At Melbourne, January 19. Sri Lanka won by four wickets. Having chosen to field first, Sri Lanka excelled themselves after a discouraging start wherein Wessels and Wood raced away to score 68 in Australia's first seventeen overs. Ratnayake dismissed them both and, together with the veteran leg-spinner, D. S. de Silva, bowled well enough to restrict Australia to a reachable total. For Sri Lanka Dias and Mendis put on an invaluable 64 in eleven overs and P. A. De Silva played a responsible innings, crowned when he hit the winning runs with a 6 off the second ball of the final over.
