Cliff has the edge for Leicestershire

Sam Cliff, the 20-year-old fast bowler, was Leicestershire's unlikely hero, taking four wickets in a tight six-run win against Derbyshire at Grace Road. In his two previous one-day matches he had gone wicketless when first change, his six-over spells going for 47 and 45, but on Monday when opening he took the first three victims to leave a shell-shocked Derbyshire 10 for 3 and then he later claimed another to end with 4 for 26 from 8 overs. Leicestershire had managed 183 thanks in main to a late rally from James Taylor, who made 46 not out. Chris Rogers did his best to push his side along, with 61, and Tom New was unbeaten on 36, but they fell just short.

Glamorgan kept their promotion push going forward by managing to defend 155 in a 12-run victory against Northamptonshire at Northampton. Tom Maynard topscored for the visitors with 46 but they were still in trouble on 109 for 5 when he fell and they were to slip further as Northamptonshire's bowlers shared the wickets around. But Glamorgan's bowlers kept things tight, too, and each of the six of them took at least one victim. Niall O'Brien and Riki Wessels were Northants' batting mainstays but when they both perished in their thirties - to Robert Croft and Alex Wharf respectively - so did the home side's chances.

Jade Dernbach and Usman Afzaal bowled Surrey to a 21-run win against Warwickshire at Edgbaston after fifties from James Benning and Mark Ramprakash had lifted them to 238 for 5. Benning made 74 before Ramprakash and Matthew Spriegel put on an unbroken 87 to give them a timely boost. Dernbach then claimed four scalps and Afzaal three as Surrey managed to defend their total fairly comfortably despite the ever-present threat of Jonathan Trott who made 92. Jim Troughton also contributed 42.
