pitched up and driven through the covers, Phoenix win by four wickets! Howell not only sees off the hat-trick ball but hits the winning runs! Livingstone gives the talk, talk, talk gesture as Phoenix claim their first win of the season
Invincibles vs Phoenix, 10th Match at Birmingham, Men's Hundred, Aug 12 2025 - Ball by Ball Commentary
Phoenix won by 4 wickets (with 2 balls remaining)
9.25pm: What an effort from Birmingham Phoenix, who needed 61 from the last 25 but in the end strolled over the line (despite a wobble) to complete the third-highest successful chase in the men's Hundred! Invincibles must have thought they were almost home and hosed, only for their trump card, Rashid Khan, to concede 26 from a set and bring the home side right back into it
Liam Livingstone, the man who took down Rashid, is understandably the Match Hero: "Very special, we needed it. They're a great team, won it two years in a row. Nice to get one over them and hopefully give us some momentum. [Approach] Try and get used to the pitch and use the bounce, try and take down their spinners. I back myself if bowlers miss I can hit and thankfully it came off. [Rashid set] I've got a pretty good record just by stepping across and slogging him. It's worked in the past. I can't pick him so just try to do it that way. We let ourselves down a bit in the field. Something we don't want to do. Great win, got ourselves back into the tournament."
Woof. The best game of the men's comp. Livingstone gave a scintillating reminder of what he can do, and Phoenix's season is up and running. We'll be back for more with tomorrow's double double-header from Southampton and Cardiff - for now, from myself and Matt, thanks for your comments and good night. Bye!
Benny Howell is in. Mahmood on a hat-trick
yorks him first ball! Beautifully bowled, Kimber's feet are stuck in treacle as the ball thunders into the base of off stump! Mahmood takes out two in two and Phoenix fans might just be getting nervous here
In comes Louis Kimber
low full toss, pinned! Up goes the finger, but Mousley reviews. Did he hit it? No, says UltraEdge. Struck on the back leg in line with off stump... Umpire's call on the base of off, so Mousley will walk off! Invincibles fighting to the end
Some more chat between the players. Invincibles staring at first defeat of the season. Phoenix need three from the final set... Mahmood to bowl
wide blockhole, mistimed down to long-off
fires in the yorker, dug out through mid-on and they come haring back for two
slower ball goes the journey! Phoenix are almost home! Sits up again, wide line but hauled over deep miwicket. And Livingstone gives Curran a few words of commentary, to boot
Now 12 needed from 8 balls
WALLOPED! Short of a length, sits up nicely and he wheels away a baseball swing, 88m out towards the jubilant Hollies Stand!
blapped through cover! Length ball in the channel and Livingstone ab-so-lute-ly creams a drive past the sweeper. No need to run for those
Final end, Tom Curran to bowl. Phoenix need 22 from 10 with Livingstone on strike
fired full outside off, 84mph and he swings with connecting. Eight off the set after going for six first ball. Still in the balance
short ball, Mousley swings at a pull and can't connect. Must have been close to a wide on height
full and swung away to deep midwicket, fifty up for Livingstone! Been a belligerent knock from the Phoenix captain, jsut what his side needed. The crowd show their appreciation. But he still has work to do
chopped into the ground, Mousley has to regain his ground as Billings has a shy... then isn't looking when the ball rebounds into an vacant part of the ground. Eventually, after starting to come and then saying '"No!", Livingstone does get down the striker's end
full toss, tonked h-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-g-h over long-on! Poor ball and Mousley gives it the treatment, nailing a 90-metre six over the heads of the men in the deep
SCurran is going to bowl 10 in a row
shortish, Livingstone moves a long way across and slaps to deep backward point
goes for the wide blockhole, but just misses the guide lines
angled across the right-hander, 74mph. Livingstone swings hard and misses
mistimed down the ground for one
In fact, Rashid's spell was the most-expensive in the men's Hundred over all
pitched up, 85mph outside off, punched through point
goes full and hits the pads with Mousley swinging to leg. Was it heading down? No review in the end. Might have been too much on the angle... and the replay reveals an inside edge, too
SCurran is back. Phoenix need 35 from 20
That set extended Livingstone's exceptional head-to-head record against Rashid, notes Matt R
Rashid's most-expensive figures in the Hundred... might rank high in all T20 (confirmed as his worst, despite only bowling 20 balls). Invincibles call for the strategic timeout to try to regroup
flat-batted through the covers, Livingstone has the crowd on their feet again! Finishes off a brutal set for Rashid!
