Border to retire at end of season
Former Australian skipper Allan Border has announced his decision
to retire from cricket at the end of the current season.
"I`ve really enjoyed myself, but now my time is up," said Border,
who started his first class career with New South Wales.
Border had earlier retired from Test cricket in 1994, but as late
as last year was part of the first Queensland team to win the
Sheffield Shield.
Border, now 40, played a record 156 Tests, dating back to his debut in December 1978. In that time, he scored 11,174 runs at an
average of 50.56, and also took 156 catches. He captained Australia in 93 Tests, scoring 27 centuries and 63 half centuries.
His reign was highlighted by two successful Ashes campaigns, in
1989 and 1993, and Australia`s win in the World Cup in 1987.
