The 200cm allrounder from the small town of Snug in south-east Tasmania has been a late developer, playing a decade of first-class cricket before being called up for his debut Test at the age of 31 in January 2025.

A powerful hard-hitting right-hander, Webster has batted in every spot in the top eight for Tasmania, scoring centuries in all bar the No. 4 and No. 8 position but has settled in recent seasons at No. 6 with outstanding success.

As a bowler, he had long been a handy part-time offspinner before making the switch to medium pace post Covid with the help of then Tasmania coach Adam Griffith. Since switching he has become an outstanding first-class allrounder, bowling from a tall release point at around 130kph with the ability to swing the new ball away from the right-hander but also nip the ball back in off the seam.

In 2023-24 he had a break-out season topping the Sheffield Shield runscoring chart with 938 runs at 58.62. He also took 30 wickets at 29.30 to help Tasmania reach the Shield final. He became just the second player behind Sir Garfield Sobers, in 1963-64, to score more than 900 runs and take more than 30 wickets in the same Shield season.

That earned him the chance to play county cricket for Gloucestershire in the winter of 2024, having played in the One-Day Cup with Essex in 2023.

Another strong start to the 2024-25 season for Tasmania saw him earn a call-up to Australia A, having previously played for Australia A as a project player in 2016. He scored vital runs and took key wickets against India A which saw him called into Australia's Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy ahead of the second Test before making his debut in the fifth Test in Sydney.
