short ball at middle stump, pulled out to deep square and that's the win
New Zealand vs Pakistan, 2nd ODI at Nelson, Jan 09 2018 - Ball by Ball Commentary
New Zealand won by 8 wickets (with 7 balls remaining) (D/L method)
7:34pm That's all from our coverage. We hope you had a good time, particularly during the most engaging rain break we've had on our site for a long time. Here's hoping we have an uninterrupted game the next time. On behalf of Nikhil and Raghav, I take your leave.
Martin Guptill: We got off to a good start. Of course, losing Colin wasn't ideal. I spent most of my time during the break on the physio bed. Ross [Taylor] is quite a claming influnce. It was nice to have him there and see it through to the end.
Kane Williamson: Yeah it was a brilliant perfoemance. I think for the first half we were brilliant with the ball and then Pakistan showed resistance. It worked in our favour to have Guptill out there. Martin playing with that freedom was great to watch.
Sarfraz Ahmed: Very disappointing performance. Our batting didn't do well and we needed lower order to perform. It was very disapponting. [I know] the rain isn't in our hands, but when it came down the momentum was in our favour. We lost too many wickets in the first ten overs. Inshallah, we'll bounce back.
Martin Guptill is the Man of the Match.
7:17pm A lot of complex math later, New Zealand have won this. Pakistan's play was long term, and they expected their spinners to come in and strange New Zealand. Might have worked for them too after having them 64 for 2 in 14 overs. However, the rain changed that equation. To some extent, their own middle order batting changed that equation too. New Zealand could have easily been chasing 151 in 50 overs if Pakistan's lower order didn't come in and rescue them. A stunning assault from Hasan Ali, with his 30-ball fifty, and a calm innings from Shadab Khan who was forced to take more responsibility than he should be taking at No. 7. Pakistan crawled their way back in, but suddenly found everything about the game suited one man - Martin Guptill.
yorker on leg stump, clipped to fine leg
yorker on off stump, squeezed into the off side
short and wide outside off, looks to cut and can't make connection. This was a slower ball and it gripped to climb over the bat
back of a length and angled across off, dabbed straight to point
good length outside off, driven on the up to long-off
That's hundred now between these two
good length outside off, poked to point
googly. Nicely done. He goes on the back foot for the cut and is forced to block it
If anyone's still keeping track, getting eight wickets is the only way Pakistan can win. New Zealand have beaten par even for nine wickets down.
short ball outside off, chopped to sweeper cover
short ball outside off, chopped straight to point
good length on off stump, blocked on the front foot
drops it short, gets punished. It's into Guptill's body, he's nicely under it and swings cleanly to send a long, loopy one over the boundary
another bouncer. Dug in too short. He leaves it alone
top edge as he takes on the bouncer this time. Clears the keeper. Guptill was too far away from the ball for the hook
Wasim Qadir: "Yes, they are ahead but couple of wickets (which don't seem to be coming) can still change the scenario.."
bounce in the corridor, shapes to pull and is forced to let it go
yorker just outside off, squeezed out to sweeper cover
short ball on middle stump, gets under this and looks to pull on the front foot. Ends up slicing it to deep square's left
At the end of the 21st over, New Zealand are 20 ahead of the par score should we lose this match to rain.
good length wide outside off, slashes to try and drive this square on the up. Beaten
tossed up outside off, drives to long-on
short and turning away outside off, tapped through the covers
