Jonathan Wells

A compact, technically tidy right-hand batter with a sharp cricket brain, Jonathan Wells has built a highly respected domestic career as a middle-order organiser and finisher, most at home in T20 cricket.

Born in Hobart, he spent the early part of his career on the fringes of a strong Tasmania batting line-up. He also produced enough in limited-overs cricket to earn opportunities with Hobart Hurricanes in the early seasons of the BBL.

A mid-career move west to Western Australia brought him his most successful first-class season in 2016-17, when he averaged just under 50 for his 578 runs, but it was in the BBL that Wells truly established his niche. He joined Adelaide Strikers ahead of the 2016-17 tournament and played a supporting role in their title-winning campaign, bringing calm under pressure, quick running between the wickets and clean hitting at the back end of innings. His best season in the tournament came in his last year at Strikers, 2021-22, when he totalled 501 runs, with four fifties, and finished at No. 2 on the tournament run-scorers' list, in Strikers' run to the knockouts. He moved to Melbourne Renegades the following season, adding experience and flexibility to their middle order.
