Back of a length and he pulls it away to deep midwicket. And it looks like it is raining again. Covers are coming on
Bangladesh vs Afghanistan, 1st ODI at Chattogram, BAN v AFG, Jul 05 2023 - Match Result
Afghanistan won by 17 runs (DLS method)
11.02pm Right then, that will be that from Chattogram today. We had rain breaks, but some good cricket in between. Hopefully less of the former and more of the latter when we return on Saturday for the second ODI. Until then, thanks and goodnight! This is Abhimanyu, signing off on behalf of Ekanth and Venkat and everyone else at ESPNcricinfo.
10.55pm Time for the presentation ceremony.
Now, Shahidi: "I think our bowlers did very well. Stuck to plans and on the field we were very good. Nabi's catch changed the game for us. [On the chase] The way Gurbaz and Ibrahim started, that's what we were expecting from them. Told them to not rush, score is not that bad. Have to play accordingly. Just play out the first ten overs and leave the risk to other players. [On Farooqi] He's okay, it was just cramps. He will recover [ahead of the next game]."
Player of the match, Fazalhaq Farooqi, with Shahidi translating: "I wanted to bowl in right areas. My aim was that and I achieved that."
Tamim Iqbal (and this is not verbatim): I thought the weather and the other things, I don't think we need to blame the other things. I think we had a very good start, but then we lost our way, we lost back-to-back wickets twice. And there were no unbelievable balls or unplayable balls. And when you put on 169, it's not enough. This wicket was a little tricky. If we put up 250-260, it would have been good. [On Hridoy] Every time he goes out to bat, he impresses everyone.
10.40pm Thanks Ekanth. Well, at least we have a result! Afghanistan seemed to have a stranglehold on the game right from the time Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto fell in quick succession. The two rain breaks in the first innings only helped Bangladesh avoid getting bowled out, but Towhid Hridoy's fighting fifty was not enough to get them close to a big enough total in what was going to be a shortened game anyway. Bangladesh bowlers kept things tight, but Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz hung around, with the former especially keeping things ticking. Gurbaz was out trying to go for a big shot but Zadran kept going. By the time Rahmat Shah got out, Afghanistan were already ahead of the DLS par score. HD Ackermann says on air that Fazalhaq Farooqi's injury, for which he went off after bowling four deliveries of his last over, is not serious and he should be fit for the next game.
10:35pm: Unfortunately, the first ODI has come to a wet end is the call from on-air comms. Afghanistan win by 17 runs on DLS is the verdict. Post-match presentation will be on in a bit. So will Abhimanyu to report it here.
10:20pm: Mohammad Isam pings that If there's no further rain, then the match will resume at 10:35pm local time. The revised target will be 111 runs in 29 overs, which will mean 28 runs needed in the remaining 7.2 overs . A few seconds later, the text he sent reads 'Covers back on'. I don't know how to feel about any of this. Well, the square does get covered. But there are a few people surrounding it. Make of that what you will. At 10:27pm, the covers are removed from the square again. At 10:29pm, they are back on. "More drizzle," informs Isam.
Aziz El Sabri: "As an Afghan fan, it's always great to win with hitting boundary then never coming down to playing field. So we would love to see a winning run coming of Ibrahim Zadran's bat."
10:10pm: The green covers above and below the blue ones are coming off. So the rain doesn't seem to be an issue anymore.
Ollie: "Is it even worth coming back on? What will Afghanistan need, another 5 runs with 8 wickets in hand or something daft? "
9:55pm: Drizzle still on but a few people have now congregated around the covers. An umbrella goes up in the chat. No clear indications of what'll happen, yet.
9:45pm: Thanks, Abhimanyu. Round 3 of rain interruptions could land the knockout punch. The green squares are being brought on to supplement the blue ones on the pitch and squares. Overs will be lost if play restarts, given two overs or so have been lost already.
Benji: "Got to congratulate the Afghanistan openers on what a superb job they did in the face of some superb early bowling, could easily have lost 3 or 4 wickets then Bangladesh would be ahead on DLS but they stood firm "
9.35pm So, a third rain interruption as the groundstaff bring the covers on! This means, we will lose more overs. Also, if there is no more play possible, Afghanistan will win. The par score for them, for the loss of two wickets, is 66, so Afghanistan are well ahead. Stay tuned for more updates as the rain comes down in Chattogram. Ekanth will be here to share any new news with you!
Banged in back of a length on leg, and angling towards off again. Shahidi was cramped for room as he was shuffling across but manages to block it
Full just outside off and he shuffles across and whips it to deep midwicket's right for a brace
Bowls it on a length and angling across from leg to off, Shahidi defends firmly
Taskin vs Shahidi again. Two slips
Full on off, he leans across and flicks it away and mid-on can't dive and stop it as the ball travels to the boundary
Tanvir : "Is there any more chances of rain ahead? Who is ahead in DLS now?" Afghanistan are ahead currently, I believe.
Slightly back of length around off, he shuffles across and pulls it out to deep midwicket
Length ball jags in from outside off. Goes past the inside edge as he looks to flick
Jeff: "DLS after 20 overs is 104? That seems very very high for a chase of 164 in 43 overs?" This was at the start of the innings. With more overs played, the target changes.
Length ball, wide of off. Shahidi looks to drive but is beaten on the outside edge
Around the wicket now
Mahmud bangs it in short and Shahidi pulls it hard and fast past Litton, who tried to get his hands to it but it races past and away to the rope
Litton Das now at short leg
Full on off, driven to mid-off
Shahidi beats the short leg with his pull! Taskin banged it in short on leg, but Shahidi could get this past the fielder and along the ground to deep backward square
Right now, Mehidy is at short leg!
Asif Inzamam : "Baffling to keep Meraz out when spinners have done so well so far."
Taskin is all over Shahidi! On a length on leg, Shahidi tries to work it away leg-side and it brushes his thigh and lands before the keeper
Now a bouncer from Taskin on leg-side. Shahidi ducks underneath successfully. Remember, that in the one-off Test, Shahidi was hit on the head due to a bouncer from Taskin staying low and had to go off with a concussion sub replacing him
Almost chops on first ball! Back of a length around middle and going away from him, he goes for the cuts and almost inside-edges it onto the stumps!
Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi is in
The edge is taken! Taskin pitches it on a length outside off, the ball straightens just a bit as Rahmat Shah pokes at it and it's a brilliant tumbling catch by Litton Das at first slip
Goes short just outside off and he runs it down to deep third
Taskin, from over the wicket
Goes for the yorker and he just gets some bat onto it onto his foot and the ball rolls forward towards midwicket
Top-edge goes to the boundary! Banged in short outside off, Zadran is all at sea as he tries to pull and the ball balloons up off the top edge to the wicketkeeper's left. Deep fine can't get there and Afghanistan get some crucial runs
Fahim: "@Espncricinfo, What is the DLS per score after 20 overs?" It was 104 at the start of the innings
Mahmud goes short and he pulls it along the ground through midwicket
Oh, shot! Slightly short and had enough width for Rahmat Shah to open the face of the bat and guide it behind square with the pace of the ball and it goes all the way to the ropes
