there's the win. Short ball in at middle stump. Watches it come on and shovels it through square leg with a short-arm action
8:55pm And that is all from our presentation for you today. We hope you enjoyed the wonderful cricket we were treated to today, and hope you'll join us as we call the second game for you in a few days. Good night!
Virat Kohli: Yeah it was quite special. First match of the series is important. We wanted to take the momentum of the Test win into this and when we restricted South Africa to 270 on this sort of a pitch, we were happy. Very happy for Jinx. Jinx is a top class player. We understood fast bowling was going to be a big factor in this tour. He was superb, he took on the fast bowlers. [On India's bowling] Bhuvi and Bumrah, we bank on them. Picking up one or two wickets in the top ten is what we wanted to do. And then the two wristpsinners - outstanding bowling by both of them. They are working wonderfully for the team. They're playing in South Africa for the first time. They were very brave, they were throwing it up and that's why they got wickets. As a captain, its outstanding when you have two guys who know what they want to do.
Virat Kohli is the Man of the Match.
Faf du Plessis: Just a few battle scars. Just went upstairs to get the fingers checked. One-day cricket the intensity is a lot higher. Happy to ge through the game. Feeling strong. Definitely didn't get enough, we didn't bat well enough. I reckon we were about 50-60-70 runs short. Chris had a good partnership but as a batting unit we were disappointed. When you're chasing five runs an over here, it's pretty easy. Tried everything with field placesments and tactics but Virat and Rahane played very well.
Mileend: "Kohli-Rahane partnership gives memories of Sachin-Dravid's many match winning and building partnerships, just think if Rahane gets a longer run in ODI he can be next Dravid, hes adaptive enough to be like him"
Deepak Karkala: "How accurate was Kuldeep in his assessment of the score during the Innings break? "269 is a good score. Hopefully we can chase in 45-46 overs". This is what he said!!"
8:35pm A canter for India in the end. A six-wicket win with nearly five overs to spare. South Africa's 17-game winning streak at home has ended. It wasn't a "complete performance" from India by any means, but enough players contributed at the right moments to seize this game from South Africa, who had the momentum at the start of the match. The miserly wristspin duo took five wickets between them, conceding under four per over when the medium-pacers endured a bad day. Then, Kohli and Rahane in partnership - they put on 189 - were masterful as they dismantled South Africa with strategic running before bringing out the big shots. Nicely finished in the end for India, and they now have a 1-0 lead.
it's begun to drizzle
full toss on off stump. Defended down the pitch
good length outside off, tapped into the covers off the front foot
close shout for lbw is turned down. It's a full ball and he's locked himself as he looks to flick. It strikes him on the pads and it would have gone down
full outside off stump, driven on the up to mid-off
good length and in at leg stump. Misses on the flick again. Deflected in fine leg's region and they pinch a second
And then there's an eruption because MS Dhoni has walked out
yet another slower bouncer. Yet another hoick under it. This time Rabada comes under it and snaps it up. Unlike Kohli to keep going after that, but Phehlukwayo's persistence has been rewarded. Nevertheless, it's a standing ovation for Kohli for yet another stunning second-innings knock
full toss on leg stump. Looks to flick, misses. Appeal is turned down and it's being reviewed. Looks like that was going down but he was struck on the full so this will be interesting...replays confirm it was going down.
short ball down leg side, swivels and pulls to fine leg's left
good length on off stump, defended down the pitch
looks like Shamsi has kicked the ball into play at fine leg. Kohli nails the hook and it's racing away to Shamsi's left at fine leg. Puts in a lunge and ends up volleying it to deep square leg. Wenger, sign him up!
the most radical opening shot you'll see. Walks across and shows middle and leg. Picks the full ball and flicks to fine leg
good length outside off, punches it to mid-off's right on the up but can't beat Amla's slide
back of a length outside off, punched to extra cover on the up
another bouncer. This one zooms past him. He's late on the hook
dropped. Zondo puts down a simple one after running in from deep square leg. Another slow bouncer from Andile. Kohli can't get above it once more. In fact, he gets too far under it. Hooks aerially and an easy one goes down in the deep
slower bouncer outside off. Looks to slap it through midwicket. It takes an eternity to come on. He under-edges into the off side
lobs one for long-on. Length ball follows him down leg side. He goes for a pick-up over midwicket, but that gets too big on him. He ends up lifting a simple one for Tahir. A stunning knock from Rahane, if he ever needed one.
Sravan: "Gloooooriious cover drive! Does it qualify as a drive as it was hit uppish, but it makes a cover drive along the ground look modest. Whaddaplayaa!"
slower ball, back of a length on off stump. Flicked to midwicket on the up
good length on leg stump, pushed into the leg side from the crease
