Live Report - India vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, 2nd day

By Sidharth Monga

India need nine more

R Ashwin gets just the one over, and with the last ball he draws a bat-pad from Kusal Mendis, which just manages to avoid short leg. Sri Lanka end the day at 28 for 1. Yet another day dominated by India. We leave you with this teaser from the main report. See you tomorrow.
It is so one-sided they started discussing a third-innings final declaration in the fifth session of the match. Jasprit Bumrah completed his first five-for at home, Rishabh Pant casually knocked off the fastest Test fifty by an Indian, and Shreyas Iyer scored his second half-century of the match to bury Sri Lanka buried under a mountain of deficit. Five-and-a-half hours of Sri Lanka’s bowling – improved but still lacking control to exploit helpful conditions – were bookended by incisive half-hour spells of Indian bowling, which brought them five wickets. The first half hour took the four remaining first-innings Sri Lanka; the last, under lights with a new pink ball, accounted for Lahiru Thirimanne.

What do you do, Jack?

Jasprit Bumrah gets out with an awayswinger in the first innings, sets you up with that again, and then swings one in at high pace. You try to track it, but it kisses the pad before hitting your bat. Lahiru Thirimaanne gone. Sri Lanka 0 for 1 in 0.3 overs.

Thirty-five minutes of torture

India lose their ninth wicket at 303, and they have declared at 8.45pm. That leaves Sri Lanka 35 minutes to survive this evening against the new pink ball in the hands of Japsrit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. Their target is 447 at about 1.6 an over.

Iyer falls but India bat on

Lasith Embuldebniya gets Iyer with one that doesn't turn but straightens just that little bit. Misses the inside edge, and also straightens enough to hit leg. Out lbw. India, though, continue to bat. Here is Mohammed Shami.

Can Iyer get a hundred?

R Ashwin plays Praveen Jayawickrama for the turn, but the ball goes straight on, and also bounces extra to take a thick edge, which Niroshan Dickwella takes well. That leaves India three wickets standing with Iyer on 67. About an hour's play to go tonight. I suspect we might see a declaration if Iyer gets out anytime soon, but otherwise they might let him go for his century. India lead by 421.

Lead goes past 400

India have lost Jadeja but Iyer keeps going strong. The lead is 401 with 21 overs left in the day. Iyer 62 off 75.

Twin fifties for Iyer

Once again, Shreyas Iyer has put the bowlers under immense pressure by pouncing on every small error. And errors beget errors. He reaches his fifty off the 68th ball. He has plenty of time to make amends for the miss in the first innings.

India pile it on

Half an hour into the final session, India have added another 28 runs to their lead, taking it to 370, without losing a wicket. Dimuth Karunaratne has the unenviable task of setting fields for bowling that lacks control.

Dinner, day two

India amass 138 for 4 in that middle session to bat Sri Lanka out of the Test. Thanks largely to that 28-ball fifty by Pant. They lead by 342 now.

Fifty and out

Looking to hit his third six of the day, Rishabh pant skies Praveen Jayawickrama to be out for an entertaining 50 off 30 balls. India 184 for 5, leading by 317. How many more before they declare? Not that they need to. There is a lot of time left in this Test. Pant's strike rate of 156.14 in this match is the fourth-highest for any batter in a Test match where he faced 50-plus balls.

Pant gets India's fastest fifty

28 Number of balls Pant has taken to get to 50, beating Kapil Dev's India record by two balls. Fastest hundred for India? Kapil and Azhar, both 74 balls.

Shooter square

Wry grin from Virat Kohli as he he gets his second grubber of the match. He is lbw for 13. Jayawickrama has put in an excellent spell despite injury: 8.4-2-29-2. India 139 for 4, lead by 282.

Sixy Pant

44 Number of sixes Rishabh Pant has hit in Test cricket, taking him to No. 8 among Indians. Three of the top eight are in this XI: Rohit, Jadeja and Pant. With 33 sixes, Mayank Agarwal is No. 12.

Match on steroids

Because Rishabh Pant has come out and scored 20 off 7. Two sixes and a four in seven balls. India 139 for 3, leading by 282 now. Will we see a declaration tonight?

Test keeps moving along

Hanuma Vihari has survived two lbws that Sri Lanka have also failed to review, but now he is bowled on the sweep by Jayawickrama. Yet another innings in which he has shown he has a solid plan on a square turner. Play right forward or right back, and keep looking to score at every half opportunity. Follows up his first-innings 31 with 35. India 116 for 3. That's a lead of 259. Rishabh Pant ahead of Shreyas Iyer again.

Roar from Chinnaswamy

At the fall of Rohit Sharma's wicket, that is. And that's because Virat Kohli is coming in. Rohit looks to hit a six but gets a touch too close to an offbreak from Dhananjaya de Silva. Doesn't get the elevation he needs, and holes out to long-on. Gone for 46 in an innings that he played three reverse-sweeps, which means 30% of his career reverse-sweeps in international cricket have come in this innings. India 98 for 3, a lead of 241.

48 Unbeaten runs added by Rohit Sharma and Hanuma Vihari, the highest partnership of the match.

Jayawickrama is back

Praveen Jayawickrama, who walked off with what looked like a sprained ankle, is back on the field, but he is not looking all that comfortable. He is hobbling back to his mark. The track, though, is helping hi, and he has created two errors in three balls. India 72 for 1.
PS: It is a knee injury from the blow he took while fielding. So it is an external injury, which is why he is allowed to bowl as soon as he is back.

Tea on day two

India go to tea at 61 for 1 having taken the four remaining wickets in no time at all. India lead by 204 with Sri Lanka struggling to string together together good balls. And Praveen Jayawickrama has walked off with an injury. Embuldeniya is still bowling the occasional unplayable ball but he is going at 4 an over. Play resumes in 20 minutes.

Embuldeniya gets Agarwal

Mayank Agarwal will be unhappy with this. He got dragged into a forward-defensive outside off, and to a length he is not close enough despite a big stretch. The ball turns and takes a thick edge to gully. India 42 for 1, a lead of 185.

Rohit Sharma reverse-sweeps

In the ninth over of this innings, Rohit Sharma plays an uncharacteristic shot, a reverse-sweep. He connects it, and gets four for it. It is a rare event: only the eighth time that Rohit has played that shot in all international cricket. He follows up with another attempt the next ball, but doesn't connect well. India 35 for 0, a lead of 178.

Bad gets worse for Sri Lanka

As if they were not in a bad way, Praveen Jayawickrama has been helped off the field. Andrew Fernando suspects an ankle sprain, a "potentially match-ending injury". India 31 for 0 in eight overs, which makes them 174 ahead.

India lead by 143

It has taken 35 balls and 23 runs for India to take the remaining four wickets. Ashwin takes the last with another carrom ball. Now it is up to the Sri Lanka bowlers to put up a better show than they did yesterday. Can they bowl India out cheaply or will we have a declaration?

Bumrah's first home five-for

Just too good for Sri Lanka. In the fifth over of the day, Jasprit Bumrah bowls the bouncer that follows Niroshan Dickwella, takes the glove and gives Rishabh Pant an easy catch. That's 120 wickets and an eighth five-for for Bumrah in just his 29th Test. Only 11 of these wickets have come at home. This is just his fourth Test in India.

Carrom ball

Lakmal shows he is willing to tough it out unlike in Mohali, even rubs it in by lobbing mid-on when he comes in, but then R Ashwin produces the carrom ball, which Lakmal fails to pick. Lands middle and leg, takes off. Sri Lanka 100 for 8.

It takes 14 balls

India up and running in the third over of the day. Lasith Embuldeniya, who showed in Mohali he didn't fancy the short ball, has been peppered since last night. He eventually has a hook, but manages a lob to Rishabh Pant off Japsrit Bumrah.
In one other news, Suranga Lakmal has scored his first run of the series. Sri Lanka 96 for 7.

The challenge for Sri Lanka

24
The combined average of this five-man Indian bowling attack over 1046 wickets between them. How good is that? Just for comparison, Australia's four-man (not five, which makes India even more relentless) attack of Hazlewood, Cummins, Starc and Lyon averages 28.05 over 1091 wickets. Facing Bumrah, Shami, Ashwin, Jadeja, Axar on an Indian track has to be the toughest ask of a team in a long long time. Unfair. Illegal even.
Welcome to day two of this day-night Test. What can Sri Lanka make of this task?
