Smartt and Dottin crush New Zealand

Fast bowler Tremayne Smartt claimed her maiden five-wicket haul in one-day internationals to bowl West Indies women to a comfortable victory in the first match against New Zealand women in St Kitts. The visitors were dismissed for 142 in 44.1 overs, after which Deandra Dottin led the successful chase with a half-century.

Having chosen to bat, New Zealand captain Suzie Bates could not capitalise on her decision. She was bowled for a duck in the first over and became the first of Smartt's victims. Smartt had Sara McGlashan lbw for 1 in her second over, and New Zealand were 2 for 2.

The middle order of Amy Satterthwaite, Sophie Devine and Katie Perkins scored 30s to steady the innings but none of them kicked on to a big score. New Zealand were 129 for 4 in the 38th over but once Smartt dismissed Devine for 36, the end came quickly. New Zealand lost six wickets for 13 runs, as Smartt finished with 5 for 24 and Shanel Daley with 2 for 32.

West Indies were never in trouble in their chase. Dottin came in with the score at 32 for 2 in the 13th over and left when it was 126 for 4 in the 36th. She made 60 off the 94 runs scored while she was at the crease and struck seven fours and a six in her 77-ball innings. Bates removed her and the West Indies captain Merissa Aguilleira off successive deliveries but those blows came too late to derail the chase.

The hosts won with 59 balls to spare.
