Brad Hodge and Nick Jewell turned the match around in the most emphatic style, batting throughout the day in a 353-run partnership that capitalised on Queensland's severely injury-depleted attack. Hodge finished unbeaten on 202 and Jewell was on 182 as Victoria reached 2 for 426 at stumps, with a lead of 198.
The remarkable turnaround means the Bulls will face a challenging final-day chase despite securing a 228-run first-innings advantage. Their big problem was that neither of their strike bowlers were available in the second innings - Ashley Noffke will miss a week after tearing his hamstring while batting and Andy Bichel broke a finger taking a catch on the first day.
That left a mountain of work for the inexperienced Grant Sullivan and Chris Swan as well as the offspinners Aaron Nye and Chris Simpson. Even Ryan Broad, who sent down a couple of overs of medium pace, broke down with a side strain to reduce Jimmy Maher's options even further.
Hodge and Jewell liked that prospect and denied Queensland any wickets for the day after Hodge had come to the crease for the final ball of day two. His double-century featured 27 fours and three sixes, and came shortly before stumps from his 299th delivery.
At the other end Jewell registered his fourth Pura Cup century and his highest first-class score, confirming that he has matured into a reliable opener capable of lengthy stays. His 325-ball innings included 23 fours and he will be keen to pounce on his first double-century as quickly as possible on the fourth day.
