His batting in his first Test series against New Zealand last season
included scores of 75, 88 and 31 not out. But he came a cropper on the
tour of Australia where his technical limitations were exposed. But
Devang Gandhi still feels he can come back into the Indian team.
When one caught up with him at the Eden Gardens on Friday, Gandhi was
sweating it out in the middle. Currently captain of Bengal in the
absence of Sourav Ganguly, his aim is to score as many runs as
possible. When asked what he thought of his chances of making a
comeback to the national side, Gandhi replied, "I just have to score
heavily. That is what counts. Look at VVS Laxman. I am an admirer of
the way he just goes on scoring runs. He is a sort of an inspiration
to me. If I can score in a similar manner, the selectors are bound to
take notice of me."
The dashing right hander has no hard feelings for being dropped from
the side. Gandhi had a very successful home series against New Zealand
before he failed in the only Test against Australia. "Let's say, I did
not grab the opportunities that came my way. So I am not blaming
anybody. I just want to score as many runs as possible in the domestic
scene." He does not feel that captaincy will pressurize him and affect
his batting. ``Captaincy is all about responsibility,'' he said. I am
confident it will just egg me on.''
