Paul Walter contributed to Essex's reputation for producing a new generation of pace bowlers from the county leagues as a useful component of the squad that won the 2017 Championship in their first season after gaining promotion. Walter, a left-arm seamer, was able to generate bounce from a tall frame, while providing a solid batting option (he opened regularly in 2nd XI cricket). In 2019, he played all but three games as Essex won their maiden T20 Blast title.

Walter signed his first professional contract for Essex in 2016 as an allrounder after a successful trial period. He first attracted attention in the Essex Premier League when he struck six sixes in an over for Billericay, and later impressed for Hornchurch.
