At Kuala Lumpur, September 12, 2006 (day/night). Australia won by 78 runs. Australia 5 pts. Toss: Australia.
West Indies went from near-certain winners to humiliated losers, as nine wickets tumbled for 29 from 172 for one. There seemed little chance of such a slide when Chanderpaul and Gayle were together, as they cashed in on some rusty new-ball bowling and the short boundaries at the Kinrara Academy Oval, the 161st ground to host an official one-day international. They thrashed 17 fours and six sixes between them, making Australia's 279 look rather inadequate - but then Johnson found Chanderpaul's edge with a speedy lifter, and pinned Lara plumb in front in his next over. Watson picked up four wickets as the collapse gathered pace, while Cosgrove followed up some punchy batting with a maiden international wicket: McGrath, in his first match back since taking compassionate leave to be with his sick wife Jane, disposed of Bravo. Ponting was docked his entire match fee for making a disparaging comment to umpire Asad Rauf after he called Watson for a wide in the third-last over of the match.
Man of the Match: S. R. Watson.
