Derbyshire have officialy confirmed the expected news that Dominic Cork is to leave. Cork has been at odds with the club for the past two seasons and when Dave Houghton, the former Zimbabwean batsman, was appointed as the new director of cricket and refused to confirm that Cork would continue as captain, it signalled the end. He is now free to talk to other counties, with Hampshire, Lancashire and Nottinghamshire all reportedly interested in signing him.
Even though Cork and the Derbyshire board have not had the best of relationships over the past couple of years, Trevor Bowring, the chairman, at least managed to say a few kind words on Cork's departure. "Everyone at the County Ground sends Dominic their thanks, and hopes that he thoroughly enjoys the remainder of his career," said Bowring. "While in many ways this is a very sad day for the club, we believe that this marks the beginning of a new era."
In a club statement, Cork said he had thoroughly enjoyed his 16 years with the county, and his six seasons as captain. "I will always hold fond memories of the time I have spent there. The time is right for me for a new challenge, but I wish everyone at Derby all the very best for the future."
Cork made his debut in 1990 and led the club from 1998 to this season. Derbyshire announced earlier this week that Michael Di Venuto will replace Cork as captain for next season, with Luke Sutton as vice-captain.
