The Eagles had little difficulty in chasing down a revised target of 172 after the Lions had totalled 194 in their 45 overs at Sedgars Park in Potchefstroom. Their win took them to the top of the Standard Bank Cup table.
An opening partnership of 85, interrupted by a 30-minute downpour, between Morne van Wyk and Jonathan Beukus laid the foundation for the Eagles' win, although Charl Langeveldt nearly threw a spanner in the works when he clean-bowled Beukus for 36 and then had Benjamin Hector caught behind for 5. After 23 overs a second rain-break resulted in six overs being lost, and the target was revised to 172.
Derek Crookes had van Wyk caught at the wicket for 64, while Garnett Kruger took the wicket of Davey Jacobs for 23. But in the end Loots Bosman (25) and Johannes van der Wath (9) saw the Eagles home.
The Lions innings never got off the ground after the Eagles sent them in. The three-pronged pace attack of Johannes van der Wath, Roger Telemachus and Deon Kruis proved to be just too good on the day - each of them picked up three wickets. The only batsman to shine was HD Ackerman, who batted very well for his 75 off 88 balls.
Meanwhile, at Buffalo Park in East London the match between the Warriors and the Dolphins was called off without a ball being bowled.
