cracked hard out through the covers, but it's academic. Glamorgan seal the Metro Bank Cup!
Glamorgan vs Somerset, Final at Nottingham, One-Day Cup, Sep 22 2024 - Ball by Ball Commentary
2.33pm And with that, Carlson wanders off to lift the trophy with his team, and here ends the Metro Bank One-Day Cup final. An unconventional two days at Trent Bridge, but a worthy winner emerges from an engrossing contest. From Miller and Alan, thanks for tuning in, see you [checks notes] at Durham tomorrow, for the third ODI!
Time for the presentations. The MBODC Player of the Year goes to Warwickshire's Ed Barnard, for the second season running.
The Player of the Match is Sam Northeast: "It does feel amazing to get the game on, didn't think we would. Tight in the end but great to get over the line. Had to get a score, did a little early on, then got a few away. Some momentum into the back end then the boys did brilliantly. Been a fantastic club to move to, a bit of experience probably helped, enjoyable day."
Sean Dickson: "Hats off to these guys, we gave it our all but it wasn't meant to be. Credit to Glamorgan. We started well, Ogborne is a good talent, but with the wet conditions we were slipping and sliding. That's the medicine we have to take. A couple of wickets changed the momentum of the game."
Kiran Carlson: "Obviously great, it's what we set out to do, massive credit to Trent Bridge groundstaff for letting us get a game in. It's a tough old season for fans, a lot of ups and down, glad we've got something to cheer. Dan's showed his skills at the death, Somerset gave it a great crack, glad to close it out and now the celebrations can start."
2.20pm The circumstances haven't dented Glamorgan's joy, however. Gleeful scenes on the outfield. But a penny for Somerset's thoughts. Dreams of a treble after their stirring win over Surrey in the Championship earlier this month, and now they've been stuffed in both one-day finals, with only a dead-rubber against Hampshire to come.
Dan Douthwaite: "Thankfully I nailed my first ball, got the slower ball in, Timmy caught it... thankfully we got the job done. Sam... I'll forgive him for running me out... but he stood up today when we were struggling, Timmy gave us momentum. Until today my fondest memory was 2021, I was passionate about going one better in the final again."
Joshua: "Exactly the same as 2010 for Somerset. Runners-up in all three competitions!"
Smiffy: "So pleased for everyone who went to the ground, sympathies to Somerset and congrats to Glamorgan!"
2.17pm Incredible scenes, in the literal sense. No-one gave this day a prayer when looking at the forecast, but the rain has just about held off, and some sensible match management has ensured that this showcase has reached a finale of sorts... even if the bleak weather and virtually empty stands rather confirm the extent to which this poor competition has been shoved to the margins.
In fact, it is properly wet now... we've got there in the nick of time!
Gerry: "Somerset gave 9 wides away. Nine runs, plus nine extra balls. Made the difference."
hoisted across the line, pace off, hops over the bails. Somerset's challenge is very much over
heaved down the ground, languid levers, but can't reach the rope as two men swoop
blammed out to extra cover, and the sparse cheers from the crowd confirm that Glamorgan are mathematically home
It looks to be raining pretty heavily now, but no danger that they'll be going off the field with four balls left
heaved straight up in the air, out to square leg! Well judged by van der Gugten, and that is going to be that! Another full-length delivery, demanding that Green put the muscle through the ball, but he couldn't manage it
the keeper is excited about this... and we are going upstairs. It was a full-toss, a swing across the line, heading through his legs. Ends up in the keeper's hands, but that flicked the pad, down the leg-side. Umpire's call on leg stump, in fact. Closer than it looked, but crucially a dot-ball
Right, we are into the end-game. Green's levers, with a short leg-side boundary to aim for. And probably three sixes needed
firm blat down the ground, long-on rushes in, Vaughan gets back for the second as he clatters into Smale... only just made it... the keeper had too far to stretch
Vaughan lines up the scoop, but it's another slower ball, no pace to lift it over the keeper, and he misses out
This must go, surely
steps into the length, drilled hard to cover... that's not going to cut it
pace off, cunning, Vaughan swings but the ball never quite arrives and hops over his bails
Richard: "It wouldn't be county cricket without a little bit of comedy chaos..."
yanked across the line, out to deep square leg. Somerset must find the boundary... probably twice in this over
urgent punch off the back foot, straight to cover
hoisted out to deep cover, and it is all happening! It looked like the simplest of chances in the deep, but somehow it kept swirling out of Carlson's reach... then Vaughan was caught ball-watching and should have been run-out... but Gorvin gathered and had the stumps at his mercy... but missed from five yards!
very wide, swinging away, the batter was set up outside off, but that was over-doing it
reverses his hands, chases the wide line, spanks it straight to short third! A yard either side and that was another four... if he'd left it, it was an extra run anyway. The end of a mighty knock from the skipper... is it mighty enough?
width on the full length, hacked up and over deep third ... profitable area!
Something has to go in this over, you sense...
very full again, aiming for the wide yorker, Vaughan toe-ends his drive to long-on
very wide outside off, chases it with a slap to deep point
full toss, on the pads, nudged to the on-side
