Super Eight Cricket: Australia `A` champions
KUALA LUMPUR, Sunday, - Cricket officials are considering making
the Super Eights tournament, won by Australia A in Malaysia on
Sunday, an annual event according to former Australian test captain Greg Chappell.
The inaugural tournament was launched by the Australian Cricket
Board (ACB), with rules designed to broaden the appeal of the
game in Asia.
Each match lasted about two hours, with sides facing a maximum of
14 overs. The emphasis on attacking play, with shots clearing
the boundary worth eight runs instead of the usual six, produced
high scoring throughout the weekend event.
Chappell said it had generated enough interest for it to remain
on the international calendar.
"It will have a very important role to play in the development of
cricket into the future,`` he said.
Australia A beat a Malaysian XI, led by former Australia captain
Allan Border, in their semifinal.
New Zealand, who had earlier eliminated the senior Australia
team, went down to South Africa by six wickets in their semifinal.
In the final, Australia A hit 211, with Adam Gilchrist and Darren
Lehmann scoring half centuries -- Gilchrist`s from only 14 balls.
