Sussex hold on after Yorkshire's bold move

A bold declaration from Yorkshire produced an exciting finish at at Headingley as Sussex firstly looked like chasing down 281 in 71 overs but ended up holding out with eight wickets down. Michael Yardy hit 110 after being given an early life Azeem Rafiq in the gully and he held the chase together before he was caught at short cover off David Wainwright. Yorkshire continued to collect regular wickets as Wainwright bowled Robin Martin-Jenkins and Matt Prior was brilliantly run out by Rana Naved for 46. With 29 needed off 29 balls the chase was called off leaving Ollie Rayner and Corey Collymore to secure the draw. Meanwhile, Michael Vaughan spent the day off the field after suffering pain in his knee and is expected to miss Yorkshire's next Championship game.

Zander de Bruyn gave Somerset the final-day honours with figures of 3 for 47, as Lancashire slid to 191 for 6 in their second innings at Old Trafford. Somerset had earlier been bowled out for 343 after an hour's play on the final morning, leaving no prospect of a result, although Paul Horton's 68 ensured against any embarrassment.

Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire played out the expected drawat Edgbaston, but Mark Wagh hit an elegant 147. George Dobell was there.

Jamie Dalrymple's 72 from 162 balls ensured Glamorgan avoided any final-day foul-ups against Surrey at Cardiff, as they cruised past the follow-on target of 218 and condemned the match to a draw. Adam Shantry and Garnett Kruger claimed four wickets apiece as Glamorgan were bowled out for 271, leaving Surrey a token 30 overs in which to bat. The only notable moment of their second innings came when Mark Ramprakash was caught and bowled by Robert Croft for 35 shortly before the close

Essex's hopes of pulling off an unlikely run-chase against Middlesex were thwarted by bad weather at Chelmsford, which limited the final day's action to just 30.1 overs. In that time, Alastair Cook took his overnight score from 43 to 84 not out, as Essex added 80 runs to their overnight 79 for 2, for the loss of two wickets. Matt Walker was caught behind to give Steven Finn his third wicket of the innings, while Mark Pettini was lbw to Murali Karthik for 21. But their victory target of 415 remained well out of reach.

Joe Denly posted his first first-class century of the season and added 181 for the second wicket with Geraint Jones, who was run out for 87, as Kent responded with intent to Leicestershire's total of 403 for 9 declared at Grace Road. By the time stumps were drawn, Denly was unbeaten on 116 in a total of 265 for 2.

Chris Rogers made 104 from 134 balls in his first first-class innings of the season, as Derbyshire made good use of their final-day batting practice against Gloucestershire at Chesterfield. Replying to 403 for 5, Derbyshire reached near-parity on 402 for 8 before the game was mercifully called to an end.
