Jagmohan Dalmiya will be facing some opposition in the Cricket
Association of Bengal after a long time. The elections to the post of
CAB office bearers will be conducted on July 28. And for once, the
opposition has managed to put up a front capable of putting up some
fight.
The office bearers to be elected are the president, the joint
secretaries, the vice presidents (four in number) and the
treasurer. In case the nominations filed for any particular post
exceeds the desired number, an election takes place. For the past few
years, the panel elected by Dalmiya has always been elected
unanimously. This time however, the scene is quite different.
Even though Debdas Bannerjee and Nirmal Mukherjee have filed
nominations for the post of joint secretaries, from Dalmiya's panel,
an official of the Aryan Club Samar Paul, has decided to contest for
the same. This means that there will be three contenders for the two
posts of joint secretaries. The total number of representatives in the
general body is 121. This includes representation from the first and
second division clubs, Districts and Universities. The two who will
poll the maximum number of votes will be selected for the post of
joint secretaries. This time Paul, who is in the opposition is going
all out to secure at least 50 votes that will guarantee his chance of
getting one of the two posts.
Similarly, this time, there are five contenders for the post of four
vice-presidents and two contenders for the post of treasurer. What is
significant is that this time, the person who is contesting against
the candidate of the Dalmiya panel, has himself once been a
pro-Dalmiya man. The treasurer has always been an uncontested post as
far Dalmiya has been concerned. This time, however, Samar Kar has
decided to contest against Amitava Bannerjee, who is from the Dalmiya
camp.
Inspite of such a scenario, it is almost certain that Dalmiya will
have the last laugh as the opposition camp does not have the financial
ability to win the elections. However, what is significant is that
some kind of opposition has formed against the man who has
revolutionized the cricketing world.
