Bacher Wants Sri Lanka For Triangular Tournament
The Sunday Independent of 24th March reports that UCB managing
director Ali Bacher wants to invite Sri Lanka to play in a triangular ODI series with SA and Pakistan and also a one-off test
in the 1997/8 season.
Pakistan are scheduled to tour South Africa from mid-January to
April of 1998, and Bacher will propose to the UCB executive that
Sri Lanka be invited as well.
"As the world one-day champions. the Sri Lankans are very keen
now to show off their skills in five-day Test cricket," said
Bacher. "that`s why I will be proposing to my board that we invite them to play in a triangular series in 1997/8 and also a
Test match against our team."
Zimbawe are scheduled to tour Sri Lanka in January and February
of 1998, but Bacher is hopeful that Sri Lanka will be able to
tour South Africa thereafter.
With India and Australia touring next season (1996/7), SA touring
Pakistan and Australia in 1997/8 and then hosting Pakistan, the
World Cup in 1999 and a proposed 6 month rest break in the 1997
off-season it seems unlikely that SA can tour Sri Lanka before
2000.
