Phil Jaques ended his run of poor form in emphatic fashion with an unbeaten 192 as New South Wales completely dominated the first day against Tasmania at Sydney. Ed Cowan, who made 108, and Jaques pushed the Blues towards a huge first-innings total and at stumps they were 2 for 373.
Jaques, who has averaged 13.80 in his last five Pura Cup matches, batted right through the day after the Blues chose to bat and his 183-run opening stand with Cowan set up a demoralising day for Tasmania. The visitors had only themselves to blame after repeatedly dropping Jaques. Brendan Drew put down a tough chance when Jaques was 21 but Damien Wright's miss when the batsman was 53 should have been taken. Dane Anderson, the 12th man, then grassed a sitter at fine leg when Jaques was on 71.
Cowan made his second first-class century and his first for New South Wales, before he finally edged Xavier Doherty to Dan Marsh at slip. But worse was to come for the Tigers, when Marsh missed a tough chance to catch Simon Katich for 0. Katich went on to make 54 and put on 112 with Jaques before becoming Doherty's second victim.
The four fast bowlers' inability to break through - between them they bowled 61 overs and took 0 for 217 - continued in the final session as Jaques and Dominic Thornely (13 not out) built an unbeaten 78-run partnership to guide New South Wales into a commanding position at stumps.
