St. John's - There were many occasions when the crowd at the Antigua
Recreation Ground showed their disapproval when Jimmy Adams and
Courtney Walsh were in their quest of a tense West Indies victory here
yesterday. The reason: Why was Adams turning down singles that were
there for the taking?
The jeers however later turned to cheers after the Windies victory as
fans feted until after 10 p.m.
The West Indies captain, however, offered a detailed explanation after
the one-wicket victory was completed.
'We had one particular plan to give him (Courtney) no more than two
balls out of every over,'Adams told reporters at a packed Press
conference.
'There were a couple of overs where it didn't work, but Courtney,
being the fighter that he is, really stuck to it and did a magnificent
job.'
Adams, who was joined by Walsh when the West Indies were 197 for nine
and still 19 short of their target of 216, said it was not a time to
be indecisive over their approach.
'We had a plan and the plan was either going to work or it wasn't
going to work,' he said.
'We weren't going to be making three, four and five plans.'
The victory, Adams admitted, was a hard-fought one after Pakistan
staged a tremendous fightback in the morning session by wiping out the
West Indies' middle and lower order after the hosts had resumed on 144
for four.
'It was a bit too close for comfort, but all's well that ends well,'
the West Indies captain said after the victory gave them a 1-0 series
win.
'We've very happy and extremely grateful for the fact that we have a
positive result for the effort we've put in this series.'
He lauded the contribution of the entire team after a commendable
season in which they also made a clean sweep of the preceding twomatch Test series against Zimbabwe.
'I think it is the entire set-up, from the manager and the coaches
through to myself, through to the senior players, Ambrose, Walsh,
Campbell,'Adams said.
'Everybdy has brought in a work ethic and I'm glad that it is paying
off. It's one thing to say something, but when young men see it
working for then, it's actually motivation to keep doing it and being
as consistent as possible.'
