gadget, so it can sometimes be a relief to see photos representing an old tradition…or in this case, an old elephant. Trent Bridge was the venue for the Twenty20’s climax this season when Leicestershire beat the home side Nottinghamshire, and it is estimated that more than 500,000 people have tasted the now familiar format this year alone. Trent Bridge was a picture – in spite of the teeming rain in the final few overs, the fans stayed glued to their seats to provide yet further evidence of the format’s success. They loved it. They were the star attraction for the day...yet, despite the great show, the fans were clearly there for the cricket. After the Babes had strut their stuff in the dying light and shaken their booty - or whatever inappropriate phrase you wish to use - the PA boomed across the outfield. "Well, I hope you enjoyed that," he proffered, in his best Pathe News voice. "The news is that Leicestershire have won the toss and will bat."
